Four-way stop at Main and West dies for lack of a second

Council shoots down Main Street stop sign

SOLON– Council members heard there are too many stop signs on Main Street.
Solon Public Works Director Scott Kleppe proposed making the intersection of West and Main streets a four-way stop, but the motion to approve it died for lack of a second at a Jan. 3 city council meeting.
A year ago, Kleppe said, the city created a four-way stop at the intersection of Main and Dubuque streets to help control traffic.

Tough loss for women

Hawk Talk

The Purdue Boilermakers came to Carver last Saturday and knocked off the Hawkeyes, 76-70.
This loss hurt in more ways than one.
Iowa’s two losses came against teams that were ranked higher.
Florida State was ranked 13th when they beat Iowa, 94-93, in Iowa City on Nov. 29. The Hawks had five players in double figures, including Tania Davis, who had 14 points and five assists. Makenzie Meyer had six points and five assists.

A much-needed win

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men finally got in the win column last week in the Big Ten at Illinois pulling out a 104-97 overtime win.
I didn’t see this coming.
Iowa starting the Big Ten 0-5, that is.
Before the season, I thought the Hawks had a chance to have a good season and have a shot of getting in the NCAA tournament.
I didn’t see Christian Williams transferring and Connor McCaffery suffering illness and injury and not being able to play.
Connor was planning on redshirting but that changed when Christian transferred. Now it looks like that is back on the table.

Another big win for wrestlers

Hawk Talk

The seventh-ranked Hawkeye wrestlers knocked off the third-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys last Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The crowd was big (over 13,000), the atmosphere was electric and you had the two most storied programs in wrestling.
Oklahoma State has won 34 NCAA titles, Iowa 23.
The third-most titles are eight by Iowa State.
The Cowboys have 1,098 dual wins, the Hawkeyes 995.
The Hawks now have a 13-11 advantage in Iowa City.
You start with Spencer Lee at 125 pounds and end with Sam Stoll at 285.
Both picked up key wins.
