it’s a Thriller

Wow.
Now, that was a finish.
It was down to the wire for the Solon Spartans Friday night in a 27-17 win over Maquoketa, a game much closer than the score would indicate.
Having taken the lead early in the fourth quarter, Solon was backed up deep in its own territory and forced to punt nursing a 21-17 margin. The Maquoketa Cardinals had the ball just on Solon’s side of midfield with about six minutes left in the game.
A touchdown, and only a touchdown, would give the Cardinals the game.

XC girls run away with WaMaC title

DEWITT– Following their season-long recipe for success, ‘Benzing wins, with the rest packed close behind,’ Solon’s girls outran the rest of the WaMaC for the 2012 Conference title Oct. 11 at DeWitt. Their sights are now trained on Oct. 18, the state-qualifying meet in Anamosa.

Paisley, McGill pace Spartans at conference run

DEWITT– Keegan Paisley and Patrick McGill led the way to a first division finish for Solon, at the Oct. 11 WaMaC meet in DeWitt.
Vinton-Shellsburg stayed just out of reach of Mount Vernon-Lisbon to take the boys’ team title 87 to 95. Marion (110) stayed close, too. Following them were Center Point-Urbana (131), Western Dubuque (154), Benton (171) and Waterloo Columbus (176).

Soup supper a warm tradition for Ely Presbyterian Church

ELY– It’s been a comforting tradition for 62 years.
The First Presbyterian Church near Ely is hosting its 63rd annual Chicken Soup and Kolach supper on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 4 until 7 p.m., and while the years have brought some changes to the fundraising event, much remains the same.
And the hundreds who attend like it that way.
Church secretary and soup supper volunteer Misti Huedepohl said there are repeat customers who come every year, but as time goes on, new generations of soup lovers come to make it their own tradition as well.

victorious

MOUNT VERNON– Solon is the conference champion.
The Lady Spartans went 6-0 through the WaMaC volleyball tournament over the course of two days last week, pulling out a 2-1 win over Maquoketa for the tournament title.
Solon’s varsity volleyball team ripped through Benton Community (21-13, 21-10) and Center Point-Urbana (21-8, 21-9) before a sterner test against West Delaware (25-23, 21-15) in pool play hosted by Center Point Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Bracket play began in Mount Vernon Thursday, with stiffer challenges ahead for the Lady Spartans.

Paving the way to a better Tiffin

TIFFIN– The decision to pave Jasper Avenue is not yet set in concrete.
One Tiffin City Council member asked to defer the decision until the three-member body had one more opportunity to determine where the project fits into the city’s capital improvements list.
