Trojans thump Bobcats to open season

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans opened their 2014 campaign at home with a visit from the Benton Community Bobcats and a 5-0 win.
The Trojans went up on the scoreboard in the third inning when Brock Hatzky drove in Grant Ewing and made it to third on an error. A balk sent Hatzky home and moved Declan Doyle, who walked, to second. Devin Raffensperger blasted a ball down the right field line to the fence for a double, moving Doyle to third. Nate Boland fired a rocket down the left field line to score Doyle and give West a 3-0 lead.

CCA to consider new school attendance area boundaries

OXFORD– With a new elementary school scheduled to open in Tiffin in the fall of 2015, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board of directors is beginning the process of evaluating and redefining attendance area boundaries.

Choir, speech take center stage

OXFORD– After all of the performers and their families and friends left, the remainder of the evening was comparatively bland.
Third, fourth and fifth grade choir members at Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) performed for the Clear Creek Amana school board during a regular meeting Wednesday, April 16, in the CCE library. Also on the venue were four CCA high school students who competed in the All-State Speech Contest at University of Northern Iowa on March 31.

West’s O’Deen is thorn in the Lions’ paw

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans remained undefeated at 12-0 in the wake of a 1-0 victory at home Tuesday, May 6, over the Linn-Mar Lions.
Ryan O’Deen, a senior, took a pass from junior Peter Murry and fired a shot into the corner of the Lions’ net to score roughly five minutes into the match. West held off the Lions to seal the shutout, despite withering attacks by the Lions in the final minutes.
Iowa City West held the top spot in the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association’s May 3 rankings. City High was the No. 3-ranked squad and the Lions were No. 4.

Women of Troy hold Kennedy

IOWA CITY– As the final horn sounded and the teams headed for mid-field to shake hands, West High coach Dave Rosenthal was heard yelling out, “that was good soccer.”
His Women of Troy held off the Cougars of Cedar Rapids Kennedy Friday, May 9, at Baker Field on the West High campus, improving their record to 7-1 in the MVC and 9-1 overall to hold the top spot in the Mississippi Division. West’s only loss thus far came at the hands of Linn-Mar on Tuesday, May 6.

Clear Creek Amana school board approves 1:1 computer purchase for middle school in 2014-15

OXFORD– Starting this fall, every student in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) middle school will have their own Chromebook personal computer to use in class and at home. The district’s school board approved spending $157,739.50 to purchase 500 devices at its regular meeting Wednesday, April 16, at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford.
