Creek Boys’ season ends in Fairfield

Mount Pleasant capsizes CCA, 8-3, in District 10 baseball

FAIRFIELD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball season came to an end Friday, July 19, in Fairfield, as the Clippers fell, 8-3, to the Mount Pleasant Panthers in a Class 3A Substate 5 District 10 quarterfinal game.
Three scoreless innings preceded the Creek Boys plating two runners in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Panthers scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth; leading to a hole the Clippers couldn’t dig themselves out from. One CCA run scored in the sixth but a scoreless seventh inning sealed their doom.

Liberty holds off late attack from CR Wash for 8-7 substate win in nine innings

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Liberty High varsity baseball team overcame the first hurdle on the road to Des Moines, and the 2019 Class 4A State Baseball Tournament, on Friday, July 19, outlasting Cedar Rapids Washington, 8-7, in nine innings at home, Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, in a substate first round game.
The Bolts swept the Warriors, 15-10 and 5-2, both in eight-innings, a week before at Washington High and entered substate competition as the No.2 seeded team in Substate 7 behind top-seeded West Des Moines Dowling Catholic.

Spartans close out regular season with losses

Solon falls on the road to City High, Fairfield

FAIRFIELD– Two quality opponents handed Solon’s varsity baseball team a pair of losses to end the regular season.
The Spartans took to the road for back-to-back games against City High and Fairfield July 15 and 16, and came home on the wrong end of 7-2 and 14-4 scores.
“We couldn't get anything going against City High... just played flat,” reported Solon Head Coach Keith McSweeney.
Starting pitcher Ryan Geistkemper kept the Spartans in the game against City High July 15 in Iowa City.

Solon boys romp over Pella, 13-0

Spartans advance to face Oskaloosa on the road

OSKALOOSA– Solon’s Cam Miller struck out eight and walked one against Pella.
The opposing team’s five pitchers combined for eight walks and two strikeouts.
The Spartan varsity baseball team cruised past the Dutch 13-0 in a Class 3A Substate 6 semifinal July 19 in Oskaloosa.
“Cam pitched really well, and had all of his pitches working,” Solon Head Coach Keith McSweeney said. “When they did square him up our outfielders tracked it down.”
McSweeney said the biggest play of the game probably occurred in the third inning when Solon was already up 4-0.

Oak Hill Elementary School Cornerstone Ceremony

TIFFIN– The Masonic cornerstone ceremony is a time-honored tradition, taking place for hundreds of years in the United States of America. President George Washington, a Freemason, dedicated the United States Capitol Building during a cornerstone ceremony in 1793.
Canopy Lodge No. 290, of Oxford, has served the communities of Oxford, Tiffin and the surrounding area continuously since its formation in 1870. The Grand Lodge of Iowa was founded in 1844 and is celebrating 175 years of Masonry in Iowa this year.

Solon man fractured lower jaw, bottom teeth of female, charges allege

SOLON– A Solon man fractured the lower jaw and bottom teeth of a female victim on July 15, according to allegations filed by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Derek Adam Westen, of 402 South Market Street, was charged with assault causing serious injury, a Class D felony, and domestic abuse assault second offense, an aggravated misdemeanor).

Council upgrades tower lease

T-Mobile to pay $1,500 a month

SOLON– T-Mobile’s antenna is staying on top of the city’s water tower.
City council members approved a five-year lease for the mobile carrier at a July 3 meeting.
T-Mobile will pay the city $1,500 a month, over the next five years, to rent a 15-by-20-foot area on the elevated tower.
Although the initial term is five years, the lease includes three automatic five-year renewals, with the rent increasing by 10 percent each term. After 20 years, an automatic extension kicks in for up to nine one-year periods, each with a one percent hike.

Bolts split with Golden Eagles in delayed doubleheader

Liberty softball gets 5-2 win over Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, then falls 6-0

CEDAR RAPIDS– Liberty High’s varsity softball team split with Dubuque Wahlert Catholic in a doubleheader, which took four days to complete due to weather issues.
The squads met on Mount Mercy University’s (MMU) diamond in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, July 2, where the Lightning picked up a 5-2 win before real lightning and rain postponed the nightcap until Saturday, July 6 (also at MMU). The Bolts fell 6-0 in the second game.

CCA defeats South Tama, 10-0 and 15-3

OXFORD– Senior Night for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity softball team was made sweeter as the Clippers swept the South Tama Trojans, 10-0 and 15-3, to improve to an 11-19 showing for the season.

Mustangs take two from the Bolts

Liberty baseball falls, 7-6 and 7-2, to Dubuque Hempstead

CEDAR RAPIDS– Liberty High dipped to 15-13 for the season in the wake of a varsity doubleheader sweep Monday, July 1, to the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs, at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids.
The double dip was originally scheduled to be played in Dubuque, but field conditions prompted the move to the Lightning’s home away from home (the baseball diamond awaits completion on the Liberty High campus), with the Bolts in the role as the visiting team.
