Cougars, bobcats make comeback<br>........ Can bats?

SUGAR BOTTOM– White nose syndrome is the scourge of bat colonies worldwide. The disease was first tracked out of a cave in Europe, where larger bat species have been able to resist its effects and survive winters.
In Iowa and the US, micro-bats swarm the night air, vacuuming up and devouring their weight in insects each night.
But with a lower body weight, micro-bats have a harder time fighting off the fungal infections from white nose syndrome.

Complaint against coach dismissed after investigation

SOLON– Allegations of verbal abuse by the Solon High School varsity volleyball coach were deemed unfounded after an investigation into a complaint by a former player.
At the July 9 school board meeting, Lori McKinnie said her daughter received undue and inappropriate comments from Coach Kurt Trout during her two seasons playing for Solon in ninth and 10th grade.
The student, now graduated, chose not to go out for volleyball her last two years at Solon High.
The family filed a written formal complaint to superintendent Sam Miller and the school board.

Middle school girls break track records during 2012 season

SOLON– Two school records and a season of first and second place finishes marked the 2012 season for Solon’s eighth grade girls track team. Solon’s seventh graders nearly matched those team finishes– and have their sights set on middle school records in 2013.

District to begin selling parking spaces at new stadium

SOLON– Beginning Aug. 6, the Solon Community School District will be selling preferred parking spaces for Friday night and postseason football games. The new stadium will include a parking lot directly behind the home side bleachers that will have 41 parking spaces. The Solon Board of Education has approved a plan to reserve 12 of these spaces for handicapped parking (double the six handicapped spaces required) and these will be available on a first come-first serve basis at each home football game for those cars with the appropriate handicapped plate or hanging mirror permit.

Recommendations for tree watering during drought conditions

DES MOINES– As drought conditions continue, Iowans are concerned about the amount of water their yard trees need. Drought conditions can lead to tree decline, pest problems and, in extreme cases, tree mortality. Supplemental watering for mature trees will help maintain tree health during drought.
The best way to provide supplemental water to trees during a drought is manually. A bucket to measure how many gallons is best, but a garden hose, moved often, can provide a good soil soaking. Sprinklers are less efficient.

Disappearing ink

NORTH LIBERTY– Although this newspaper has a website with recent articles archived, you’re probably reading this on paper. You’re probably still reading your books by turning physical pages made of paper, hardcover or paperback, bought or borrowed, fiction or non-fiction.
