Solon trapshooting team aiming for the top

SOLON– It’s unusual for Solon to be in the role of the underdog.
But that sums up the year for the Solon High School Trapshooting Team.
In just two short years, the team has evolved from piggybacking with Iowa City West to emerging as a force to be reckoned with, all the while limited by a lack of available facilities and the hectic schedules of its team members.
After a slow start at the beginning of the season, the Solon shooters improved every week. And when the State competition in Cedar Falls was held June 3, Solon was the fifth best team in Iowa.


Dollars for Scholars takes healthy stake in higher education

SOLON– W.B. Yeats said, “Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.”
With a scholarship program that grants funds to any applicant graduating from Solon High School, the Solon Dollars for Scholars organization has been helping to light such fires for more than 18 years.
Sometimes, a scholarship can be just the spark a student needs to take the next step toward continuing his or her education. Other times, the funding can mean the difference between affording that education and putting it off indefinitely.


Solon Optimist Club Bike Rodeo set for June 18

SOLON– The Solon Optimist Club will hold a Summer Bike Rodeo on Saturday, June 18, at Solon Middle School. Sign up is at 8:30 a.m., and the competition begins at 9 a.m. Each age bracket from “Training Wheels” to 10-11 years old will have boys and girls divisions and trophies for first through third places and two overall championship trophies. Riders are asked to bring helmets and practice bicycle skills for contests in balance, steering and a paper toss.


Lady Spartan softball team fighting cancer

SOLON– Join the Lady Spartan softball team in their game to help strike out cancer.  The Strikeout Cancer game will be played against West Delaware on Monday, June 20, at 6 p.m. in Solon.
Honor a loved one with the purchase of a pink softball to place on the Wall of Hope. The team will also be selling “Strike Out Cancer” T-shirts.  If you would like to place your order early, contact Jody Turkal at 530-3262 or Tammy Walkner at 573-8389. All proceeds from this event will go to the American Cancer Society.


Sons of the Legion BBQ pork loin cookout June 18

SOLON– Solon Sons of the American Legion Spring BBQ Pork Loin Cookout will be held Saturday, June 18, serving from 5-7:30 p.m. Take-out will be available.
The menu includes tender BBQ pork loin (non-BBQ also available), au gratin potatoes, baked beans, breads, cake and ice cream, coffee, milk and lemonade.
The cost is $8 adults, kids ages 6-12 are $4, and children 5 and under are free.
Pork loins are from Ruzicka’s Meat Processing and Catering.


SpARTans exhibit opens at Shueyville gallery June 15

SOLON– Solon High School artists will be exhibiting over 30 pieces of artwork at the Shueyville Art Gallery this month.  The exhibit, entitled “SpARTans,” will run from June 15 through June 22.  There will be an opening reception on Wednesday, June 15, from 5-8 p.m. Select artwork will be available for purchase. The Shueyville Art Gallery is located at 1202 Curtis Bridge Rd. NE, Shueyville, IA 52338.  Hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11-5 p.m.


Library hours

The library is now open expanded hours for the summer.  Summer hours for the library are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.  The library is closed on Sundays and holidays.    Summer seems to be a busy time with extra patrons and programming taking place.  If you are a patron that enjoys quieter times at the library, avoid the middle days of the week and slip in on Mondays , Thursdays or Friday afternoon


Ready for a picnic ?

Look around outside the library and notice the two new picnic tables.  What a great place to take a break on a summer day.   The bike rack was moved to a new location closer to the front entry and one new table placed in the bike rack’s previous location.   This table is handicap accessible with three benches and an opening so a wheelchair can slide into the fourth spot.  The second table is located on the lower level near the entrance.  Thanks to the Landscaping Committee for purchasing these tables and thanks to city employees, Mark and Tim for assembling and installing them.

Stop by the library for a look at the quilt to be raffled off by the Solon Beef Days Committee.  The quilt, made by Marianne Klouda, is made from past Beef Days T-shirts.  It’s fun to look at and will take you down memory lane with a bit of Beef Days history. 


Summer Reading Program Week 2

“The Summer Reading Program is off to a great start,”’ reported Jen Leveck, Youth Services Librarian.  “We have already had a lot of kids coming in to pick up prizes and handed out a lot of T-shirts.”
