Why Halloween?

Food For Thought

Throughout most of the month of October, we see pumpkins on porches, witches on broomsticks and ghosts in the shrubbery. We dress in frightening costumes, hide our faces with masks, and beg for treats from neighbors and total strangers. Why do we do it?

CCA varsity volleyball wins, 3-1, over Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball team improved to 15-14 with a 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-11, 25-10) win on the road against the Williamsburg Raiders Tuesday, Oct. 3.
Shauntina Williams led the Creek Girls with 16 kills, Zoe Boehme made 20 assists, Amelia Pereria produced a trio of ace serves and Jordan Neely came up with 43 digs.
The Clippers compete Thursday, Oct.12, in the WaMaC Tournament at Marion High School starting at 4 p.m. to close out the regular season.

Barkers show the way for CCA

WELLMAN– The varsity “Creek Boys” of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) took the runner-up spot in team points Monday, Oct. 2, at Iowa Mennonite’s Cross Country Invitational held in Wellman. Mid-Prairie’s boys won the meet with 45 points, followed by the Clippers with 49. Brandon Barker set the pace for CCA with a third-place finish, in 17:22.48, while Nick O’Connor and Jack Sexton posted top-10 finishes in eighth and ninth place, respectively.

Volleyball Clippers fall, 3-1, to Indians

Williams leads CCA with 17 kills against Marion

MARION– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team fell, 3-1, to the Marion Indians Tuesday, Sept. 26, in Marion. The Indians took the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-17, before the Clippers rallied back to a 26-24 win in the third set. Marion sank CCA, 25-19, in the fourth set to end the match.
Shauntina Williams led the Clippers offense with 17 kills, Zoe Boehme produced 25 assists, Jordan Neely made 28 digs and Karsyn Stratton came up with a pair of solo blocks.
The Clippers dropped to an 11-12 record, while Marion improved to 13-7.

Women of Troy sweep Trojans

IC West varsity V-ball wins, 3-0, over Waterloo East

WATERLOO– Iowa City West High’s varsity volleyball Women of Troy improved to 17-10 overall with a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) of the Waterloo East High Trojans on Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Waterloo. The loss dropped East High to 3-21 on the season.
Senior Colby Greene led West High with a baker’s dozen (13) kills and six solo blocks. Rylee Fay produced 28 assists, a dozen digs and four ace serves, and Ellie Kouba made four block assists.
The West High sophomores won 3-2 (16-21, 21-17, 21-17, 14-21, 15-9) and the junior varsity (JV) Women of Troy won 2-0 (25-18, 25-7).

Creek Girls 4th in home V-ball invite

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball team finished the day fourth in the final standings of its home volleyball invitational tournament.
North Scott won the day with a 4-1 match record and 9-4 game showing followed by Iowa Valley (4-1, 9-3), Union (3-2, 8-5), the Clippers (3-2, 7-5), Central Clinton, DeWitt (1-4, 2-8) and Mid-Prairie (0-5, 0-10).

Creek Boys take second at Lynx XC invitational

TROY MILLS– Clear Creek Amana’s varsity boys cross country team took the team runner-up spot Saturday, Oct. 7, at North Linn High School’s invitational meet in Troy Mills. The Clippers put up 80 points behind winner Marion, with 67. Nick O’Connor, a sophomore, led the Creek Boys with a seventh-place finish in 17:13. Brandon Barker also cracked the top-10 with a ninth-place finish in 17:17.

Nock and Greiner clobber at MVC Super Meet

DUBUQUE– Iowa City West High’s Bailey Nock and Kolby Greiner put up decisive wins Thursday, October 5 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Super Meet held at Dubuque’s Soccer Complex. Greiner won the varsity boys 5K race in 15:01, a full 1:42 ahead of second-place Addison Kalb of Dubuque Hempstead, while Nock won the varsity girls 5K in 18:07.10, nearly 13 seconds ahead of Linn-Mar’s Micah Poellet, the runner-up.

Trojans undefeated on gridiron with soggy win over Cougars

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans remained undefeated and on top in Class 4A District 8 after defeating the visiting Cougars of Cedar Rapids Kennedy 34-20 Friday, October 6.

Greiner leads Iowa City West with 2nd-place finish

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s varsity boys took the team runner-up spot Tuesday, Sept. 26, at their home cross country invitational, held at the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course. Cedar Rapids Prairie won the meet with 27 points, topping the 68-point Trojans.
Kolby Greiner led West High with a second-place finish in 15:44.
