Dance for a Difference fundraiser scores big

NORTH LIBERTY– It was a vivacious scene in Liberty High School’s auxiliary gym on the afternoon of Sunday, April 22.
About 100 dancers signed up for Dance for a Difference, which ran from noon to 4 p.m. The event featured a DJ, face painting, food, a costume dance raffle, a silent auction and a teacher dance at 3 p.m.

Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop historic site in Haverhill update

HAVERHILL– On March 26, Solon resident Pat Ikan traveled to the State Historical Society office in Des Moines to meet with Historic Sites Manager Jennifer Bancescu to get an update on the Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop (MEBS) in Haverhill.
Ikan, a great-granddaughter of Matthew Edel and retired educator, is committed to raise awareness of the family’s unique historic site and its place in Iowa’s history.
Ikan provided the following updates:

No hydrants? No problem

Firefighters practice moving big water

LAKE MACBRIDE– Fire hydrants.
Most towns have them strategically placed on street corners and other easily accessed locations, so firefighters can quickly find them, connect their pumpers to them and assure a steady and uninterrupted water supply.
However out in the rural areas and in towns without a municipal water system, those familiar fireplugs are nowhere to be seen.
Firefighters have utilized tank trucks, or tankers, to haul water to fire scenes for as long as there has been motorized fire apparatus.

Memories

Walkin'

We’re visiting Mom and Dad in Chicago this weekend.
Mom likes to employ Sabra’s green thumb and have her help plant the garden the past couple of years, and brother Bob is taking Dad and I fishing.

On being a gardener

Food For Thought

The seed catalogs have been thumbed through, pages have corners turned down, order blanks have a few tentative lines filled in, but the past six weeks or so have not been encouraging. We have put off starting those first seedlings in the greenhouse, sun porch, or under plant lights in the basement. Not long ago, we looked out the window at the patch of earth we’d hoped to have already tilled and partially planted and what did we see? Snow. Not in piles, granted, but lurking in chilly little patches where the meager sun seldom reaches.
