IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High Trojan wrestlers suffered a pair of dual meet losses Friday, Feb. 2, at home to the Prairie Hawks of Cedar Rapids Prairie and the Panthers of Scott West, a combination of Belle Plain and Jordan, Minn., high school wrestlers.

DAVENPORT– Four wrestlers from Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School advanced to a Class 2A district meet, putting them one step closer to the state individual tournament in Des Moines.
Sam Stevens (113 pounds), Andrew Rohret (145) and Tanner Cochran (220) were crowned champions Saturday, Feb. 3, at the 2A Sectional 6 tournament at Davenport Assumption and advanced, as did Jake Neuzil, the runner-up at 126 pounds.

DAVENPORT– Liberty High School’s first varsity wrestling team is sending three athletes to compete in a Class 2A district meet following their runner-up finishes in a 2A Sectional Saturday, Feb. 3, at Assumption High School in Davenport. Jared Alger (132 pounds), Ashton Barker (145) and Gavin Luze (170) made the cut and will battle for a shot at the state individual meet on Saturday, Feb. 10, in a class 2A District No. 3 meet in Fairfield starting at noon.

Jeff Gordon named Liberty varsity football coach

NORTH LIBERTY– Jeff Gordon, Liberty High School’s first freshman football coach and first sophomore coach, was named the school’s first head varsity football coach.
Liberty High Athletic Director Mike Morrison announced Gordon’s hiring Sunday, Jan. 28.

Creek Boys dunk the Demons

TIFFIN– The Creek Boys of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) rebounded from a 81-68 loss to Independence with an 81-56 home win over the Washington (Iowa) Demons as part of a varsity doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 3.
The Clippers took a 30-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and enjoyed a 56-22 halftime advantage. CCA’s domination of the Demons continued unabated in the second half as they led 73-34 going into the final period.

Moore sets scoring record in CCA win

Moore sets 41-point record in 73-70 win for CCA

WILLIAMSBURG– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) senior Darius Moore carried the Clippers to a 73-70 road win over rival Williamsburg on Tuesday, Jan. 30, and set a new school record in the process.
It was the Creek Boys’ second win of the season over the Raiders. They knocked off the ‘Burg, 80-66, at home, in December.

Senior upends West, 68-59

Iowa City West High’s varsity boys basketball program set a new state record recently with 81 consecutive home wins. The Rams of Dubuque Senior ended that streak in an afternoon matinee Saturday, Feb. 3, by handing the Trojans their third loss of the season.

Lightning sweeps home doubleheader

Knock off W. Delaware and Wapsie Valley

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity basketball squads swept a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 3, at home with a pair of late-season wins.
The Lightning girls snapped a seven-game losing streak as they defeated the Hawks of West Delaware, 55-48, while the boys held on for a dramatic 48-46 win over Wapsie Valley.
The Liberty girls started out against West Delaware with a 5-0 lead thanks to a 3-point basket by Cora Saunders and a field goal from Megan Davis. Liberty took the first period 14-11, but trailed 23-20 at halftime.

Bill Riley Talent Search comes to Tiffin

Qualifying show on Saturday, March 3

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Fine Arts and Music Enhancers (FAME) will be hosting a Bill Riley State Fair Talent Search qualifying show on Saturday, March 3, at the CCA High School Performing Arts Center. There will be 15 available slots in each of the two divisions. Performers will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until all spots have been filled.

New design for Johncy’s

NORTH LIBERTY– Renovations are underway at the North Liberty neighborhood Johncy’s Liquor Store. Johncy Menezes and his wife Michelle Menezes purchased the store and decided to give it a new look. The store will stay open during normal hours. Most of the work will be completed during off hours.
Johncy’s will expand on the hard-to-find liquors and on micro brews and wines. They are in the process of upgrading the beer coolers, removing all the coolers and adding a huge walk-in cooler, just for microbrews and Iowa beers, and add a separate beer cave for all other craft beers.
