Food For Thought

Somewhere, somehow, someone created the myth that women love bad boys. ‘Bad’ as in ‘evil,’ not as in the inexplicable contradiction meaning ‘good.’ That idea, that every tough guy has a soft spot and it only takes the right woman to tame him, has been popular since the first day some girl defied her father’s warning to stay away from some boy he considered trouble. It was going on long before Margaret Mitchell told us that Scarlet fell for Rhett because he treated her badly. Maybe those young cave women really did enjoy being hauled around by their hair, as the cartoons would have us believe.

Walkin'

A radio can be a lifesaver on long bicycle rides, especially like the day trip I detailed in last week’s column. The unit is fairly large because my hearing isn’t what it used to be and I need the decibels. The radio is in a pack attached to my front handlebars, so I can turn it on and change channels on the fly.

Here’s the beef

IOWA CITY– When Johnson County Supervisor Pat Harney sat in on a local forum about hunger, he learned about food shortages at local food banks and came up with an idea to beef up support to those in need.
Along with his wife Jean, Harney rounded up the assistance of 20 donors from all over the county to help in a significant way. Harney and company bought a two-year-old heifer raised by Clear Creek Amana graduate Stephanie Fisher. Fisher’s cow was a reserve champion at the county fair; weighing in at 1,045 pounds. It sold for $1,200.
