Michael Broghammer, along with 29 other young men and women, was confirmed on Sunday, Oct. 23, at St. Mary Catholic Church, in Solon, by Bishop Martin Amos. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the church. Family and friends joined Michael to continue the celebration, in the afternoon, at the home of his parents, Tim and Laurie Broghammer.

Old Gold Diner Christmas Tree Walk at SUMC Saturday, Dec. 3

SOLON– Solon’s Old Gold Diner will be hosting its second annual Christmas Tree Walk at the Solon United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall (change of venue) Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Cedar Rapids Horsemen’s Club Christmas soup supper Dec. 3

WESTERN– The Cedar Rapids Horsemen’s Club hosts its annuals awards banquet and Christmas soup supper on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the club house, 11808 Club Rd., in Western. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., a meal is served at 6 p.m. and after the meal, Santa Claus will arrive at 7 p.m. Awards will be presented following Santa’s visit. Bring a soup or dessert to share, and a wrapped gift for your child. Santa will distribute these when he comes after dinner. High Point and year-end awards will be presented and announced. Our Lord’s Church annual Candy Sale Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will hold its annual Candy Sale Friday, Dec. 2, from 3-7 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featured will be homemade candy as well as crafts, decorations and other gift items. The sale will be held at the church, located at 131 N. Market St.

St. Mary Cookie Walk Sunday, Dec. 4

SOLON– St. Mary Helping Hands will host its annual Cookie Walk Sunday, Dec. 4, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St. Mary Parish Hall.

Council votes down Solon Lofts site plan

City cites parking, square footage in overriding P&Z

SOLON– A plan to rehabilitate the former St. Mary auditorium into apartments and commercial space was shot down by members of the Solon City Council Nov. 16.
Council members rejected a site plan, submitted for Solon Lofts and Commons, despite its conditional recommendation for approval by the Solon Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission.
Prairie Equity Group, LLC, of Iowa City, proposed to renovate the 1915 building into lower-level commercial units and 16 upper-level condominiums, with the conversion of a separate adjacent lot into a gated parking area.

City of Solon receives planning award

BURLINGTON– The City of Solon was recognized Oct. 20, in Burlington, by the American Planner Association (APA) Iowa Chapter. The City of Solon was presented an award for Innovation in Economic Planning and Development for the Solon Comprehensive Plan 2015. The city council would like to send a special thank you to MSA Professional Services and the Steering Committee, Planning and Zoning Commission, city staff and those who participated in the online survey and public input meetings for helping to create a plan for Solon’s future.

Dine out at Solon restaurants to support Post Prom Nov. 30-Dec. 22

SOLON– Solon Post Prom provides an alcohol-free, safe and supervised celebration following prom for Solon students and their guests. The event is jointly supported through our schools, families, and community businesses.

Solon pantry offering Thanksgiving gift certificates to Sam’s Market

SOLON– The Solon Community Food Pantry is offering Thanksgiving gift certificates to Sam’s Main Street Market for enrolled families. The certificates are valid until Tuesday, Dec. 6, and are available at the pantry on Monday, Nov. 21 and Monday, Dec. 5. Please call 319-430-8655 if you are unable to visit the pantry on those dates to make other arrangements.

Survivor Gideon Frieder defines Holocaust for Solon students

SOLON– “My generation is dying,” Gideon Frieder said to the Solon students gathered in the middle school auditorium. “Twenty years from now, you will have no opportunity to talk to a Holocaust survivor. We will all be dead.”
