IOWA CITY– While the Women of Troy were battling to go to the state softball tournament Tuesday night, Charlie Stumpff’s Trojans were taking care of business in the next-to-last regular season game against the Bettendorf Bulldogs.
West had a 3-0 lead after four innings with one run in the bottom of the first and two in the third. The Bulldogs put up a run in the top of the fifth, but the Trojans added two more in the bottom of the inning. Bettendorf had three un-answered runs in the sixth but they weren’t enough and the Trojans took the 5-4 win.

Food For Thought

Remember those vinegar and baking soda volcanoes, and the membrane from inside an egg shell that allowed ink to pass through one way while keeping the water from passing through the other way? Those, and a few other more dramatic demonstrations were meant to convince us that science was cool. Well, it is, and I have continued conducting experiments well into my adult years. Most of them have had to do with eggs, vinegar, or both. Not all of them produced the expected results, some of them were done to entertain my children and grandchildren.

Walkin'

I write this from a picnic table in the shade in Santa Fe, N.M., along a dry creek bed just a few hundred yards from this city’s central plaza. We are in the middle of a journey that started with a stop in Denver about a week ago for a visit with Sabra’s parents.
