Bringing a legend back to life

The DanceMor opens its doors again after four-year hiatus

SWISHER– Live music and dancing has returned to the historic DanceMor ballroom in downtown Swisher after a four-year hiatus.
The venue, originally a dance floor and stage covered by a circus tent, closed in 2014 and sat dormant until a young couple with an appreciation for the history, and a passion, set out to breathe new life into it.

City of North Liberty sues BlendCard

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty successfully filed suit against BlendCard in September for failure to pay a loan agreement, according to city officials and court documents.
The Iowa-based startup company developed a rewards program for small businesses lacking the marketing power of major companies, consolidating them into one card for consumer use and in exchange providing information on consumer habits to the enrolled businesses, allowing said businesses to engage in direct and targeted marketing strategies.

Kinney faces Hora for Senate District 39

Republican challenges incumbent Democrat

NORTH LIBERTY– State Senator Kevin Kinney faces a challenger for his District 39 seat on the ballot for Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Kinney, a Democrat, was first elected in 2014.
District 39 includes the towns of Swisher, Shueyville, North Liberty (Madison Twp.), Oxford, Tiffin, Frytown and Hills and the townships of Monroe, Jefferson, Oxford, Madison, Clear Creek, Hardin, Union, West Lucas, Washington, Sharon, Liberty, Pleasant Valley, Lincoln and Fremont. The district also includes portions of Washington and Keokuk counties.

Three battle for two Johnson County Supervisor seats

Supervisors race features an incumbent and a Republican

JOHNSON COUNTY– Three candidates are on the ballot Tuesday, Nov. 6, for two seats on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. Incumbent Janelle Rettig survived a primary election to defend her seat while Pat Heiden also won on primary night to fight for the seat being vacated by Supervisor Mike Carberry. Heiden defeated Carberry in the primary. Republican Phil Hemingway enters the fray as well, hoping to be the first Republican to be elected to the board since 2013 when John Etheredge of Kalona was elected to fill the seat vacated by Sally Stutsman when she left for the Iowa Senate.

NORTH LIBERTY– From modest, rural Johnson County beginnings to forging a reputation in Iowa City, A2Z Heating and Plumbing, Inc. now begins an exciting chapter with its new home in the heart of North Liberty.
A2Z’s service radius spans from Cedar Rapids to Washington, and according to Owner Darline Horton, the company name isn’t just flair.
“There’s literally almost something under every letter of the alphabet that we do,” she remarked. “Heating, air conditioning, plumbing is the day-to-day, most of the calls that we get. But we also do a lot of the commercial refrigeration work.”

CCA All Stars play Harlem Wizards in support of school district

TIFFIN– Screams, laughter and jubilation filled the air in Tiffin Thursday night– standard fare when the Harlem Wizards come to town.
The nationally touring comedy basketball team performed at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School on the evening of Oct. 11, facing off against a crew of faculty collectively known as the CCA All Stars. The event was hosted by the CCA Community Schools Foundation, which is taking new initiative to support the school district and its programming.

The sound of silence

Swisher's 6 p.m. siren falls silent

SWISHER– Small towns have a reputation as being quiet, and the little community of Swisher, in the northwest corner of Johnson County, is no exception. However, after recent actions by the city council, it’s gotten even quieter.
The council voted unanimously on Sept. 10 to discontinue sounding the town’s outdoor warning siren daily at 6 p.m., a tradition dating back to the 1970s.

First United Methodist Church facility completes expansion

NORTH LIBERTY– One of North Liberty’s most prominent churches has undergone an ambitious expansion to meet the needs of its growing congregation.
First United Methodist Church, located at 85 N. Jones Blvd., plans to celebrate the milestone with a dedication ceremony and grand opening this weekend.
