Solon High School basketball All-Star event Sunday, June 12

SOLON– Former college, semi-pro and pro basketball players will converge on the Solon High School gymnasium Sunday, June 12, at 7 p.m. for an All-Star scrimmage to benefit the boys’ basketball team.
Solon varsity head coach Jason Pershing hopes the event will raise funds for his program while providing entertainment for the community.
“The All-Star game brings high-level athletes that our community used to watch on TV into our gymnasium,” Pershing said.

Fire in his blood

After 24 years, Ely’s Zbanek trades chief’s helmet for firefighter’s

ELY– As a kid growing up in Ely, Randy Zbanek was a constant presence at the fire station.
“I was born and raised around it. My dad was on forever (and chief for two years); two brother-in-laws were on at a time. That was the thing to do, was to hang out at the fire station, and that’s what we did as kids… and the bug bit. I’ve been on ever since.”

Macbride Raptor Project becomes Iowa Raptor Project

SOLON– The Macbride Raptor Project, a program devoted to the preservation of Iowa’s birds of prey and their natural habitats, has changed its name to the Iowa Raptor Project effective June 1. The name change reflects the organization’s shift in focus from rehabilitating individual raptors to field research focusing on habitat needs and identifying risks to preserve raptor populations.

Solon City Clean Up Day June 11

SOLON– Each year in June, the City of Solon traditionally holds a City Clean Up Day the Saturday following the City-Wide Garage Sale weekend. The same theme will continue again this year. Johnson County Refuse will have several garbage trucks at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA) from 7:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 11. This is an opportunity for residents within the Solon city limits (for those who pay City of Solon garbage/recycle rates) to throw away some of those hard-to-get-rid-of items at no cost. There is a fee for appliances and tires. No household garbage is allowed.

JOHNSON COUNTY– In Iowa, one in four community college students is leading a double life– as a high school student.

Rating my four teams

Hawk Talk

I started covering the Hawkeyes for the North Liberty Leader in 2000 and was only going to follow football, men’s basketball and wrestling.
One of my female friends, Carrie, said in a joking manner, “That would be sexist.”
So I jumped on the women’s bandwagon after they started 5-5.
It was Lisa Bluder’s first year.
That Iowa team, led by guards Cara Consuegra and Lindsey Meder, went on to go 21-10, 12-4 in the Big Ten, they took second place and won the Big Ten Tournament.

Suffering from the epizoodic

Food For Thought

When I was still a toddler nearing 3 years old, I frequently suffered from a mysterious malady my mother called “the epizoodic.” Dr. Ralston, who made house calls, left a tiny envelope of little pink pills for my mother to give me as needed. The symptoms varied; headache, blurry vision, congestion, slight fever, drowsiness, runny nose, sneezing, scratchy throat, cough, sometimes I even had a rash. It felt like a common cold more than anything else, except it often disappeared after just a day or two, while colds tend to hang on for a couple weeks.

And they’re off!
