Anamosa wins April 21 golf dual against Lady Spartans

ANAMOSA– The Solon Lady Spartan golf team traveled to Fawn Creek in Anamosa on Friday, April 21, for a dual with Anamosa. It was a cool, windy night, but the course was in great condition. The home course advantage would help Anamosa post a 189-224 victory. Anamosa would have the top two scores with a 38 and 44. Senior Julia DeValk would be the low scorer for the Lady Spartans with a 52. Leah Woessner shot a 55, Heather Vance a 58 and Grace McCarty a 59.

Spartan golfers third at WaMaC divisional meet in Manchester

Stahle and McIlravy lead Spartans

MANCHESTER– The Spartans were within an eyelash of second place at the seven-team WaMaC Conference East divisional golf meet held May 2 at the Pin Oak Pub and Links in Manchester.
Solon’s varsity boys and Mount Vernon tied at 165, 10 strokes behind winner and host West Delaware. The tiebreaker went to the fifth golfer, with the Spartans a stroke behind in third, with Dyersville Beckman (170), Central DeWitt (173), Anamosa (177) and Maquoketa rounding out the field.

State qualifiers determined at May 11 meet

EPWORTH– Following a strong push for second place in the 16-team WaMaC Super Meet May 4, Solon’s girls now adjust their lineup for Thursday’s state-qualifying district meet in Marion and hope to qualify through a large contingent to the May 18-20 Class 3A state meet in Des Moines.

Solon Boy Scout Troop 120 can drive Saturday, June 3

SOLON– Solon Boy Scout Troop 120 will collect cans and bottles on Saturday, June 3, from 1-5 p.m. Scouts and parents will collect throughout the community. Can donations can also be dropped off at the St. Mary Catholic Church parking lot from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations will be used to provide camping opportunities and other Scouting activities.

Solon 22-year-old killed in Sutliff Road accident

SOLON– A 22-year-old Solon resident was killed in a two-vehicle accident just north of Solon on Sutliff Road on May 2.
According to a report by the Iowa State Patrol, Quinn Houlahan, 22, was driving a 2009 Suzuki motorcycle westbound on Sutliff Road at approximately 6:22 p.m. when an eastbound 1997 Ford F150 driven by Glen Erenberger, 54, of Solon, attempted a left turn, resulting in a collision.
Houlahan was a 2013 graduate of Solon High School, and was currently enrolled in the HVAC program at Kirkwood Community College, anticipating graduation in May (see obituary, page A4).

Be A Hunger Hero for Mary’s Meals Saturday, May 13, at SRNA

SOLON– On Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to noon, Be A Hunger Hero at Solon Recreation and Nature Area.
This event is for the entire family to enjoy a morning full of hero themed activities. A super-hero training course provided and ran by Iowa Gym-Nest, cape decorating, Solon firefighters, bounce houses, and face painting are all provided for participating children.
One mile and 5K fun runs will start at 9:30 a.m. The runs take place on the paved trail around the recreation and nature area and partially on the graveled Lake MacBride Nature Trail.

Two candidates for special city council election May 30

SOLON– Dale Snipes and Lauren Whitehead will be the two candidates seeking to fill the unexpired city council term of Mark Krall.
According to the Johnson County Auditor’s Office, Snipes and Whitehead are the only two residents to file the necessary paperwork to appear on the ballot for the Tuesday, May 30, special election.
The filing deadline for candidates was Friday, May 5.
Snipes was appointed to fill the council term, which expires Dec. 31, but a petition requesting a special election was subsequently filed with the city.

Old Gold Diner to welcome fourth graders from Lakeview May 17

SOLON– Old Gold Dining is hosting a fourth grade class on Wednesday, May 17.
There are usually 22 students that come, and organizers would like to have at least one senior citizen for each student. Non-seniors are also welcome with a reservation and a payment of $3.75 (same as seniors) for the meal. Please try to attend this fun occasion and visit with these young Solon school students. Call 624-2251 before noon the day before to make your reservations. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m., so plan to arrive by 11:15 a.m. The class that is scheduled to come this month is section 4D (Bogard).

Fiala and Erhart Seniors of the Year

Lions roar at Centennial club’s charter party

New Solon service group ready to find local projects

SOLON– It’s official.
Members of the Solon Centennial Lions Club signed their organizational charter individually at a commemorative party April 29 at the Lake MacBride Golf Course.
Close to 100 people, including visiting Lions from clubs as far away as Des Moines and Illinois, attended the festivities which included the presentation of the club’s banner, the swearing in of charter members and remarks by Past International Director and Ely native Ron Duffe.
