Trojans roll over Lions

Iowa City West crushes Linn-Mar, 50-7

MARION– The Iowa City West High Trojans improved their chances of a playoff berth Friday, Oct. 14, with a 50-7 pounding of the Linn-Mar Lions in Marion. The win improved West’s overall record to 6-2 and 3-1 in Class 4A District 8 behind Cedar Rapids Kennedy (5-3/3-1) and presumptive district champion Cedar Rapids Prairie (7-1/4-0).
Trojan defense kept the Lions caged on their end of the field throughout the first half, denying Linn-Mar the chance to cross the 50-yard line offensively until the final minute of the half.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Iowa City West High Trojans picked up a decisive 24-10 win over the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars Friday, Oct. 7, at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.

Solon defeats Liberty freshmen, 40-6

IOWA CITY– Solon’s freshman Spartans rolled over the Liberty High “Original (O) Bolts” 40-6 Thursday, Sept. 29, at Iowa City West High.
The Spartans opened with a pass from Camden Miller to Andrew Coons for a touchdown with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter and scored their second touchdown on a run not quite two minutes later. The O-Bolts blocked the extra point kick, but Solon held a 13-0 lead. The Spartan defense stymied the Bolts and intercepted a Drake Woody pass late in the period to end a Liberty drive.

The Great Race

Third time the charm for Shueyville man

SHUEYVILLE– For Shueyville’s John Williams, the third time was not only the charm, but also charmed.
Williams, a retired teacher from the College Community School District’s Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, participated in the 2016 Great Race cross-country road rally and made it all the way from near the California coast to Moline, Ill.
This was Williams’ third attempt at the event, held annually since the early 1980s, and the first time he made it from starting line to finish line.

Never before

CCA earns first-ever 6-0 record with 30-14 win over West Delaware

TIFFIN– The father-and-son coaching duo of Ronnie and Matt Hughes have a simple philosophy for getting through the varsity football season at Clear Creek Amana (CCA).
“Every week, we want to be 1-0,” Matt Hughes said. “If we get enough 1-0s, at the end of the season, we’ll be happy.”
So far the Clippers have racked up six, surpassing the 5-0 mark which hadn’t been attained since 1999, and now establishing a new team-best benchmark after defeating West Delaware, 30-14, Friday, Sept. 30 in Tiffin.

Five-and-0

Clippers earn historic win 26-0 over CP-U

TIFFIN– To borrow from the late musical artist known as Prince, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers likely partied like it was 1999 in the wake of their 26-0 win Friday, Sept. 23 over Center Point-Urbana. The year 1999 was the last time the Creek Boys had a 5-0 record, which is where they and West Delaware stand in Class 3A District 4.
The win was doubly sweet for the Clippers coming on their Homecoming night with quarterback Ashton Carpenter presented as the King with Be DeShaw as his Queen.

Creek Girls bit by the Pointers

Liberty High construction continues ahead of schedule

NORTH LIBERTY— Construction continues on the new Liberty High School ahead of a fall 2017 opening. According to Liberty principal Scott Kibby, work on the 210,000 square foot facility is approximately one month ahead of schedule.
The school, located near the intersection of Dubuque St. and North Liberty Road, is being built to accommodate 1,000 students initially with a 500-student addition planned for the future. Kibby anticipates opening with around 600 students, at this time, subject to attendance boundary changes and population changes in North Liberty.

Prairie scorches Liberty High football, 53-6

IOWA CITY– Just before the opening kick off Thursday, Sept. 15, at Iowa City West High, Liberty High’s coach Jeff Gordon sounded worried. “They’re good, they’re really good,” he said, nodding across the field at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Hawks.
The Hawks and the Liberty Lightning’s “O (Original) Bolts” clashed in a freshman game, with the Hawks blitzing the Lightning, 53-6.

He’s passionate about beer

Bill Heinrich rides the craft beer wave

SOLON– Beer is an amber alcoholic beverage brewed by the fermentation of cereals, usually malted barley, and flavored with hops. Beer has been around since at least the fifth millennium B.C. in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
In 2012, according to The Beer Institute, Americans consumed 6.3 billion gallons of beer in the previous year with an individual average of 28.3 gallons.
Whatever the 2016 consumption statistics are, Brian Heinrich can rest assured his Kickshaw Barrel Works ORB, a small-batch craft beer, will have contributed to them.

The public has its say on CCA’s facilities planning process

Questions without easy answers

TIFFIN– The question itself is relatively simple on its face, imploring Clear Creek Amana (CCA) district officials to consider how best to accommodate expected continued enrollment and likely overcrowding with $25 million available in 2018.
The solution, or solutions, are not quite as simple, attendees at a Sept. 8 public forum at the high school in Tiffin discovered.
