Record-setting season ends in Williamsburg

Clippers beat Grinnell, 3-0; then fall to Raiders, 1-0

WILLIAMSBURG– Cappy’s Crew made it through the first round of Class 3A substate baseball by defeating the Grinnell Tigers, 3-0, in Williamsburg on Friday, July 17, but fell 1-0 to the Williamsburg Raiders on Monday, July 20.
The Clippers entered the District 9 semifinal with a 20-18 record to Grinnell’s 10-16 and, with the higher seed, took the “home” spot on the scoreboard.

Trojans pound Ottumwa in substate semifinal

DeLaney hits for the cycle to lead West

IOWA CITY– Baseball fans were treated to a rare feat Monday, July 20, as West High’s Kevin DeLaney hit for the cycle. DeLaney, a senior, belted out a single, a two-RBI double, a two-RBI triple and a solo home run in perfect sequential order as he led the Trojans with four hits in a 14-7 substate semifinal win over the Bulldogs from Ottumwa.

Trained volunteers provide unique service to county, area

IOWA CITY— Johnson County citizens have a variety of public safety agencies on duty around the clock to protect them, ranging from traditional fire departments and law enforcement agencies to the county’s ambulance service. Specialty units such as the Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Response Team, the Sheriff’s SWAT team, County Rescue 52 and the bomb squad supplement these organizations.
But one such unit operates literally in the murky shadows most of us never see.

From these farms to your table

Johnson County Farm Bureau showcases agriculture at Ag Fest

IOWA CITY — The theme for the Johnson County Farm Bureau’s 2015 Agriculture Fest was “From our Farm to your Table: Eat Healthy, Live Healthy.”
Kathy Swenka, the local Farm Bureau coordinator for Ag in the Classroom said the event was in its 21st year, and an ideal event for families to have fun while learning about the vital role agriculture plays in their day-to-day lives.

The 77-day challenge

CCA’s STEM Center is on time and on budget

TIFFIN— A challenge was issued in late April on the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District’s campus in Tiffin. Joe Greathouse, Assistant Professor in the Construction Management program and spearhead for the district’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Center, addressed a crowd of students, parents and local construction industry representatives packed into the middle school library.
“Not to scare you, but once school is out, you’ve got 77 days to build it,” he had said. “So, no pressure.”

NLFD - rapid response

New technology, strategies keep NLFD moving forward

This is the third and final installment of a three-part series on the ways the North Liberty Fire Department– a volunteer unit with only three paid positions– continues to meet the challenges of protecting an ever-growing community.

NORTH LIBERTY– Prior to becoming an Iowa City firefighter and part time assistant chief for the North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD), William Schmooke worked in town with an employer willing to let him leave for emergency calls.

Creek girls take two from Indee

CCA beats Independence 5-1... twice

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls softball team improved to 18-13 on the season with a doubleheader win against the Independence Mustangs at home Monday, June 29.
The Clippers took both games 5-1.
Indee’s run in the opener came in the top of the first inning as a runner galloped across the plate.
It was all CCA after that with Claire Navara belting out a two-out, two-RBI hit with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning.
Jacquelyn Fairholm followed with her own two-RBI single for a quick 4-1 lead.

CR Jefferson tests West, pulls off doubleheader upset

IC West falls 7-4, 8-4 to J-Hawks

CEDAR RAPIDS– As he was watching the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks warming up, West High coach Justin Lutjen said the doubleheader would be a good test for his Women of Troy.
Not only did the J-Hawks test West, the blue birds got the better of them with an upset sweep of the No. 1 (according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s June 26 rankings) team in Class 5A. Jefferson was the No. 5 ranked team.
In doing so, Jefferson also handed West its first MVC losses of the season, and the team’s third loss in a row following a Saturday, June 27, non-conference loss to Solon.

A unique fire engine for a unique area

Jefferson-Monroe Fire Department saves money while saving lives, property

SWISHER– There’s a new fire engine in town, and its uniqueness goes beyond the curves of its four-door cab. The truck, a 2009 Spartan “Furion” chassis with body by Rosenbauer will increase the efficiency of the Jefferson-Monroe Twp. Fire Department (Swisher Fire) while improving safety for the volunteer firefighters and saving the taxpayers money in the process.

Road warriors

Volunteers in Ely pick up what others toss out

ELY– Aluminum cans, fast food wrappers, plastic drink bottles, scraps of wood, chunks of Styrofoam and assorted miscellaneous car parts were some of the items recovered and deposited into large orange trash bags by seven kids on a clean-up mission Sunday, April 26, along Ely Road just north of Ely.
The kids– Audrey Sellon, Kaitlyn Sellon, Noah Klamerus, Hunter Andersen, Lake Klamerus, Sam Smith and Aidan Sellon– were led by Ely Public Library director Sarah Sellon in a semi-annual clean up event sponsored by the library.

retaining recruits

This is the second installment of a three-part series on the ways the North Liberty Fire Department– a volunteer unit with only three paid positions– continues to meet the challenges of protecting an ever-growing community.

NORTH LIBERTY– In addition to studying, training, relaxing and cooking, North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD)’s members now have the luxury of a bed to sleep in while pulling overnight shifts at the station. It’s a recent and particularly convenient addition for those volunteers who live out of town.

Spartans sweep Clippers

Solon takes pair from CCA, 13-6 and 3-2, in Tiffin

TIFFIN– Soggy conditions at Spartan field led to a last-minute move to Tiffin for the annual baseball clash between Solon and Clear Creek Amana (CCA) on Thursday, June 25, in WaMaC conference baseball. When the dust settled, the Spartans had swept the Clippers 13-6 and 3-2, improving their record to 12-11 while dropping CCA below the .500 mark to 10-12.
Despite the move, the Spartans remained the home team on the scoreboard and faced the Clippers in their road blue uniforms.
