The Black Amgel:portent of doom, subject of movie

IOWA CITY– She reigns silently over a set of graves in the midst of an Iowa City cemetery. She is both alluring and formidable, dreaded and loved, world-renowned and yet forever shrouded in dark mystery.
The Black Angel of Iowa City’s Oakland Cemetery is now the subject of an artistic collaboration between past Solon High School graduates Travis Drahozal and Jordan Kessler.
Like Iowa City’s notable urban legend, the pair’s “Black Angel Movie” is also a study in contrasts. Part documentary and part horror movie, Drahozal said the Black Angel was a perfect subject for this latest venture.

Another building fills up

OXFORD– The space crunch in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district is now squeezing Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford.
At their regular meeting on Oct. 17, the CCA board of directors approved invoking the district’s insufficient space policy for the aging building.

Wentzien posthumously honored by ICCSD

IOWA CITY– Area students can thank the pioneering work of Iowa City Community School District employee H. Troy Wentzien, who led the way in bringing school technology to the head of the class in Iowa and the U.S.
Starting in 1993, Wentzien built ICCSD’s system-wide network, even updating to fiber optic lines, in a process that continues today as nearly all ICCSD schools are lined with fiber optic networks.

UIHC opens new clinic in former brownfield

CORALVILLE– Opening a 167,000 square foot medical clinic in Coralville, University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics (UIHC) has placed a major foothold in the redevelopment site of a brownfield which once housed an open-air coal storage site, railroad storage and transfer sites, a former municipal dump, an asphalt factory, and multiple fuel storage tanks.

CCA will host annual financial aid night Thursday, Nov. 8

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School will host its annual financial aid night on Thursday, Nov. 8, in the high school commons at 7 p.m. A guest presenter from the Iowa College Access Network will discuss the FAFSA, Federal Student Loan programs, and scholarship searches.
High school counselor Mark Hovey will discuss local scholarships and deadlines. This is an important meeting for junior and senior parents, but is open to anyone wishing to learn more about funding their child’s education.

CCA sells fine fruit for the fine arts

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) fine arts boosters group, F.A.M.E., is promoting its annual fruit, cheese, meat and nut sale going on from now until Nov. 6. Fruit will be delivered on Dec. 8. Swisher Auxiliary to host turkey supper Saturday, Nov. 3 at Legion

SWISHER– The Swisher Auxiliary will host a Homemade Turkey Supper Saturday, Nov. 3, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Swisher American Legion.
The public is invited. The cost of $9 for adults, and $5 for children ages 6-12. Children age 5 and under eat free.
Turkey Bingo by Swisher Junior Auxiliary will run from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Proceeds will be donated to English Rivers Outfitters to help veterans.

Van Allen school to host Think First injury prevention program Nov. 7

NORTH LIBERTY– Van Allen Elementary will host a ThinkFirst for Kids injury prevention program for students on Nov. 7 at 12:45 and 1:45 p.m. at 170 Abigail Ave. in North Liberty.
Each year, about 600 Iowans become paralyzed from a spinal cord injury. Another 5,000 will suffer traumatic brain injuries. Young Iowans are at high-risk for these devastating injuries, many of which are preventable.

Benefit for Jim ‘Catfish’ Becicka of Oxford to be held Nov. 10

OXFORD– Jim “Catfish” Becicka has been battling cancer for the past 18 months. A benefit for him will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at St. Mary’s Auditorium in Oxford. The event will begin with a meal (free will offering), serving from 4:30 until 8:30 p.m., followed by a live auction at 7 p.m. Also included will be a raffle drawing for various items, gift cards and certificates.
