Walkin'

This past year I began cutting back on substitute teaching.
Subbing in the junior or senior high schools is easy enough: take attendance and play the video. Subbing in the elementary grades, however, can be as enjoyable as nicking yourself while shaving and then going for a swim in piranha-infested waters.


Robert Brown

Robert “Bob” Bernard Brown, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, in his home. Funeral Mass was held June 13 at Blessed John XXIII Catholic Church, with Father Dustin Vu presiding. Burial followed in Linwood Cemetery.
Bob was born July 20, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Bernard Charles and Ethel (Keegan) Brown. He married Dorothy Easterday on July 8, 1955, in Cedar Rapids. Bob worked for Rockwell Collins for many years until his retirement.


Eugene Brugman

Eugene “Gene” Henry Brugman, 91, passed away on June 10, 2011, while on vacation with his family in Minnesota.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice or to the Mercy Hospital Foundation (Iowa City). Funeral mass was held June 15 at St. Mary’s Church in Nichols with Rev. Walter Helms officiating. Mary Cooling

Mary Carolyn Cooling died Friday, June 3, 2011. An open-house visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on June 25 at Brosh Funeral Home in Solon. A lunch will be served in her honor from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Solon American Legion.


Robert Keys

Robert L. “Bob” Keys, 82, of Coralville, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, in his home due to complications from cancer.
Visitation and services were held June 18 at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville. Burial followed in Memory Gardens in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation in support of the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center.
A lifelong Hawkeye, Bob started his career at the University of Iowa at age 14 as a gardener, and retired as an Environmental Services Manager at 62.


Marilyn Marner

Marilyn H. Marner, 83, of Iowa City, died peacefully Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Mercy Hospice following a long illness.
Memorial Services celebrating Marilyn’s life were held June 21 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Barrie Tritle and Rev. John Raab. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, Iowa City Hospice or Mercy Hospital Foundation for Mercy Hospice.


Donna J. Zeithamel

Donna J. Zeithamel, 80, of North Liberty, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 18, of cancer.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, with Rev. Dr. Barrie Tritle officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Compassus Hospice.

I went to the College Football Hall of Fame about 10 years ago and thought it would be fun to check out the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
I’ve been planning the road trip to Canton, Ohio, for a few years and a couple of weeks ago finally pulled the trigger.
Two of my homeboys, Tim Nolte and Kirk Neustrom, loaded up my car with refreshments, reading material and tunes on Sunday, June 5, and hit the road. It was a 590-mile, nine-hour journey. It probably would have been eight hours except for the road construction in Illinois (not one of our favorite states).

Joette Meyer:<i> A beautiful send-off</i>

“Late in August, it’s going to hit me that I’m not going back,” Meyer said of retiring from the Solon Community School District in May after 37 years of teaching local kids.
Meyer, 60, spent all but one of her 38 years in education in the Solon district.
A native of the Solon/Iowa City area, she attended country school for a few years before she and a relative were moved to the Solon district by their respective parents.
