Iowa women still have a chance

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women had three games last week.
They entered the week 15-10, 5-8 in the Big Ten and need at least four or five wins to get into the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight year.
That could include a win or two in the Big Ten Tournament.
They are the only Big Ten team to have made the last eight NCAA Tournaments.
That was a huge dagger to start the week off with a last-second 78-76 loss at Minnesota.

Hawkeyes alone on top

Hawk Talk

Iowa went into the weekend tied with Maryland and Indiana for first place in the Big Ten.
The Terrapins lost on Saturday at Wisconsin, Indiana lost Sunday afternoon at Michigan State and Iowa beat Minnesota on Sunday night, but first…
Here we go again.
The Hawkeye women’s and men’s basketball teams played last Thursday night… at almost the same time. The women’s game started at 7:30 p.m., the men at 8 p.m.
The good news is that they were both on television, the bad news is that both teams lost.
I’ll start with the women.

Iowa ranked 4th in nation

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men played two games last week, taking down Penn State, 73-49, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, then traveling to Illinois Sunday and winning, 77-65.
Good defense, Adam Woodbury getting a career-high 15 rebounds and 28 bench points helped Iowa win its 15th straight home game against the Nittany Lions.
In the win at Illinois, Woody came through with 14 rebounds, 10 points and led the team with four assists.
The big guy from Sioux City has grabbed 10 or more rebounds on five of the last six games.

Hawkeye Men 8-1 in Big Ten

Well, they did it again.
The Big Ten showed the North Liberty Leader sports staff no respect.
Okay, I’m the only one on the staff covering the Hawkeyes, but the Big Ten scheduled two Iowa games on Thursday last week, men’s and women’s basketball, and one started at 6 p.m., one at 7 p.m.
To top that off, they scheduled Iowa men’s and women’s basketball games on Sunday, both against Northwestern and both starting at 2 p.m.
The men and women both beat the Wildcats that day so that helps.

Iowa Ranked 4th in the Nation

Hawk Talk

Iowa played two games last week, taking a road trip to Rutgers and winning, 90-76, and hosting Purdue at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last Sunday beating the Boilermakers, 83-71.
The last time the Hawks opened the Big Ten season 7-0 was the Big Ten championship team in 1970 that went 14-0 in the conference.
Talk about an offensive team.

Hawkeye women road trip

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women had two road basketball games last week, beating Wisconsin, 57-54, and then losing 80-73 at Michigan State.
The win over the Badgers was big for two reasons.
First it snapped a two-game losing streak and any time you can pick up a road win in the Big Ten it’s a good thing for team rankings.
This was another one of those games where Iowa jumped out to a big lead of 16 points at the end of the third quarter, got outscored 19-6 in the fourth quarter, but held on to win.

Iowa men 3-0 in the Big Ten

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeyes took care of business last week with a 77-66 win over Nebraska at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
This had to be a tough game for the Hawks to get up for.
They opened the Big Ten season with a win over No. 1 Michigan State at home and then beat 13th-ranked Purdue on the road before they played Nebraska, which lost its first two Big Ten games.
Iowa was down 10-0 before Jarrod Uthoff got warmed up.

Nightmare in Pasadena

Hawk Talk

I was only 4 years old the last time Iowa won a Rose Bowl.
The Hawkeyes beat the California Golden Bears, led by quarterback Joe Kapp, 38-12, on Jan. 1, 1959.
Bob Jeter was the MVP after running for 194 yards on only nine carries (21.5 yard average) including an 81-yard touchdown run.
Sophomore Willie Fleming scored twice. That was the fifth straight game that Willie would score two touchdowns.
The Hawkeyes were crowned National Champions by the Football Writers’ Association of America after finishing 8-1-1.

Hawks win two at Carver

Hawk Talk

It was doubleheader Tuesday last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, with the women beating Drake, 89-76, in the first game, while the men took care of Tennessee Tech, 85-63.

Hawkeye women

I was a little concerned when Iowa hosted the Drake Bulldogs last week.
The Bulldogs played Iowa down to the wire last year at Des Moines with the Hawks coming out on top, 100-98, on a last-second field goal by Samantha Logic.
This year, Drake opened the season with a 74-70 win over Iowa State, a team which beat the Hawkeyes 69-66 at Ames.

Bounce back Saturday

Hawk Talk

It was bounce-back Saturday for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams last weekend.
The men took care of Drake, 70-64, in Des Moines, while the Hawkeye women beat Bradley, 60-53, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last Saturday afternoon.
Hawk men
The Hawks won the first game of the Big Four Classic in Des Moines while the University of Northern Iowa took care of fourth-ranked Iowa State, 81-79, in the second game.

Hawks lose twice at Ames

Hawk Talk

It was tough enough when the Hawkeye football team lost to Michigan State 16-13 in the Big Ten football championship game a couple weeks ago in Indianapolis.
Last week, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams lost in consecutive nights to the Cyclones.
The football loss was a back and forth contest in which the Spartans led going into the fourth quarter but Iowa regained the lead and kept it until 27 seconds were left on the clock.

Hawk wrestlers are still undefeated

The Iowa wrestlers knocked off 11th-ranked Rutgers, 29-6, last week at Carver.
The Hawks had upset wins at 157 pounds (Edwin Cooper) and 285 (Sam Stoll).
Rutgers was ranked 17th at 157 and sixth at 285.
“It’s good because it’s my first ranked win,” said Stoll. “I know there’s more I could have done in the match.”
Iowa had technical falls at 125 pounds (Thomas Gillman, 21-6) and 149 pounds (Brandon Sorenson, 21-6).
