Shueyville United Methodist Men’s Pancake Supper April 1

SHUEYVILLE– Shueyville United Methodist Men’s Pancake Supper will be held Friday, April 1, from 5-7 p.m. at the church. The pubic is invited to attend and enjoy good food and fellowship with friends. The all-you-can eat supper includes pancakes, eggs, ham, sausage, hash browns and beverage. This supper is used to support mission activities both at home and around the world. The church is located at 1195 Steeple Ln. NE in Shueyville. The cost for the supper is adults $6, ages 3-12 $3, and those under 3 are free.

Brett Smith Memorial Run/Walk April 16

SOLON– The Third Annual Brett Smith Memorial Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, April 16, in Solon, starting and finishing at the Solon American Legion ball diamond pavilion.
The son of Jeff and Carmen Smith, Brett Smith was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukemia in January of his senior year at Solon High School. He was treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics but was later sent to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and passed away there on April 16, 2012.

City-wide garage sales

Save the date, city-wide garage sales will be Friday, June 3, and Saturday June 4. Look for registration forms beginning in mid-April. For those who do not have enough items for a sale of their own, think about donating items to the library for its fundraising sale. The library cannot accept clothing, encyclopedias, LPs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, old VCRS, old TV sets, or old computers. Please appropriately recycle those items. The library will accept items for the garage sale anytime– no need to wait.

Lakeview PTO hosts 5th Annual Spartan Dash Saturday, April 23

SOLON– The Lakeview Elementary PTO will host its Fifth Annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 23, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event serving as the Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year. Interested individuals should sign up to participate in the event with a “family team.”

SHS Art Club’s Empty Bowls Luncheon to End Hunger April 9

SOLON– On Saturday, April 9, the Solon High School Art Club will host the Seventh Annual “Empty Bowls Luncheon to End Hunger” in the Solon High School Commons from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Guests will be served a modest lunch of soup and bread in a ceramic bowl handmade by a local student, educator or community member for a suggested minimum donation of $10. Guests are encouraged to keep the bowl with the club’s compliments and gratitude.

Solon Optimist Club hoisting Avenue of Flags fundraiser

SOLON– The Solon Optimist Club is ready to raise some flags. And take them down.
The Optimists are gearing up for their 2017 Avenue of Flags program, an annual fundraiser with a patriotic spirit.
Subscribers to the program receive a 17-inch deep receptacle placed in their yard. Starting at sunrise on each of five holidays, club members and other volunteers will place a three foot by five foot flag on a 10 foot pole into the holder. The flag then flies until sunset when it is retrieved.

Red Vespa owners propose outdoor service for Main Street

Council members leery of losing parking

SOLON– Would the City be willing to take another step toward developing the culture of Main Street by temporarily sacrificing parking spots to allow for outdoor food service?
The owners of Red Vespa Pizzeria and Wine Bar were on the agenda for the March 16 Solon City Council meeting to find out.
Red Vespa owners Aziz and Angie Longou were at the council session with a proposal to provide seasonal outdoor service by leasing a single Main Street parking spot in front of their business.
“It makes people want to go there,” Aziz Longou told council members. “Just because of the atmosphere.”

Rural home destroyed

Firefighters battle blaze at house on Starry Night Ct. NE

SOLON– A large, rural Solon home in a secluded, wooded area in western Newport Township was destroyed by fire Monday, March 28.
Firefighters from Solon and surrounding departments were called to 3990 Starry Night Ct. NE at approximately 6 p.m. to find a home belonging to the John and Tami Mergen family fully engulfed. The fire had spread from the garage to the roof and attic of the house, preventing firefighters from entering, according to Assistant Fire Chief Scott Wolfe.

Spring football opened for the Iowa Hawkeyes last week and the Hawks look to go into fall as one of the favorites in the Big Ten West.
Iowa finished the season ranked ninth in the nation, the fifth time since 2002 the Hawkeyes finished in the top 10.
Iowa started the season 12-0 for the first time in school history. The 12 wins are a program record. It was the fifth time in school history Iowa has completed an undefeated regular season, the first since 1922.

Richard and Janice Horak a gift to Iowa’s Future

Richard and Janice Horak were recognized at the Gift to Iowa’s Future recognition day when they received recognition for their conservation efforts. The Horaks’ conservation easement is being held by Bur Oak Land Trust. The Gift to Iowa’s Future recognition day was Thursday, March 24., and included remarks from Governor Terry Branstad and Department of Natural Resources Director Chuck Gipp. The program included the State of Iowa honoring more than 20 landowners, families, and organizations for gifts in 2015 of conservation land, land value, and conservation easements.
