Council delays decision on mayoral vacancy

Special election automatically triggered by auditor’s office March 1

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty is still without an official mayor.
At a regularly scheduled North Liberty City Council meeting Tuesday, Jan. 10, council members decided to again postpone the decision to either appoint a mayor or hold a special election.
“I would suggest we hold off and not take any action tonight, and review again at the next meeting,” said council member Jim Sayre.

Coralville man faces charges for assault with condiment bottle

NORTH LIBERTY– A bar fight at J&A Tap, 440 N. Dubuque St., over the weekend led to the arrest of a Coralville man, who now faces several charges that could result in prison time.
According to complaints filed by the North Liberty Police Department, Tyler J. Ratzlaff, 26, admitted to throwing a glass Heinz 57 bottle at another patron early Sunday morning, although he had no justification for why he committed the act.
Officers responded to the scene at 12:21 a.m. and initially met outside the bar with the victim, who suffered a serious laceration across her forehead down to the skull.

Audit report for fiscal year 2016 available

NORTH LIBERTY– Winkel, Parker & Foster, CPA PC today released an audit report on the City of North Liberty for the year ending June 30, 2016.
The city’s receipts totaled $26,826,568, a 14.6 percent increase from 2015. The receipts included $8,053,179 in property tax; $4,509,489 in tax increment financing revenues; $10,096,467 from charges for service; $2,078,288 from operating grants, contributions and restricted interest; $1,673,552 from capital grants, contributions and restricted interest; $29,515 from unrestricted interest on cash investments; and $386,078 from other receipts.

Man shot accidentally in Golfview mobile home court

NORTH LIBERTY– A 19-year-old male in the Golfview Mobile Home Park was accidentally shot, according to authorities.
At 3:15 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, officers of the North Liberty Police Department responded to 35 Golfview Dr. in response to a report of a 19-year-old who had sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.
On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the City of North Liberty issued a press release stating the victim reportedly did not know the gunman, and a witness stated that a black male, wearing a dark-colored hoodie, shot the victim with a handgun and fled northeast on foot through the trailer court.

FARGO, N.D.– The National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) announced the advancement of Jim White from Solon High School as a finalist for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association national coach of the year in the sport of softball. Eight finalists from across the nation will be honored during The National Coach of the Year Awards Banquet which will take place at the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s national convention at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria, Illinois, on the evening of June 21.

Lisbon dominates with six champs to Spartans’ four

SOLON– It was a full day of déjà vu for many Solon wrestlers last Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational.
The Spartans placed second behind Lisbon after several repeat matchups from last year– including an overtime duel at 160 pounds between senior Trevor Nelson and Wapello’s Rogan Pforts, whom Nelson beat in 2016 to become Solon’s lone champion.

SOLON– It was Friday the 13th, and it proved unlucky for Solon’s varsity basketball teams.
The Spartans and Lady Spartans both fell by double digits to Mount Vernon.
The boys fell to 6-3 with a 60-40 home loss, while the girls were doubled up in Mount Vernon, 56-28. The Lady Spartans dropped to 4-8 on the season.
In Solon, the boys were within striking distance, trailing by five points at halftime, but the Mustangs outscored the Spartans 32-17 in the second half to put the game out of reach.

Council votes down Lofts plan

Lack of parking, terse words derail site plan

SOLON– That ended badly.
The site plan for a proposal to rehabilitate the former St. Mary Catholic Church auditorium went down in flames when discussions over parking requirements devolved at a Solon City Council meeting Jan. 11.
For nearly 45 minutes, city officials and Bill Wittig, representing Prairie Equity Group, LLC, went back and forth on the need for off-street parking to accommodate potential first- and second-floor commercial tenants of the building.

Solon Boy Scout Troop 120 annual soup supper Saturday, Jan. 28

SOLON– Solon Boy Scout Troop 120 is hosting its annual soup supper on Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary Catholic Church from 5-7 p.m. The soup supper features soups of all varieties. Previous years’ soups have included traditional soups such as chicken noodle and chili as well as some not so traditional such as Demok (spinach and coconut milk) and shrimp chowder.

Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Contest Jan. 29

SOLON– The Knights of Columbus Council #12129, in Solon, will hold a basketball free throw contest for competitors ages 8 to 14 on Sunday, Jan. 29. The competition will be held at the Solon Middle School in conjunction with the Solon Optimist Club. Signup and warm ups start at 12:30 p.m. with competition from 1-2 p.m. Winners at each age level may earn the opportunity to compete in district, state and international levels.
