Lady Spartans too much for Clipper girls to handle

Solon 65, CCA 49

SOLON– Josie Durr opened last Thursday’s varsity game between the Solon Lady Spartans and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers with a 3-point shot, and went on to lead Solon with 21 points in a 65-49 win.
The Clippers were coming off a 63-40 win Tuesday night on the road at Benton Community while Solon was regrouping from a 43-37 loss at Mount Vernon. However, the Creek Girls quickly found themselves in a hole they spent the rest of the game trying to dig out from.

Taylor wins close mayoral election in Swisher

Just 15 votes separate two candidates Feb. 4

SWISHER– Fifteen votes.
That’s how close the mayoral election was Tuesday, Feb. 4, in this small northwestern Johnson County community as voters decided who would replace Tim Mason as mayor.
Christopher J. Taylor won the special election with 151 of 288 total votes (52 percent) against 136 votes (47 percent) for Randy Hurlbert. The seat was vacated in November when Mason abruptly resigned minutes after City Clerk Connie Meier resigned. Council member Mary Gudenkauf has been acting as mayor pro tempore ever since, albeit reluctantly.

Cougars hand Women of Troy another loss

IOWA CITY– A pair of decisive wins led to a pair of painful losses for the West High Women of Troy. After knocking off Bettendorf 63-35 and Waterloo East 61-18, coach BJ Mayer’s crew fell 60-51 at Valley High School in West Des Moines and struggled against the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars at home.

West boys pound Prairie, 87-40

IOWA CITY– Throughout the season West High coach Steve Bergman has said his team needs to be challenged. His Trojans were a lot of things Friday night (Jan. 31), but challenged was not one of them.
West High came into the Mississippi Valley Conference inter-divisional contest with a 12-2 (8-1) record and a second-place ranking in the Mississippi Division while the Prairie Hawks were 4-10 (2-7) in the Valley Division.
The Trojans plucked and cooked the Prairie Hawks, 87-40.

Fun in any season

Friendly foursome overcomes challenges, brings fun back to Bobbers Grill, Scales Pointe

NORTH LIBERTY– It was an opportunity that hit suddenly, led to a leap of faith, a flurry of activity, and culminated in four friends becoming business partners.
But that’s only the beginning.
When Rick and Marcia Frauenholtz, and Jeff and Mary Dostal purchased Bobbers Grill, and the Scales Pointe Campground, nobody could have foreseen the challenges and rewards to come. As long time campers, they were familiar with the place and many of its patrons. They had watched dishearteningly as its popularity declined.

CCA faces two tough losses in a row

Clipper boys struggle with Maquoketa

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– It’s been a tough season for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers boys’ varsity basketball team with only four wins and (at this writing) nine losses, two of them back-to-back and by 20 points each.
After losing 71-50 to Benton Community on Tuesday, Jan. 21, Steve Ottoson’s Clippers came home for a Friday night tilt with Maquoketa, and found themselves in trouble early before losing, 57-37. The Cardinals improved to 5-9 with the win.
