Friday morning, Sept. 25, his funeral was held in Oxford. That evening, his son Anthony joined his teammates on the varsity football team with a Class 3A district game in Newton. In honor of his dad, Anthony Hennes wore a specially crafted jersey bearing the number 41, Mike’s number, in place of his usual number 15.

Lightning go 4-0 in home volleyball tourney

Cassidy Hartman shells Liberty’s opponents with 33 kills

NORTH LIBERTY– The Lightning are back, and they’re fully charged. Liberty High’s varsity volleyball team returned to the floor after a three-week pause due to the Iowa City Community School District opting to start the 2020-2021 academic year in a 100 percent online setting in response to COVID-19 positivity rates in Johnson County. With positivity rates well below 15 percent, the district planned to return to a hybrid (virtual and on-site) education model on Monday, Sept. 28, which green-lighted sports and other extra-curricular activities to resume on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The Barkers again lead the way for CCA XC

CCA school board approves the student leadership council Homecoming plan

OXFORD– It is doubtful any aspect of the school year is left untouched by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including the annual fall tradition of Homecoming. The student leadership council at the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School, in Tiffin, wrestled with how to continue the time-honored celebration while balancing health and safety concerns. Lower COVID-19 positivity rates allow ICCSD to return to classrooms on Sept. 28

IOWA CITY– On Monday, Sept. 28, students in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) will report to their classrooms for the first time this academic year.
The district opened the 2020-2021 school year on Tuesday, Sept. 8, in a 100 percent virtual (all online) format after receiving a waiver from the Iowa Department of Education, which lifted a requirement for at least 50 percent of learning being delivered in-person, due to COVID-19 positivity rates greater than 15 percent in Johnson County.

Moving in the right direction

NLFD cuts response times, expands paid staff, and takes delivery of a new fire engine

NORTH LIBERTY– When it comes to emergency services, minutes count.
A person not breathing begins to suffer brain damage in three minutes, and it becomes irreversible by nine minutes. A person in cardiac arrest (not breathing and no pulse) has his or her chance of survival drop 10 percent with every minute. Fire doubles in size every minute. For firefighters, this reality translates into a relentless quest to minimize response times.
