Food for Thought

The other day I threw away an empty oatmeal box. I’ve done that a lot in the past 50 or so years, but for some reason this time I hesitated. There ought to be uses for such sturdy and relatively clean containers, aside from adding to the trash we Americans pile up in ever-growing mountains. It’s a nice, round box and it has a tightly-fitting plastic lid, better than the ragged cardboard lids of oatmeal boxes of the past.


Hawkeye wrestlers: Big Ten Champs

IOWA CITY– For the second year in a row, the Hawkeye wrestling team won the Big Ten tournament championship at University Park, Pennsylvania.
One hundred and forty-one points, two champions and nine will go to the NCAA championships in two weeks.
I’ll look at the good, the bad and the ugly of Iowa’s 33rd Big Ten title.
The good or great would have to be Brent Metcalf. Three pins, including one in the championship match, a major decision, being voted the Outstanding Wrestler for the second straight year, 33-0 for the year, 65 straight victories… and he’s only a junior.


Iowa Women finish 21-10

IOWA CITY– The Hawkeyes won their first game, 79-64, over Minnesota in the Big Ten tournament with balanced scoring, winning the rebound battle 40-31, and taking care of the ball with only 11 turnovers.
“There’s no superstars on this team,” said Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. “They’re all great players. They get along as you can tell on the floor. They really pass the ball and are genially happy about each other's success.”
I’m not sure if I agree with the coach.
Iowa has three super seniors that have led the way all season and they did just that with their 21st win of the season.


UI Men Split Last Home Games

IOWA CITY– After losing a heartbreaker 60-58 to Ohio State last week, the Hawkeyes won a 75-67 double-overtime heartwarmer last Saturday over Penn State.
One could only wonder how much better Iowa would have been if Cyrus Tate wouldn’t have gotten hurt.
Big Cy went down January 8 against Minnesota with Iowa leading by 13 points. The Gophers came back and beat the Hawks, 52-49.
With Cy out, Iowa was 2-7, since he’s been back they are 2-5 but Jeff Peterson has missed the last six games.


Gary Lynn Bell

Gary Lynn Bell, 53, of Marion, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at his home from a heart attack. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, March 4, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marion by the Rev. Gregory Williamson and Pastoral Assistant Donald Loesch. Visitation was held Tuesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion and one hour before the service at the church. Burial was in Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.


Lola Harriet Borseth

Lola Harriet Borseth, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon. Services were held Saturday, March 7, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed in the Shueyville Cemetery. Visitation was Friday at Brosh Chapel.
Lola was born July 30, 1924, in Burr Oak, the daughter of Clifford and Ida (Ellingson Moore) Quandahl. She married Mahlon Borseth on Dec. 12, 1939, in Decorah. Lola enjoyed playing bingo and cards, gardening, fishing and spending time with her family, especially her grandkids.


Wanda Marie Stoneking Burrack

Wanda Marie Stoneking Burrack, 60, of Cedar Rapids, lost her long battle with Wegeners and short battle with cancer Sunday morning, March 1, 2009. Visitation was Wednesday, March 4 at Morgan Funeral Home, Mount Vernon. No funeral service will be held.


Bonnie Lee Dean

Bonnie Lee Dean, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 7, at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Chapel in New Hampton with monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating. Burial was in New Hampton Cemetery. Visitation was Saturday at the funeral home.
Survivors include her children, Lon Ladwig of Sarasota, Fla., Randi Schulz of Ankeny and Scott Ladwig of Ely; and a brother, Robert Leichtman of Baltimore, Md.


Nancy Ann Rudd

Nancy Ann Rudd, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, in Mercy Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Services were held on Thursday, March 5, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Harlan Gillespie of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church officiated. There was a private entombment in Cedar Park Cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and Thursday at the chapel.


Leona A. Russell

Leona A. Russell, 95, of Iowa City, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family, and under the loving and compassionate care of Iowa City Hospice and Dr. Michael Burns.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation was held Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Leona’s memory.
