Splash pad construction to begin July 5

NORTH LIBERTY– Construction of the long-awaited splash pad at Penn Meadows Park is scheduled to start on Tuesday, July 5, with final completion of the project scheduled for Aug. 12.
Included in plans for the splash pad are a baseball-themed water-spray feature and flush-mounted water jets in the ground. The splash pad will offer seating around the outside for caregivers.

NL pantry 4th Annual Turkey Trot July 9

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will hold the Fourth Annual Thanksgiving in July Turkey Trot 10k/5k Races and Family 1 Mile Event on Saturday, July 9, at 8 a.m. All proceeds will go to the pantry as part of the community-wide Thanksgiving in July (TGIJ) efforts.

Balancing the library books

Council approves transfer of $11k to new library endowment fund

NORTH LIBERTY– Staff and volunteers at the North Liberty Community Library know all too well money doesn’t grow on trees, which is why they’ve opened an endowment fund to invest library donations more wisely.
The North Liberty City Council unanimously authorized the transfer of $11,000 from library funds, held in a city savings account, to the endowment at its June 14 meeting. The Friends of the Library will oversee the fund, to be administered through the Community Foundation of Johnson County (CFJC).

A tired dog is a happy dog

Puppy Love Doggie Daycare provides canines companionship

NORTH LIBERTY– Just across the city limit line on Mehaffey Bridge Road is a small blue and white farmhouse where area canines congregate daily for fun, exercise and companionship while their humans tend to the demands of their working day. The house is home to Puppy Love Doggie Daycare, a labor of love and the brainchild of Tina Tiainen and her husband, Adam.
The couple opened the canine clubhouse in December.

Bricks available for new NLYBS pavilion

NORTH LIBERTY– The Penn Meadows Park Pavilion and Commemorative Baseball Diamond are mostly complete, but the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) organization is still seeking donations to help fund the project.
Of its $250,000 goal, to be contributed over five years, NLYBS has raised $117,000 through donations from individuals and sponsors, as well as funds raised through concession stand and brick sales.

6th Annual Red, White and Bluegrass Festival July 3

NORTH LIBERTY– Located right here in the corridor, the Red, White and Bluegrass Festival has been bringing you Bluegrass for six great years now. The festival hosts great local and Midwest bluegrass and jam grass bands.
The Festival is run by the American Legion Post 1976, and is staffed by veterans and friends of veterans volunteers. This is only one of two fundraisers your local veterans do each year. Thanks for your support in the past and future; it means a ton to the North Liberty American Legion, its veterans and the charities it supports.

Spartans and Clippers split

Solon rallies back for 7-6 win but CCA takes baseball nightcap, 6-3

TIFFIN– It was a night of rallies earning wins as the Solon Spartans tangled with the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers in Tiffin Thursday, June 23.
The Spartans gave up a 3-1 lead in the opener as the Clippers put forth a five-run effort in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 6-3 lead. However, one run in the fifth and a three-run rally in the top of the sixth clinched the 7-6 win for Solon.

Solon clobbers Anamosa

Lady Spartans score 32 runs while allowing none

SOLON– In took only six innings for the Lady Spartans to score 32 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Anamosa June 27.
Solon’s varsity softball squad defeated Anamosa, 12-0 and 20-0.
The Lady Spartan pitchers– McKenna Miller and Kayla West– limited Anamosa to a single hit between the two games.
In the 12-0 win, senior Monika Bevans hit her 12th home run of the season and collected three RBI. Senior Sydney Lawson also homered, her second of the year, and scored three times.
