Harriett Jean Davis Tripp, 86, of Iowa City, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2011, at her daughter’s home in the presence of her children. In accord with her wishes, cremation and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Her body has been donated to the University of Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, Planned Parenthood, or the University of Iowa College of Nursing.

The last two years Iowa’s assistant basketball coach Kirk Speraw lived in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes were Big Ten co-champions (1978-79) and went to the Final Four (1979-80).
Kirk was a senior on the Big Ten championship team that went 20-8, 13-5 in the Big Ten. He was voted the most inspirational player on that squad.
Kirk was a graduate assistant on the Final Four team that was led by Ronnie Lester. The Hawks finished 23-8, 10-8 (fourth place) in the Big Ten.
Kirk is back as an assistant coach now after being head coach at Central Florida for the last 17 years.

FW KENT PARK— The area once known as McClellan’s Landing could be the site of multiple trailheads and year-round activities within the next 20-30 years, according to University of Iowa students Emily House, Eric Isaacs, Alicia Rosman and Erik Sampson. The foursome, master’s degree candidates in the School of Urban and Regional Planning, have been working closely with the Sutliff Bridge Authority (SBA) and the Johnson County Conservation Board in an effort to develop a sustainable, practical plan for the Sutliff Bridge and its surrounding area.

SOLON– Last fall, Chris Humrichouse got the seed of an idea stuck in her head.
She had read a newspaper article about several schools in Iowa City that had implemented garden projects in an effort to help provide fresh produce for their lunch programs and for others.
“I read this, and I thought, wouldn’t it be great to start a community garden?” she said.
During preparation for an evening meal at the Solon United Methodist Church (SUMC), where Humrichouse serves as Associate Pastor, she learned she wasn’t the only one who thought a community garden project would be great.

SOLON– The committee raising funds for the Solon Outdoor Events Center will kick-off a renewed effort Thursday, June 9, at Jo’s Roadhouse at 7 p.m. A short fundraising program presentation for the public will take place at 7:30 p.m. Giveaways and a silent auction of one item (a complete Solon Spartan football uniform with helmet, jersey and pants) will also be held. Former Solon and current Iowa football standout James Morris will speak, along with Solon Superintendent Sam Miller. Miller and project fundraiser Steve Duncan will speak about the importance of the project.
