Completed, but not yet finished

CCA Middle School addition work on-hold until students leave

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– The addition to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Middle School in Tiffin continues to frustrate the administration and school board, despite being put into service and occupied earlier this year.
The $14.8 million, 60,000-square-foot, two-story addition was part of a $48 million bond issue voters approved in 2014 to alleviate over-crowding while providing additional space for future enrollment growth in the district. The project was to have been completed ahead of the start of the current school year but was soon besieged by delays.

North Liberty earns national “playful city” designation

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty has been honored with a 2016 Playful City USA designation for the fifth time, and was one of only three cities named in Iowa. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the national recognition program honors cities and towns across the country for making their cities more playable. North Liberty invests in playgrounds, parks, green spaces and trails to make the community more playable. The city continues to support local youth sports, and is adding a splash pad in Penn Meadows Park.

Stepping up to lead

North Liberty Community Pantry gets a new director

NORTH LIBERTY– Where the North Liberty Community Pantry is concerned, new executive director Kaila Rome believes in treating everyone with dignity and respect. That includes individuals or families visiting the pantry to receive food, and the volunteers serving them. She also loves how the community returns that respect.

Cyclists pedal to increase organ donation awareness

NORTH LIBERTY– A conversation with cycling fanatic Dave Full will often lead to a topic people may not expect.
“Are you an organ donor?” he’ll ask. “Check your driver’s license right now.”

Cracking no cause for alarm

NORTH LIBERTY– A Highway 965 bridge that’s ferried traffic across the Iowa River since 1955 is in need of updates– and soon.
Structural deficiencies of a two-lane bridge between North Liberty and Swisher, discovered last Wednesday, May 18, during routine Johnson County Secondary Roads maintenance, resulted in an emergency lane closure, 20-ton maximum gross vehicle weight limit and traffic light controls set-up. The action was voted upon by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

Spartans knock off CP-U, 1-0

SOLON– The last home game was the last match of the regular season for the Solon, and a senior came through on Senior Night.
Parker Mueller’s header in front of the net with four minutes remaining gave the Spartans a 1-0 soccer win over Center Point-Urbana May 17.
Solon controlled the tempo most of the match, with 20 shots on goal to the Stormin’ Pointers two, both saved by goalie Anthony Bullard.

Solon Spartan Trap Team honors Brett Smith with memorial shoot

MUSCATINE– The Solon Spartan Trap team hosted the 2nd Annual Brett Smith Memorial Trap Shoot on Saturday, May 14, at the Muscatine County Izaac Walton League Trap Shooting facility. Brett Smith was a 2011 Solon High School graduate who participated in trap shooting while in high school. His battle with leukemia began during his senior year in high school and ended with his death in 2013. He loved the outdoors and participating in shooting sports. The Solon Spartan Trap Team chooses to honor him by hosting an annual competive middle school and high school meet.

Roeder and 4x800 take fifth, 4x100 takes sixth and Linderbaum takes seventh

DES MOINES– Children grow up learning to swim in the calming, blue, chlorinated waters of the local pool, hoping someday for the blue embrace of the ocean and its much deeper depths.
The Spartans took to those deeper depths on Thursday, May 19, to test their abilities against the best Iowa’s Class 3A had to offer, finishing in a three-way tie, with Grinnell and Assumption, for 17th in a field of 43 teams.

Durr scores 100th

SOLON– Going into the home finale May 19 against Mid-Prairie, Josie Durr needed six goals to reach 100 for her high school career.
With only a single goal scored in the first half for Durr, it took an offensive onslaught in the second period, but she reached the mark with about four minutes left in the match.
The home crowd cheered, helped up signs and released balloons to mark the occasion as Durr jogged back to midfield to be congratulated by teammates.
The Lady Spartans overwhelmed Mid-Prairie 8-0 for a Senior Night victory.
