Optimist 13th annual holiday food basket distribution

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Optimist held their 13th annual kid-friendly holiday food basket distribution at Van Allen Elementary School. The club provided food for when students are out of school for the holiday break, for a total of $3,800 in items such as canned foods, pasta, cereal, bread and fresh fruit. The club served 128 children last year and anticipates an increase this year, with figures to be available at the end of the school week. They were joined by Danielle Weipert, Jill Winders and Kris Hynek of the North Liberty Family Resource Center.

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District’s School Board of Directors held three public hearings on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Clear Creek Elementary, in Oxford, during its regular monthly meeting.

K-9 stop nets eight pounds of meth in Tiffin

TIFFIN– Two non-Iowa residents have been arrested on drug and weapon charges after a weekend traffic stop in Tiffin.
After running a stop sign, Dawn M. Colunga, 38, of Indianapolis, was stopped by Coralville police on the 100 block of Village Drive at about 7:05 p.m. Friday. With the assistance of a K-9, police searched her Honda Civic and found out eight-and-a-half pounds of crystal methamphetamine, a small bag of heroin and a small portion of marijuana.

NORTH LIBERTY– For those of us who struggle getting photos to hang on the wall straight (and who doesn’t?) a North Liberty inventor has the solution.
“Everybody is frustrated with hanging pictures; I don’t care who you talk to,” said Roger Miller, creator of PicGenie123. “I created the product out of my own frustration– bottom line.”
The Iowan developed a unique new approach to hanging wall objects using a simple set of hardware. His invention even gained the approval of The Home Depot, which recently started selling the product in over 2,000 stores across the U.S. and its territories.

NLFD battles wind-driven house fire

One miserable day

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Fire Chief Brian Platz was stunned.
“In 25 years in the fire service, I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said.
Platz was reacting to a wind-driven blaze that completely destroyed a house in the 2800-block of 270th Street NW on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
The alarm was sounded shortly before 10 a.m. as a report of smoke coming from a residence at 2855 270th Street NW. The North Liberty Fire Department’s (NLFD) response was immediate.

Solon girls fall to Anamosa, 55-36, and Beckman, 57-43

SOLON– Solon’s girls dropped to 2-7 last week with losses to Anamosa and Dyersville Beckman.
The Lady Spartans traveled to Anamosa on Tuesday, Dec. 12, and came out flat, losing 55-36. It was the return to play of Solon junior Taylor Ryan.
Solon kept pace with the Raiders in the first quarter, trailing 15-12, but the Blue Raiders silenced the Lady Spartans in the second period, outscoring them 14-1, for a 29-13 halftime score.

SOLON–The Spartan varsity basketball team ran away late from Anamosa in a 62-48 home win Dec. 12, but fell to Beckman Catholic at Dyersville, 70-60.
The loss dropped Solon to 4-2 on the season.
Hosting Anamosa, the Spartans took control of the game in the second quarter, limiting the Blue Raiders to just three points for a 20-16 halftime edge.
Solon added cushion to the lead in the third quarter and held a 46-36 advantage heading into the fourth.

Solon wrestlers take first at Regina

Solon wrestlers put loss to West Delaware behind them,

SOLON– Solon Head Wrestling Coach Blake Williams didn’t want Thursday’s results to carry over to Saturday.
The Spartan varsity wrestlers were handed a convincing 48-23 loss by West Delaware at home Dec. 14.
“Although it was a disappointing night, the message to the team was learn from it and to put it behind us,” Williams said. “It is a quick turnaround Saturday.”
The team responded with an overwhelming win at the 14-team Regina Invitational Dec. 16.

Jerry Linderbaum alumni tournament, Dec. 30

SOLON– The Jerry Linderbaum Memorial Alumni Basketball Tournament will be held Saturday, Dec. 30. Tip off is scheduled for 9 a.m. with games held at the high school and new middle school. Sign up or check in at the high school gym. Sponsored by the Solon Athletic Booster Club, the tournament is double elimination with a cost of $20 per participant. Proceeds benefit the Jerry Linderbaum Scholarship Fund and the Solon boys basketball program.
