Access road across Coralville Dam to close Oct. 31 to Nov. 4 for rail and cable work

CORALVILLE– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Coralville Lake will be completely closing the roadway across the Coralville Dam beginning Monday, Oct. 31, at 8 a.m. and will reopen on Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. The closure applies to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Keystone Place at Forevergreen ribbon cutting, open house Nov. 2

NORTH LIBERTY– On Nov. 2, State Senator Kevin Kinney, North Liberty Mayor Amy Nielsen, North Liberty City Council members, the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, and other local officials will celebrate the grand opening of the new Keystone Place at Forevergreen retirement community with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house. This event is open to the business community.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 4 p.m., with the open house to follow until 6:30 p.m. Remarks are anticipated around 5 p.m.
Keystone Place is located at 1275 W. Forevergreen Rd. in North Liberty.

Little Hands on the Prairie

Annual Kent Park prairie seed harvest Nov. 5

OXFORD– Play a role in expanding the native prairie areas throughout Johnson County. Johnson County Conservation (JCC) hosts its annual prairie seed harvest on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon at F.W. Kent Park. All volunteers, including individuals, groups and families are welcome to attend, no prior experience is needed.

Former council member running unofficially for seat

SOLON– Dale Snipes didn’t realize how much he missed being on the Solon City Council.
Snipes, 59, was appointed to the council in February 2015 and stood for election in November of that year. But when the hours of his employment changed, he made the decision to step down, and his letter of resignation was accepted July 7.
Afterward, he received comments from citizens expressing regret about his move, something he called “humbling.”

Swisher Auxiliary Annual Turkey Homemade Turkey Dinner Nov. 5

SWISHER– On Saturday, Nov. 5, from 4:30-7:30 p.m., the Swisher Auxiliary hosts its Annual Homemade Turkey Dinner. Adult meals cost $10 and kids meals are $5. The Junior Auxiliary will host Turkey bingo upstairs through dinner. Bingo cost is $1 per game with winners receiving a turkey to take home. Arts and crafts will be offered for children attending the event during bingo.

Solon Old Gold Diner planning for Christmas Tree Walk

SOLON– Last year’s Christmas Tree Walk at the Palmer House Stable was such a success, the Old Gold Diner is going to do it again. The Old Gold Diner is seeking representation from Solon area residents and clubs to serve on a committee to plan the 2017 event with an eye toward adding more features. Set-up for the Christmas Tree Walk is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2. The tree walk will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, starting at 9 a.m. For more information or to volunteer, contact McAtee between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at 624-2551 (please try to avoid 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.).

Swisher Junior Auxiliary Halloween Fair Sunday, Oct. 30

SWISHER– The Swisher Junior Auxiliary invites everyone to attend the Halloween fair Sunday, Oct. 30, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Swisher American Legion. Each year the event seeks to bring the community together. Attendees can enjoy a hay rack ride through Swisher and s’mores and hot chocolate in the pavilion. Dress to impress the judges; the Costume Contest winners and prizes will be announced at 5:45 p.m.

Our Lord’s Church October Fest luncheon Saturday, Oct. 29

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will host October Fest on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The luncheon will serve three kinds of hot soup, hot dogs and chili dogs will also be served from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Kolaches, cinnamon rolls, cream puffs and lots of other baked goods will also be available. Cheese Curds from Ely’s Dan and Debbie’s Creamery will be on hand as will breads from Sykora’s Bakery. Kalona Ice Cream Bars will also be available for $2, however please call for large orders.
A review of Christmas gifts and crafts will be part of the event.

Silent auction to support SMS teacher Roger Thompson Nov. 2

SOLON– Solon Middle School staff are holding a silent auction to support teacher Roger Thompson, recently diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. The silent auction will be Nov. 2 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. and Nov. 3 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria.
Auction items include handmade quilts, four tickets to Solon High School’s winter musical, gift cards from local restaurants and businesses, a signed Iowa football, baked goods, two tickets to the Iowa-Nebraska football game, gift baskets and much, much more.

Appointed council seats to fill

August decision puts one-year and three-year terms on ballot

SOLON– The City of Solon will be piggybacking on the Tuesday, Nov. 8, general election in order to fill two unexpired city council seats.
In August, the members of the city council voted to appoint Ron Herdliska on an interim basis to replace Dale Snipes, who resigned at the beginning of July.
Herdliska agreed to serve a portion of Snipes’ term, which extends through 2019, and council members approved placing the unexpired term on the November ballot.
