Durr scores in overtime to defeat Williamsburg

Solon girls move to 3-2 with two wins in a row

WILLIAMSBURG– Solon’s girls are back on the winning track.
The Lady Spartan varsity soccer team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 3-2 overtime victory over Williamsburg Monday, April 18.
According to Solon head coach John Tucker, the Lady Spartans controlled the play most of the game, with 25 shots on goal to less than 10 for Williamsburg.
“Williamsburg put up a good fight, but Josie (Durr) was able to find the back of the net in just the first few minutes of overtime on a pass from Megan Tucker to win the game,” Tucker reported.

Three in a row for Solon boys

Spartans move to 8-2 with home wins over Raiders, Bobcats

SOLON– Since dropping two matches at a tournament in Hudson April 9, Solon’s boys varsity soccer team has rattled off three home wins in a row and upped its record to 8-2 on the season.
The Spartans held off Anamosa, 3-2, to hand the Raiders their first loss of the season Friday, April 15, and beat Western Dubuque, 2-1, on Monday, April 18. The loss was Western Dubuque’s fourth consecutive.
Anamosa came into Friday evening’s match having outscored opponents by a combined 27-1, but the Spartans jumped out to an early lead and the defense fended off a late flurry to preserve the win.

NL Food Pantry volunteer spotlight

Paul has volunteered with the panty for a couple of years. He belongs to the North Liberty Methodist Church where helped with numerous activities.
Paul enjoys volunteering at the pantry because it gives him something to do and he enjoys all the people. Paul puts in a lot of hours at the pantry, working on a shift when the pantry is open to the public to helping with the large food pick-ups, food processing shifts, and helping the inventory manager unload all the items in the warehouse.
Paul wants the community to know the pantry is open for everyone and it is here to help everybody.

Spartans Third in Jesse Day Relays

DAVENPORT– On April 14, the Spartans grabbed third, for the second time in a week, at the Jesse Day Co-ed Relays, at the Brady Street Stadium, against 11 other teams.
The Solon boys’ track team put together a strong show in a talented field with champion efforts from Streeter McIlravy and Nate Christensen in the high jump and the 200-meter dash, respectively. Christensen added to his podium streak with a second in the 100-meter dash and a third as part of the 4x100-meter relay with Bo Black, Matt Roeder and Brandan Childs.

Red Cedar Chamber Music brings “Music and Magic Lanterns” to CSPS in Cedar Rapids and Sts. Peter & Paul

CEDAR RAPIDS– Red Cedar Chamber Music brings its 20th season to a close with its MainStage performance of “Music and Magic Lanterns” at CSPS Hall, 1103 3rd St. SE, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 30.
An outreach performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, April 29, at Sts. Peter and Paul Community Center, 1165 Taft Ave. NE, Solon.

Lakeview PTO hosts race at Solon Rec. and Nature Area

SOLON– The Lakeview Elementary PTO will host its Fifth Annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 23, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event serving as the Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year. Interested individuals should sign up to participate in the event with a “family team.”

IOWA CITY– Law enforcement agencies in Johnson County are embracing the concept of Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), an educational program for law enforcement officers which expands their ability to deal safely and effectively with people experiencing a mental health crisis.

Spartan upgrade for water tower?

Harrington seeks to raise $10K to add school emblem

SOLON– It’s all about that Spartan pride.
It would cost just shy of $10,000 to add a Spartan logo and a black stripe to the Solon water tower.
And, that’s what rural Solon resident Alan Harrington has proposed to the Solon City Council.
Their response?
Sounds great if you have the cash.
“Do they have the money to pay for it up front?” asked council member Mark Krall.
Back in March, council members approved spending an extra $9,800 to enhance the lettering on the city’s water tower when it’s painted later this year.

Macbride Raptor Project free Family Day Saturday, May 7

SOLON– Macbride Raptor Project (MRP) monthly Family Day will be held on Saturday, March 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Family Day is free and open to the public. The Raptor’s Nest (MRP educational center) will be open with staff and volunteers available to answer questions about the project and the raptors. Snacks and crafts will also be provided for guests.
