Dog/cat first-aid class August 3

IOWA CITY – The American Red Cross is known for helping to keep Eastern Iowans and their families healthy and safe. We all know dogs and cats are more than pets—they’re family. And just like any other member of the family, pets deserve to be cared for and protected.
That’s why the American Red Cross has developed Pet First Aid for Cats and Dogs.
The next class is Monday, Aug. 3 from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. at the Iowa City Red Cross office, 373 E. College St, Iowa City. Register by calling (319) 393-3500.

Time to talk football

IOWA CITY– Media day for Iowa football is coming up on Friday, Aug. 7 so it’s time to talk Iowa Hawkeye football.
In the next two weeks I’ll take a look at Iowa’s schedule and try to figure out who will be favored.
This week I’ll look at the first six games including home games with UNI, Arizona, Arkansas State and Michigan. Iowa State and Penn State are on the road.

Sept. 5, Northern Iowa: This game might be a little closer than the Hawks want, although Iowa should win.
Panther head coach Mark Farley and his staff do a great job of finding players that fit into his system.

NL police officer injured during car chase

NORTH LIBERTY– A North Liberty police officer was injured during a car chase in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 25.
Around 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, North Liberty police officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Lance Robinson, 38, of North Liberty. Robinson refused to stop for the officers and a pursuit ensued. The pursued vehicle traveled south to Commerce Drive in Coralville and returned to North Liberty via Highway 965. The subject was stopped in the area of Hawkeye Drive and Highway 965.

Highway 965 (JW60) closed for paving improvements

JOHNSON COUNTY– Highway 965 (JW60) is closed to through traffic beginning Monday, July 20.
The Johnson County Secondary Roads Department issued a notice that the roadway has been closed in order to make paving improvements to approximately 2.8 miles of Highway 965 from just North of the Iowa River to 120th Street.
A detour route is marked for through-traffic. Through traffic will be detoured to Interstate 380 from 120th Street (the Swisher-Shueyville exit) to Penn Street in North Liberty

North Liberty man arrested for his role in Iowa City bank robbery

IOWA CITY– Iowa City Police have made the first arrest in regards to the robbery of American Bank and Trust, 551 Westbury Dr.

MidAmerica Hobbies owner seeks deed from city

NORTH LIBERTY– The owner of a local hobby store, claiming to have unfinished business with the city, aired his frustrations in a public meeting July 14.
Bill Kiesel, owner of MidAmerica Hobbies in North Liberty, approached the North Liberty City Council to recount a 2006 agreement between the City, an agreement that Kiesel said includes a transaction that has yet to occur.

Making progress: CCA schools taken off “watch list”

OXFORD — Clear Creek Amana (CCA) monthly school board meetings open with good news, typically a brief report on a fine arts program, athletic, or academic accomplishment. For the July meeting, District Superintendent Dr. Paula Vincent delivered some much anticipated good news on the academic front: none of the CCA schools are currently on the U.S. Department of Education’s watch list for troubled schools.

Francis R. \Frank\ Dunn

Francis R. \Frank\ Dunn, 81, of Platteville, Wis., passed on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Southwest Health Center Hospital, Platteville. Funeral services were held Sunday, July 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Platteville. The Rev. Edmond Dunn and Monsignor Charles Schluter officiated. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Platteville.
Memorials may be made to the Francis R. Dunn Memorial Fund. 



Carol Ann Huberty

Carol Ann Huberty, 72, of Dyersville, died Monday, July 13, 2009, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque from complications of diabetes.
Funeral services were held Friday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial at the church cemetery. Rev. Phil Kruse officiated.
Carol was born May 22, 1937, in Petersburg, the daughter of Clem and Thecia (Gerken) Bruggeman. She married Thomas R. Huberty on July 9, 1955 in Dyersville. Carol retired in 1989 as a supervisor at Modernfold in Dyersville.
