NLFD Salute to Summer Aug. 20 at Bobber’s

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Fire Department’s annual Salute to Summer returns Saturday, Aug. 20, at Bobber’s Grill, located at 1850 Scales Bend Rd. NE, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Join community members for food, kids activities, a vacation raffle, poker run, silent auction and more. Music by Two Buck Chuck begins at 7 p.m.
Salute to Summer is a fundraiser held by the North Liberty Firefighter Foundation annually. Funds raised are directed to the North Liberty Fire Department for firefighter and EMT training, as well as community support efforts and fire equipment expenses.

Servolution Aug. 19 at Penn Meadows

NORTH LIBERTY– The annual Servolution back-to-school event for families is back again for its fifth year. LIFEchurch of Coralville, along with dozens of other agencies, churches, and schools, will serve families in North Liberty and Coralville as they transition back to school. Servolution is held at Kirkwood Elementary in Coralville on Aug. 22 from 2-5 p.m. and at Penn Meadows Park in North Liberty on Aug. 19 from 3–6 p.m. Families are given shoes, haircuts, groceries, school supplies and much more. Organizers are still looking for volunteers, shoes and other donations if you want to help!

NL Pantry holding free canning class Aug. 18

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry is hosting a free canning class Thursday, Aug. 19, from 6-8 p.m. at the South Slope Community Center, 980 N. Front St.
Registration is required and class size is limited. Register by calling 319-626-2711 or stopping by the pantry.

CCA facilities planning committee spends summer gathering facts

TIFFIN— If current projections for future growth are correct, and current trends of enrollment growth continue, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District will need more schools. Superintendent Tim Kuehl said as many as three more elementary schools may well be needed within the next ten-to-twelve years. However, there are no plans dictating where or when these or any other school buildings will be built or expanded.

Free tickets for NL Night with the Kernels

NORTH LIBERTY– On Friday, Aug. 19, the Cedar Rapids Kernels, a Minnesota Twins minor league affiliate, will host North Liberty Night with the Kernels, and the city has some free tickets to give away.
Starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, adults can get up to four tickets at the North Liberty Community Center front desk. There are a limited number of free tickets, and they will be distributed in person on a first-come, first-served basis only. Those picking up must show proof of residency– ID or current utility bill indicating a “52317” zip code.

No bus, no problem

City officials, principals collaborate on crosswalk safety

NORTH LIBERTY– For the more than 450 North Liberty elementary students without busing this school year, a special committee has a plan.
After months of meeting with principals, police officers and organizations like Safe Routes to School, the North Liberty Traffic-Safety Task Force has compiled recommendations for safer walking routes and crosswalks.

Solon High School wrestling team participates in Luther’s Team Wrestling Camp

DECORAH– The Solon High School High School wrestling team participated in the 2016 Luther College Team Wrestling Camp in Decorah.
The 2016 Luther wrestling camps, directed by Luther Head Wrestling Coach Dave Mitchell, have grown into some of the largest and most recognized athletic camps in the Midwest. There are six wrestling camps on Luther’s campus each summer that include more than 1,000 wrestlers and 150 coaches.
Recent clinicians have included several Olympian, NCAA champion and All-American wrestlers, including Cael Sanderson, Brandon Slay and Brent Metcalf.

Solon baseball players named to All-WaMaC teams

Sophomore Luke Ira named first team

SOLON– Five Solon varsity baseball players earned WaMaC conference East-Division baseball honors for the 2016 season.
The selections were announced Thursday, July 21.
Sophomore shortstop Luke Ira made the First Team, while senior third baseman Patrick Maston and sophomore first baseman Tyler Linderbaum received Second Team honors.
Sophomore Eric Weetman and senior Dillon Drake were named Honorable Mention.

Volleyball runs in her family

Meet new Solon High School varsity volleyball coach Sarah Ferin

SOLON– After Peter Gustin stepped down in February to take a position as volunteer assistant coach at the University of Iowa, the stars aligned perfectly for Sarah Ferin to take over as Head Varsity Volleyball Coach of the Lady Spartans.
The timing couldn’t have been better and Solon is the perfect place for the Cedar Rapids native and former assistant coach of the Xavier Saints to embark on the next phase of her career.
