Spartans keep clawing back from behind

SOLON– When the Solon boys score more than 50 points, they usually win.
The Spartans continued to search for consistent offense last week, losing at home to Dyersville Beckman and winning on the road at Anamosa.
In both games, Solon found itself scrapping back from an early deficit to take the lead. Against Beckman, they just couldn’t hold it.
“Beckman was a very physical game,” noted Head Coach Brad Randall. “It’s almost a little bit of a shock to your system when you play them.”

Girls find offense against Anamosa

SOLON– For three quarters against Dyersville Beckman, the Lady Spartans couldn’t buy a bucket.
Against Anamosa, they were coming cheap.
Solon’s girls found their offense against Anamosa Friday night at home, posting a 59-27 win that was just what the doctor ordered after a 28-27 loss Tuesday at Dyersville Beckman.
Ten different Lady Spartans scored and 11 recorded rebounds in the blowout win.
“I was very pleased,” said Head Coach Mark Sovers. “It was by far our best effort over four quarters.
“I’ve got to give them credit for coming back after a tough loss,” he said of his team.

Goose island

Canada geese have been lounging around the edge of the retention pond in front of the South Slope Telecommunications building in North Liberty recently. Hundreds of geese have been making a stop on the pond and its surrounding walking path, in no hurry to make it to their southern destination because Iowa’s winter has been so mild thus far.

Some Iowa taxpayers in a tiff over TIF law

CORALVILLE– Peter Fisher of the Iowa Policy Project was surprised by the number of local residents willing to sit through two hours of discussion on something as mundane as property taxes.
“I thought there would be a few really wonky types like me,” Fisher told the standing-room-only audience that gathered at the Coralville Public Library Jan. 4 to hear a presentation and panel discussion on Tax Increment Financing (TIF).
