Lady Spartans split with Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Solon’s varsity softball team split a road doubleheader with the Williamsburg Raiders July 1.
Williamsburg took the opener, 8-7, in eight innings, then Solon stormed back for a 10-0 shutout in the nightcap.
The Lady Spartans shot out of the gates for three runs in the top half of the first inning, but the Raiders responded with a run and then tied game one with two more in the second.
After two scoreless innings, the offenses came back to life.
Solon scored twice in the fifth, but Williamsburg plated three runs later that inning to take a 6-5 lead.

DYERSVILLE– Beckman Catholic was 7-2 in its last nine games.
Solon went 3-5-1 in its last nine.
The Spartans dipped to 17-12-2 on the season after dropping a doubleheader July 5 to the Blazers, who improved to 25-10.
Beckman took the opener 6-1, then broke open a tight game for a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
The Spartans had swept Williamsburg at home July 1, and a hitter’s game against Cedar Rapids Xavier was postponed with an 8-7 score after two-and-a-half innings July 2, but Solon Head Coach Keith McSweeney is concerned about his offense.

County supervisors tackle a $138,000 shortfall in the BHUCC construction estimate

IOWA CITY– Planning continues for Johnson County’s Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center (BHUCC), a one-stop shop for acute substance abuse and behavioral health situations, to be built near the intersection of South Gilbert Street and Southgate Avenue in Iowa City. The county purchased the land one year ago at a cost of $1,350,000. An existing structure was demolished and removed earlier this year.

Celebrating Independence Day and 150 years in a big way in Oxford

OXFORD– With two long blasts of the mighty whistle, and a plume of black smoke, Iowa Interstate Railroad (IAIS) locomotive 6988 started chugging east with a handful of vintage passenger cars filled with riders. The 6988, a Chinese-built QJ Class steam locomotive, was brought to Oxford on Thursday, July 4, to power six excursions to Iowa City and back as a fundraiser for the all-volunteer Oxford Fire Department held in conjunction with Independence Day activities and the town’s 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial).

Big Rove features big heat

It was one hot ride. Over 1,000 cyclists pedaled into Solon Saturday, June 29, as part of the Big Rove, a 36-mile RAGBRAI training ride. Big Rove, sponsored by RAGBRAI (Register’s Great Annual Bicycle Race Across Iowa), the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, Big Grove Brewery and Think Iowa City, took over the intersection of Main Street and Iowa Street for a street party most of the day. Solon was the midway point for the ride.

Council approves mass notification system

City will be able to send public alerts via phone, email

SOLON– It’s a better system at a bargain rate.
Solon council members approved a new voice and text emergency notification system at a June 19 meeting.
For an annual $1,000 subscription and a $500 startup fee, the city will be able to issue public safety announcements to all land lines as well as enrolled email and cell phone numbers.
According to City Administrator Cami Rasmussen, the City of Ely initiated a group membership rate with Nixle for its mass notification system last fall.

SOLON– Having the Haggard Brothers perform Friday night, July 19, is next-level stuff for Beef Days.
Ben and Noel, sons of country music icon Merle Haggard, have teamed together to tour the country and will take the stage at Beef Days at 9:30 p.m. for a 90-minute tribute to their father’s music.
“It’s going to be cool,” exuded Beef Days Entertainment Chair Dean Manternach. “It’s going to be really great.”
He’s expecting a standing-room-only crowd for the biggest name ever booked for the two-day free community festival.

Strengthen • Grow • Evolve campaign raising $5.5 million to preserve buildings, expand programs

NORTH LIBERTY– When you live in North Liberty, Solon or anywhere in Johnson County, you don’t have to travel far for top-shelf arts and entertainment.
The historic Englert Theatre and FilmScene in Iowa City, both embarked on significant facility campaigns, understand sometimes the arts have to come to you.
The two organizations have banded together for Strengthen • Grow • Evolve (SGE), a $6.5 million effort to update and expand with the goal of making Iowa City the greatest small city for the arts in America.

More than 1,300 bicyclists to flood Main Street for RAGBRAI training ride

SOLON– Solon will be at the turn for Big Rove, a 36-mile RAGBRAI training ride Saturday, July 29.
Downtown will the mid-point for over 1,300 bicyclists as they travel from Big Grove Brewery & Taproom in Iowa City to its namesake in Solon for lunch and back, with stops in North Liberty along the way.
The event, sponsored by RAGBRAI (Register’s Great Annual Bicycle Race Across Iowa), the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, Big Grove Brewery and Think Iowa City, will take over the intersection of Main Street and Iowa Street for a street party most of the day.

Oxford’s Sesquicentennial is July 4, 5 & 6

OXFORD– According to the Rock Island Railroad’s 1962-63 fall and winter passenger train timetable, Oxford, Iowa, is located 252 miles west of Chicago. The City’s website lists a population of approximately 800. It’s the administrative home of the Clear Creek Amana Community School District, is located about a mile south of U.S. Highway 6, and about as far north of Interstate 80.
And on Thursday, July 4, it’ll be celebrating not only our nation’s 243rd birthday on Independence Day but also the town’s 150th anniversary, or “Sesquicentennial.”
