“A true role model”

Gov. Reynolds tours and praises Johnson County’s GuideLink Center

IOWA CITY– The GuideLink Center, also known as the Access Center of Johnson County, started accepting patients with an acute mental health or substance abuse crisis on Monday, Feb. 15, as part of a gradual “soft opening.”
The facility, located at 300 Southgate Ave. in Iowa City, has been a goal through roughly a decade of discussion in Johnson County. Momentum was gained in 2015 when then Jail Alternatives Coordinator Jessica Peckover started a crusade for a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) made up of law enforcement officers, starting with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO).

Public safety in the budgetary spotlight

Additional revenue is coming into NLs coffers, but a property tax increase hangs over the discussion of next years budget

NORTH LIBERTY Growth by a city can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, more housing and more businesses mean more tax revenue for the city. On the other, an increase in demand for city services quickly consumes revenue. And often, debt is incurred by the city to pay off new expenses over time.
For the City of North Liberty, the first discussion of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 (2021-2022) budget by the city council on Tuesday, Jan. 19, illustrated the effects of growth upon the community.

IOWA CITY– Students in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) will have a three-day weekend starting Friday, Feb. 12, as district staff make the final preparations to a return to 100 percent onsite learning on Monday, Feb. 15.

Parents can still choose a 100 percent virtual (online) learning option if they so desire, but the hybrid model: 50 percent in school and 50 percent online, is gone in the ICCSD.
