A night of firsts for the Trojans

West gets by Cougars 12-9 in season home opener

IOWA CITY– “Firsts” were in abundance Friday, Aug. 29, at West High as the Trojans welcomed the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars for week one of varsity football.
It was the first official varsity game on the new synthetic turf. It was the first game for Garett Hartwig as head coach after taking over for Brian Sauser in June. It was the first career catch for junior Gabe Huinker that won the game for West.

Progress continues on CCA school projects

OXFORD — Ray Willoughby started his building projects report to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board with a little bit of good news.
“Ben (Macumber, principal of Amana Elementary) got his air turned on fully tonight,” Willoughby said, referring to the completion of a $453,000 renovation project at the school. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) work, along with electrical upgrades throughout the building, are two of several projects funded by a $48 million bond issue approved by voters in February for renovation and expansion.

Coach’s bump puts Clippers volleyball under new leadership for 2014 season

TIFFIN– It may be rough sailing for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers as the varsity volleyball season gets underway without Brian Bronzynski at the helm.
Bronzynski was relieved of his coaching duties earlier this year after his teaching position was cut, and he was told the CCA district would not offer him the coaching contract without a teaching position. This was in the wake of his wife Karla being diagnosed with cancer, and Bronzynski taking time away from school to be with her during treatment.

A new era for Trojan football

New head coach, field and competition for 2014

IOWA CITY– The 2014 high school football season kicks off on Friday, Aug. 29, and for the West High Trojans, it will be the start of a new era on three counts.
First, after six seasons, head coach Brian Sauser has left the program for a position in Oklahoma. Sauser has been replaced by one of his assistants, Garrett Hartwig. Second, the old grass gridiron has been torn out and replaced by synthetic turf.
Third, the Trojans will no longer compete within the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC), but instead in Class 4A district play.

MRAP armored vehicle "just another tool"

Johnson County law enforcement agencies band together for armored vehicle

JOHNSON COUNTY– It’s just another tool in the toolbox for law enforcement personnel. So says Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek about the MRAP (Mine-Resistant, Ambush Protected) truck his department and five other law enforcement agencies across the county recently joined together to obtain.

CCA solidifies sidewalk agreement with City of Tiffin

OXFORD– An agreement between the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district and the City of Tiffin for the construction of a sidewalk-trail was signed by the school board Wednesday, July 23, during its regular meeting at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford. The agreement stipulates that the district will build an eight-foot sidewalk from the west edge of its property (by the northwest corner of the high school) to Ireland Avenue, with the city reimbursing the district for three feet of the width.

District champs!

Wagner’s run gives CCA 3-2 edge over Vinton-Shellsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers earned another achievement for the 2014 baseball season Monday, July 21, by winning the Class 3A District 9 championship with a 3-2 win over the Vikings of Vinton-Shellsburg in Williamsburg.
The Clippers went up on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning as Tanner Bandy smacked a line drive over the left field fence for a solo home run, giving CCA a 1-0 lead. The Vikings tied the game in the fourth and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth.

Clippers advance in district baseball

WILLIAMSBURG– Conventional wisdom has it that it is tough to beat a team three times in one season, let alone in one week. But the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers baseball team dashed that notion as well as South Tama’s hopes of advancing toward the state championship Friday, July 18, in a Class 3A Substate 5 District 9 semifinal baseball game in Williamsburg. The Clippers trounced the Trojans 10-3 to go on to face Vinton-Shellsburg in a district final Monday, July 21.

Brief rise and fall for Clipper girls

CCA 6, Washington 1 in July 15 regional final

CEDAR RAPIDS– A late-season rally by the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers softball team continued Tuesday, July 15, as they earned the right to compete in the state softball tournament by defeating the Washington Demons 6-1 in a Class 4A regional final at Xavier High School.

Davenport West 7, Women of Troy 1

West’s tourney hopes dashed in the dirt

IOWA CITY– The varsity softball season ended Monday, July 14, for the West High Trojans as they fell 7-1 in a Class 5A regional semifinal at home against the Falcons of Davenport West.
For coach Justin Lutjen, his first season with the Women of Troy ended far too soon.
“This isn’t how we wanted to end it,” he said with tears in his eyes. “We had high expectations and those will never change, and they won’t change next year.”

West wins two-day battle against City, dumps Solon

West High Trojans reign in Iowa City

IOWA CITY– It’s the doubleheader played over two days with bragging rights on the line: the annual meeting between City High and West High on the baseball diamond. Last year, the Little Hawks and Trojans split the contest with each team taking a win.
This year, it was all West.
The Trojans opened the series at home on Monday, July 7. Coach Charlie Stumpff was recognized and honored for over 600 career wins prior to the game, and the West boys gave him one more by taking down the Little Hawks, 6-2.

The Motor Doctor is in (Shueyville)

Auto repair with a conscience

SHUEYVILLE– Hippocrates is said to have coined the phrase, “Primum non nocerum (First do no harm),” as part of his famous and time-honored oath for physicians. Although he’s not a medical doctor, Marck Dudrey, aka: the Motor Doctor, takes that philosophy to heart when it comes to his customers’ wallets.
“I like to think of myself as auto repair with a conscience,” Dudrey said. “I’m not going to sell you something on your car that I don’t feel you need.”
