NORTH LIBERTY– Bigger musical talent, new activities and a strong attendance at an evolving park characterized North Liberty’s 12th annual Blues & BBQ Saturday, July 14. A muggy start tapered off into the evening as the festival played host to an estimated 17,000 people.
“We’re really proud of that number,” said Nick Bergus, Communications Director for the City of North Liberty and member of the 2018 Blues & BBQ committee.
The Pig & Pint Prelude sold out for its second year with 260 guests, up from the inaugural event. The event is expected to return next year as it continues to grow.

SOLON– Friday the 13th turned out to be the Clippers’ lucky day as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball team pounded the ball early and often for a 14-3 win over the Panthers of Mount Pleasant in a Class 3A Substate 5 District 9 first round game in Solon.
The Creek Boys put two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as Cam “Lender” Armstrong hit a sacrifice fly to score Sam Young, and Cody Ogden drilled a solo homerun.

Journey Counseling Services marks a decade in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s been a slow burn, but over the course of 10 years, Journey Counseling Services (JCS) has made a solid niche for itself in North Liberty.
Located at 6 Hawkeye Dr. Ste. 105, the ministry offers Christian-based counseling with over 30 years of combined experience.
“As we’ve been doing this longer, I’ve found it to be kind of a unique spot that we’re in, because not a lot of other people do it,” said owner and counselor Holly Smigel.

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin commissioned a Comprehensive Plan, to serve as a guide toward managing future development and population growth over a 20-year span, in 2014. The 2014 edition took approximately two years to compile, craft and approve. In the short span since the plan was adopted, Tiffin’s growth continued seemingly unimpeded, and projections for future growth needed to be revised.

OXFORD– It was a sunny and humid holiday in Oxford, with temperatures lingering around 90 degrees on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 4. But that didn’t stop its residents and members of surrounding communities from filling up the sidewalk along downtown Augusta Avenue for the town’s 2018 Independence Day parade.

Centennial Park’s first playground ready for Blues & BBQ festival

NORTH LIBERTY– Playground design has come a long way. Forty years ago, kids played on jungle gyms and monkey bars installed on asphalt pads or surrounded by various sizes of gravel. Later, bits and pieces of shredded tires were layered around the appliances, cushioning young bodies from the inevitable falls. More recently, other materials such as wood chips were placed to provide a softer surface.
