NORTH LIBERTY– Johnson County has long been a bastion of the Democratic Party, with 57,631 (active and non-active) registered voters as of Sept. 1, according to the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office. In contrast, the Republican Party has 20,693 (active and non-active) registered voters in the county in its ranks.
Despite being heavily outnumbered, Johnson County Republicans took to the Coralville Reservoir and Mehaffey Bridge on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 7, to show support for President Donald Trump during a “Make the Rez Great Boat Parade.”

TIFFIN– Due to the Iowa City Community School District conducting 100 percent online classes, all sports and other extra-curricular events are on hold until the district resumes at least 50 percent on-site education. Because of this, the annual Caroline Found Invitational Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Iowa City West High in honor of Found, a West High student and volleyball standout who died in a moped accident in 2011, was in jeopardy of being cancelled.

CEDAR RAPIDS– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity football team dipped to 1-2 on the season as they fell 30-7 to undefeated (3-0) Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic Friday, Sept. 11, at Saints Field.
The Creek Boys caught a lucky break halfway through the first quarter when the Saints fumbled the ball on a third-and-goal, and Mark Gorbatenko recovered for the Clippers. Unfortunately, the ensuing Clipper drive failed, and the period ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Clubb leads CCA past Benton Community with 11 kills in WaMaC West win

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Benton Community Bobcats Tuesday, Sept. 8, in Tiffin.
The Clippers held off the Bobcats for a 25-17 first-set win, overpowered them, 25-15, in the second, and dominated, 25-12, in the third. Junior Calia Clubb led the Creek Girls with 11 kills, while freshman Bliss Beck produced nine and senior Hailey Pollock made eight.

WILLIAMSBURG– The Williamsburg Sports Complex was “home” for Benton Community’s invitational cross country meet on Saturday, Sept. 12, due to derecho damage. The field of competitors expanded as Clear Creek Amana (CCA) became a late addition due to its own weather issue, namely, a Thursday, Sept. 10, rainout in Fairfield.

OXFORD– It is practically a cliché to say nothing has been left untouched, unchanged, by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
However, after a spring which saw all high school sports cancelled, schools closed and graduations cancelled, done drive-through style in school parking lots, or held virtually, another annual high school tradition is in jeopardy of being unlike any other.

Limkemann wins spot on Tiffin City Council

120 votes total in special election for open seat

TIFFIN– One hundred twenty votes decided who fills an empty seat on the Tiffin City Council.
A special election to fill the seat vacated by Rodney Walls in late May, was held Tuesday, Sept. 1, with Skylar Limkemann defeating Dapo “DJ” Oguntoyinbo, 77-39. There were 115 ballots cast on election day with three write-ins and five absentee ballots received for a grand total of 120 votes cast out of 2,680 registered voters for 4.48 percent.

TIFFIN– Week Two of the 2020 prep football season found the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers at home in a non-district contest against the Class 4A Muskies of Muscatine with a greatly reduced crowd in the bleachers, including a smaller but no less vocal student section. After a Week One loss on the road to Mount Pleasant, the home field advantage may have factored in as CCA dominated the Muskies, 41-21.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Liberty High varsity football team recovered from a 27-0 loss to Iowa City West in the 2020 season opener with a 7-3 Week Two win, on the road, against Cedar Rapids Jefferson at Kingston Stadium. The Bolts improved to 1-1, while the J-Hawks dropped to 0-2.
