Horn quartet in concert at F.W. Kent Park July 17

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Conservation Department is excited to announce another free outdoor concert coming up on July 17 at F.W. Kent Park.
Tuesday, July 17, the Bon Vivant Horn Quartet will kick-off the week with a concert at the Youth Group Camp at F.W. Kent Park at 7 p.m. Bon Vivant is made up of local professional French Horn players. They will play a selection of chamber quartet music arranged for French Horns.

IC Regina celebrates Hot Summer Nights with free public events July 12, Aug. 9

IOWA CITY– Spend an evening at Iowa City Regina with the new Hot Summer Nights series; it’s sure to be a cool treat.
In an effort designed as a thank you and to acknowledge the community for its continuous support and dedication, the school is hosting two evenings filled with great food and talented bands. These are free public events that provide a safe and family atmosphere and also offer something different to do on Thursday nights this summer.

Donate to NL pantry during its Thanksgiving in July drive

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry (NLCP) invites local businesses to participate in Thanksgiving in July.
The last two years, local financial institutions held food drives and competed for a traveling turkey trophy, awarded in 2011 to Hills Bank & Trust for amassing the most contributions. In total, the North Liberty Community Pantry received the equivalent of more than 10,000 pounds of food in July 2011.

Swisher to hold farmers’ market at Fun Days

SWISHER– A special farmers’ market and vendor fair will be held in downtown Swisher Saturday, Aug. 4, during Swisher Fun Days.

Landscape project decorates North Central Junior High entrance

NORTH LIBERTY– Completed in 2006, North Central Junior High is getting a makeover thanks to numerous public and private partnerships.
Launched during its inaugural year by the school’s Parent Student Teacher Organization (PSTO), the school’s landscape got a big boost when McKenzie Wierda elected to take it on as an Eagle Scout project in 2011. He recruited nearly 50 scouts, school and church friends and their family members to help on consecutive Saturdays in May and June to make the improvements.

Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans survived the heat and rival City High in a two-night battle for citywide bragging rights.

Women of Troy one step closer to Fort Dodge, state

IOWA CITY– A lesser pitcher may have crumbled, a lesser team may have folded. For Jeff Kelley’s West High Women of Troy, Saturday night’s Class 5A regional semifinal against the Lady Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead may have been just a little bump on the road to the state tournament in Fort Dodge.
An excessive heat warning expired as the game began, yet conditions were still stifling for the 4-1 West win.

Solon sinks CCA 13-3, 7-0

TIFFIN– The impending threat of a severe thunderstorm packing dangerously high winds postponed Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) double-dip with Solon on Friday, June 29. Instead, the teams met for a lunchtime battle on Tuesday, July 3.

Senior night sweep for West v. Cedar Falls, 7-2, 11-3

IOWA CITY– West High paid tribute to 10 seniors Friday night and in return were treated to 18 Trojan runs and a pair of wins in a varsity doubleheader.
Tom Harder, Andy Jones, Jacob Schmitt, Jay Slocum, Andy Topping, Nick Grimsman, Kellen Yoder, Ryan Aller, Luke Crimmins and Ryan Siems were honored between the games against the visiting Tigers of Cedar Falls.

Community Foundation online grant applications open, due September 14

IOWA CITY– The Community Foundation of Johnson County (CFJC) has opened its online grant applications process for the 2013 fiscal year.
 Grants may be submitted for programming or capital projects in five focus categories: arts, culture and humanities; education; health / human services; environment / animals; and public / societal benefit. The grant application deadline is Friday, Sept. 14, at 5 p.m.
Nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organizations can apply for grants by visiting the Community Foundation’s website at www.communityfoundationofjohnsoncounty.org and click on Grants from the Endowment.
