NLPD joins the CIT movement

Two officers to attend training in May

NORTH LIBERTY– Add the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) to the list of law enforcement agencies in Johnson County buying in to the concept of Crisis Intervention Training (CIT).
The Memphis, Tenn., Police Department pioneered the concept in the late 1980s as a way to better deal with people having a mental health issue such as hallucinations, schizophrenic episodes or paranoia. In the early 2000s, the police department in San Antonio, TX, expanded on what became known as “The Memphis Model” by training every officer in a 40-hour CIT program.

CCA approves SAVE and PPEL budgets

TIFFIN– The Board of Directors for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District approved $1,480,000 in Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) spending for the 2016-2017 fiscal year which starts on July 1. The Board also approved $1,991,096 in expenditures of Secure Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) funds which were previously known as School Infrastructure Local Option sales and services tax or “SILO.”
The Board reviewed the budgets and approved them at their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 20, at the Middle School in Tiffin.

TIFFIN– Tim Benson’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity soccer team improved to 3-2 on the season by narrowly avoiding an upset by the winless Marion Indians Tuesday, April 19, at home.
The game, stalemated through 100 minutes of play, was settled by a round of Penalty Kicks (PKs). Tyreke Williams, Wyatt Sedlacek and keeper Ian McDonald scored, giving the Clippers a 3-0 PK score good for the 1-0 victory.

CCA girls wins 7-0 and boys 5-0 in soccer doubleheader

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity soccer teams swept the visiting Hawks of West Delaware in a girls-boys doubleheader Tuesday, April 12, on the home turf.
Matt Harding’s girls improved to 4-0 with the 7-0 shelling of the Hawks in the opener, while Tim Benson’s boys upped their record to 2-1 with a 5-0 win in the nightcap.

Hayden Taylor is making a name for himself on the mats

SOLON– Hayden Taylor lives for wrestling.
For six years, it’s been his passion and he’s got five state titles and numerous other awards to show for it.
Hayden, a sixth-grader in Solon, was introduced to the world of wrestling at the age of 6 when his dad, Jason Taylor, asked if he was interested in wrestling and said he could hang out at Spartan (varsity) practice as long as he didn’t get in trouble grade-wise with his school work.

Solon came into the contest with a 4-0 record with wins over Iowa Mennonite, Mediapolis, Wapello and Bellevue-Marquette Catholic, while the Clippers were basking in the glory of their season-opening win over Mid-Prairie two days earlier.
After two overtime periods and 15 Penalty Kicks (PK), Solon improved to 5-0, while the Creek Boys felt the sting of their first loss of the season.

TIFFIN— In March of 2014, Joe Greathouse, an assistant professor in the construction management program at Kirkwood Community College, introduced the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board to the idea of an innovative educational experience for high school students in the Architectural, Construction and Engineering (ACE) Academy. He proposed students, under the tutelage of seasoned professionals, design and build a facility dedicated to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) on the CCA campus.

CEDAR RAPIDS— The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the 2016 preseason high school soccer rankings on Monday, April 4, with the West High Women of Troy at the top of Class 3A. West posted a 19-2 record last season on their way to the 3A Championship.
Later Monday afternoon, West faced Cedar Rapids Jefferson in an exhibition match, at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids, and won 3-0 in 40 minutes of play.
