CCA schools among those struggling with No Child Left Behind rules

OXFORD– The state of Iowa saw an increase in the number of schools “in need of assistance” designation under the controversial No Child Left Behind (NCLB). According to a report published Tuesday, Sept. 16, by the Iowa Department of Education, 852 out of 1,288 Iowa schools, or 66 percent, failed to meet federal proficiency standards, an increase over last year’s total of 64 percent.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district is among those considered in need of assistance by the federal government.

West tripped up in overtime

West falls to Bettendorf, 28-27

IOWA CITY– “Gut-wrenching.”
That’s how West High football coach Garrett Hartwig described his squad’s 28-27 loss in overtime to Bettendorf Friday, Oct. 3, at home.
“I got more respect for the 53 men in that room (gesturing toward the locker room) right now than anybody else,” Hartwig said. “At this point in the season, it’s about executing. Bettendorf executed, credit goes to them they’re a great program.” Hartwig said his Trojans were getting better, but “we’re not where we need to be yet.”

Raiders scuttle Clippers’ senior night

TIFFIN– Seven seniors were recognized for their contributions to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) volleyball program on Senior Night, Tuesday, Sept. 30. Lauren Stopko, McKenzie Fuller, Bailey Butler, Dacia Lipkea, Hanna Stokes, Natalie Brimeyer and Jana Sefzik were honored just before the varsity march with the Williamsburg Raiders.
Unfortunately for the seventh-ranked (in Class 4A) Clippers, the un-ranked Raiders spoiled the special night by winning three games to two in an upset.

Low attendance at courthouse annex information sessions

IOWA CITY– Attendance at public information meetings about a proposed $33.4 million bond issue to build a courthouse annex has been “steady,” according to Johnson County Supervisor Rod Sullivan.
But that doesn’t mean they are drawing a crowd.
“It’s been pretty steady at about three or four people per event,” Sullivan said.

Clippers wreak havoc upon Chiefs

CCA 52, Keokuk 7, for a happy homecoming

TIFFIN– There have been a lot of reasons to smile so far this varsity football season at Clear Creek Amana. Decimating the Keokuk Chiefs 52-7 Friday, Sept. 26, for the Homecoming game is one of them.
“That was a good one,” coach Matt Hughes said after the game. “It was just another team effort, these guys are just catching fire at the right time and each week they’re getting better and better just doing our base offense. We’re not doing anything crazy, just our base offense and just trying to get a little more aggressive week in and week out.”
It worked.

With a new elementary school opening on the east side of Tiffin next fall, the district assigned a committee to determine new attendance area boundaries for four elementary schools, which was a three-month process.
The district’s board of directors received the committee’s recommendation on Wednesday, Sept. 10, and approved it at the board’s regular monthly meeting Thursday, Sept. 18.

TIFFIN– Their work is done, a recommendation has been formed.

Let victory ring

CCA denies Washington 20-17

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) coach Matt Hughes summed up his team’s 20-17 win over the Washington Demons in one word. “Unbelievable!”
“I’m so proud of these kids,” Hughes said. “I’ve never seen a group of kids that took what we did in the off-season, and the hard work that they put in, and applied it to the football field for four quarters. They had a lot of things that went against them tonight, had some adversity, but they came up and they never quit. They kept their heads up and they had confidence they could do it.”
