Storytime happenings

April 19 will be the last day that Miss Jennifer visits the daycares in town. Twice a month during the school year, she goes to visit the kids at Play and Learn and All Aboard to do a Storytime. “I love to go and visit the daycares. It is one of the best parts of my job,” comments Jen. “During the summer, the kids from both daycares get to walk down to the library for Storytime, which is also really fun.”

‘Win with Reading’ month

April is “Win with Reading” month at Solon schools. The Solon Public Library librarians are taking part this year. Kris Brown, library director, went to Lakeview Elementary and read to the second graders. “It was great fun,” Brown stated enthusiastically. Jen Leveck, youth services librarian, will be going to the middle school to do some book talks.

Outside the windows

Springtime brings thoughts of the landscaping committee to mind as the grounds begin to awaken from the winter with spring flowers and blooming shrubs. The picnic tables, installed last summer, once again become a gathering spot on warm sunny days for the after school set. From the inside, looking out, one will notice that the birds are gathering at the feeders as the staff attempts to keep them filled. On the inside, there are some new plants in colorful pots, also courtesy of the landscaping ommittee.

New kids’ books

Some of the most used and most loved books in the library are in the children’s section and are called the “Look and Find” series. These books, designed to be touched, are for the very young through kindergarten so they do get some rigorous handling. The library is in the process of replacing the old, much loved, torn and tattered volumes. Eventually there will be 16 new and replaced titles on the shelves. To date, the following new books are available for check-out.

Movie Clips

District nutrition program operating at $100k deficit

SOLON– The school nutrition program, while being heralded for its success in bringing fresh produce and a daily salad bar to the schools, fell in a $116,000 hole this year.
The kitchen budget shortfall was inflated by the purchase of new kitchen equipment and fix-ups that ran about $50,000, according to Kelly Crossley, Solon’s nutrition program director. After federal reimbursements, a school’s kitchen should be self-sustaining and essentially pay for itself, she said.
