Bonnie Lee Dean

Bonnie Lee Dean, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 7, at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Chapel in New Hampton with monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating. Burial was in New Hampton Cemetery. Visitation was Saturday at the funeral home.
Survivors include her children, Lon Ladwig of Sarasota, Fla., Randi Schulz of Ankeny and Scott Ladwig of Ely; and a brother, Robert Leichtman of Baltimore, Md.

Nancy Ann Rudd

Nancy Ann Rudd, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, in Mercy Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Services were held on Thursday, March 5, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Harlan Gillespie of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church officiated. There was a private entombment in Cedar Park Cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and Thursday at the chapel.

Leona A. Russell

Leona A. Russell, 95, of Iowa City, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family, and under the loving and compassionate care of Iowa City Hospice and Dr. Michael Burns.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation was held Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Leona’s memory. Douglas J. Steckly

Douglas J. Steckly, 52, a longtime Johnson County farmer, died Friday March 6, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics of complications from a sudden illness.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Cosgrove with Deacon David Montgomery officiating. Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

City seeks applicants for the Telecommunication Commission

NORTH LIBERTY— There is currently one opening on the Telecommunications Commission to fill a partial term ending in June 2010. Meetings are typically held on the first Monday of the month. Not only can you have input on the redesign of the City Web site, but you will also promote local cable access and enhance public relations and communication efforts throughout the area.

Safe! And not just at home plate

NORTH LIBERTY — The North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NYLBS) league has taken a number of steps in recent years to increase the safety of all who attend the games. This season, the league has a new tool designed to prevent tragedy: a lightning detector designed to warn of an approaching storm.

Republican party spaghetti dinner set for Friday, March 6

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Republicans are hosting their annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Friday, March 6 at Montgomery Hall, Johnson County Fairgrounds. Dinner will be served between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. A program featuring speakers Rep. Jeff Kaufmann and RPI Chair Matt Strawn will begin shortly after. Tickets are available at the door, $10 per person, $25 for a family of four, and college students $8. The event will be catered by Zio Johno's. Optimists hold Pancake Breakfast Saturday, March 7

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Optimists will host a Pancake Breakfast Saturday, Mar. 7, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m at the North Liberty Community Center. Tickets are $6, and $2 for children under 10. All proceeds go to the youth of the North Liberty community.

CCA students vs. faculty volleyball match Fri., March 6

TIFFIN─ There will be a volleyball game Friday, March 6 featuring Clear Creek Amana senior students vs. faculty at Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin. Preceding the game a spaghetti supper from Zio Johno’s will be served, with meat or non-meat spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and drink included. The game starts at 7 p.m. with $5 adult and $3 student admission. The spaghetti supper runs from 5-7:30 p.m. and costs $7 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. All proceeds will go to purchase technology equipment for all five Clear Creek Amana schools.
