Hawks in the year 1975

IOWA CITY– It’s time to take a break from covering the current Hawkeyes and flash back to the year 1975.
I was in my second year of being a student manager for the Hawkeye football team and Bob Commings was in his second year of being head coach.
Top assistants included offensive coordinator Howard Vernon, who became principal at City High, Bernie Wyatt, who also coached under Hayden Fry and helped Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl plus Dennis Green, who coached the Minnesota Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals in pro football.


Widening project narrows

NORTH LIBERTY– Planned upgrades to Highway 965 will move forward, but not at the pace expected, and probably without financial assistance.
Lack of federal earmark dollars, the defeat of the Local Option Sales Tax ballot measure and a denied grant application has eliminated much of the funding the City had hoped to use to kick off the $30 million, 7-phased project.

NORTH LIBERTY–You could say Dr. Luke Carlson of Johnson County Chiropractic got his start through a taste of what became his own medicine.
While attending the University of Iowa as a Physical Therapy student, Carlson experienced some pain, and thus visited a chiropractor.
“He got me fixed up, and I immediately thought, ‘That’s what I want to do,’” Carlson said.

NORTH LIBERTY — The North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NYLBS) league has taken a number of steps in recent years to increase the safety of all who attend the games. This season, the league has a new tool designed to prevent tragedy: a lightning detector designed to warn of an approaching storm.

Dorothy E. Haman, 88, of Iowa City died Friday, May 22, 2009 at Highland Ridge in Williamsburg following an extended illness.
Funeral Mass was celebrated May 26 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove. Visitation was May 25 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, and before the funeral at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Church or St. Peter’s Cemetery.


Louis Richard Kral

Louis Richard Kral, 80 of Solon, died Friday, May 22, 2009 at his home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church where there will be a Catholic Order of Foresters rosary at 5 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.


Henry George Kruzic

Henry George Kruzic, 85, of Solon, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at his home from congestive heart failure. A Memorial Mass was held Monday, June 1, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Inurnment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation was held May 31, at Brosh Chapel in Solon.


Elaine Delores Aamodt Malott

Elaine Delores Aamodt Malott, 79, of North Liberty, died May 21, 2009, in the Mercy Hospital Hospice Unit, Iowa City, from complications due to Parkinson’s disease. Per Elaine’s wishes, her body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Old Brick in Iowa City.
