Setting a new standard on grades

SOLON– Teacher A is recording tests and assignments in his grade book. Teacher B is using a new system of standards-based grades in hers.
It’s all part of the process of moving Solon schools in line with an Iowa Department of Education initiative on assessment for learning, one of five characteristics the state has identified for providing effective instruction to Iowa students.

Horses jumping at the chance to train at Leamanach

SOLON– The pieces keep falling into place for Lisa Marie Andrews, an equestrian rider since she was 12. Andrews moved to Solon because of a horse named Graphite.
Graphite is the half-brother of Andrews’ former steed, Beetle Bailey, with whom she captured several awards including the 2007 Intermediate Horse of the Year.
She’s taken over Kevin O’Brien’s Oak Meadows Farm and revamped the stables, arena and pastures while setting up shop as Leamanach Stable in Solon.

Next early out is a movie

The next early out program will be on Thursday, Oct. 4, with the showing of the movie, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (PG) which is 98 minutes long. Movie time will be from 1 until 3 p.m.
Movies are shown in the meeting room and most attendees prefer to sit on the floor. The library does have a few bean bag chairs but not enough for everyone. Kids are more than welcome to bring in pillows or comfy seat-like things of their own for early out movies.

Running away

ANAMOSA– It was all Solon.
The Solon varsity football team’s offense scored 49 points in the first half and the defense held the Anamosa Raiders scoreless in a 56-0 win Friday night.
The only statistic that was close was the number of plays run– 47 for Anamosa, 46 for Solon.
The rest was the Spartans’ first defensive shut-out of the season, and a runaway win against a winless team.
Solon rolled up 424 yards of total offense, 235 on the ground and 189 through the air. Seven different Spartans scored touchdowns, three passing, five rushing.

Lady Spartans sweep Anamosa, host West Delaware Thursday

ANAMOSA– Solon’s Lady Spartans did what they were supposed to do.
The varsity volleyball squad had a single match and no tournaments scheduled last week, traveling only to Anamosa for a 3-0 conference win.
Solon defeated Anamosa 25-12, 25-7, 25-12 to move to 17-3 on the season.
“Jordan Runge swung really well, and our serving game took them out of the match from the start,” reported head coach Peter Gustin.

Cross Country girls take title at Williamsburg invitational

WILLIAMSBURG– The scoring was as easy as one-two-three at the Sept. 25 Williamsburg cross country invitational. Spartan black came across first, second and third in the girls’ 4-kilometer race. With the rest of the varsity crowded into the top 12, Solon ran away with the team title.
Lauren Benzing was first across (15:22) the finish line. Alex Smith, who has pushed into the top three or four in most meets this season, took it up a notch, grabbing meet runner-up honors (15:59) with Mallory Carr (16:10) a few strides behind in third.

All Solon community members are invited to participate.
