Finding the formula for fun

Middle School students, staff create Solon’s largest human square root sign

SOLON– The entire Solon Middle School student body and staff lined up on the old high school football field on Monday, April 4, to celebrate Square Root Day, a play on the month and date to get the year (4x4=16).
Nearly 500 total people, including about 460 students in fifth-eighth grades, followed the instructions given by eighth grade math teacher Nancy Trow via megaphone. Trow was the innovator of the idea.
A photo was taken for the yearbook.

Everyone’s an inventor

STEAM Room Fab Lab offers possibility to create anything

IOWA CITY– If you could make anything, what would you choose? A bicycle? A new chandelier? A life-saving medical device? What would you do if there were no limits?
Kirk Cheyney invites you to find out. Cheyney is the founder of the STEAM Room Fab Lab, a digital fabrication laboratory full of machines, equipment, and possibilities.

A passion for wrestling

Hayden Taylor is making a name for himself on the mats

SOLON– Hayden Taylor lives for wrestling.
For six years, it’s been his passion and he’s got five state titles and numerous other awards to show for it.
Hayden, a sixth-grader in Solon, was introduced to the world of wrestling at the age of 6 when his dad, Jason Taylor, asked if he was interested in wrestling and said he could hang out at Spartan (varsity) practice as long as he didn’t get in trouble grade-wise with his school work.

Council says yes to outdoor service

City to develop policy for eateries wanting to expand onto Main Street

SOLON– Evening parking is already a problem on Main Street.
Losing a couple of spots on a seasonal basis probably won’t make a difference, argued Solon City Council member Steve Duncan.
With that in mind, council members directed City Administrator Cami Rasmussen and City Attorney Jim Martinek, at an April 6 council meeting, to develop a set of guidelines which would allow Main Street restaurants to temporarily lease on-street parking spaces for use as outdoor dining areas.

Des Moines scrimmage

Don Lund
Sports Writer

The Hawks held their annual scrimmage in Des Moines last Friday and the big news was the weather.
It was cold and it was windy.
Iowa didn’t wear full pads, so there was no tackling.
The defense usually is ahead of the offense because they know the plays.
Jay Scheel continued to shine, catching an 80-yard pass during seven-on-seven drills. Jay showed separation on the play, something Iowa needs.

Hawkeye defense

Hawk Talk

The last couple of weeks, I talked about the Iowa offense.
The next couple of weeks, I’ll look at the Iowa defense and special teams.
First, I have to comment about Desmond King, Iowa’s All-World defensive back.
When I say All-World, I mean Desmond was a unanimous consensus All-American, won the Jim Thorpe award, won the Jack Tatum award (voted the best defensive back in America), was the Big Ten’s defensive back of the year and unanimous All-Big Ten selection, yet he’s coming back for his senior year.
Good for you Desmond, who promised his Mom he would graduate.

Dear terrorist

Food For Thought

Dear terrorist,
I address you as “dear” because, unlike you, I believe all life is precious and worthy of my concern. It is because of that concern for life I write this letter to you. You will probably pay little heed to what I have to say, but I am a mother and am accustomed to having my advice ignored, at least at the moment it is offered. I have found, sometimes, the same advice that was once so nonchalantly tossed aside will be resurrected and considered more seriously at a later time. There is always hope.
