Spring Football 2017 (part two)

Hawk Talk

This is the second part of a series previewing the Iowa Hawkeye spring football practice. Last week I looked at the offensive line, which returns six players with starting experience. This week I’ll talk about the tight ends, wide receivers and fullbacks.

Tight ends

Kirk Ferentz likes to use his tight ends, who not only need to be able to catch the ball but be able to block on running plays.
It really hurt the offense when tight end George Kittle went out with an injury after the Purdue game.

Another week... another two wins

The Iowa men played two games last week, going to Wisconsin and knocking off the Badgers, 59-57, and closing out the regular season in Carver-Hawkeye Arena Sunday beating Penn State, 90-79.
Nine hours after the Iowa women got knocked out of the Big Ten Tournament by Northwestern, the Hawkeye men, with Jordan Bohannon knocking down a 3-pointer with nine seconds left, upset the 21st-ranked Badgers.
The only other team to hold Wisconsin to fewer than 57 points was Purdue, the Big Ten Champion.
Wisconsin had won six straight against Iowa.
What a year Jordan has had.

NIT for Hawkeye men and women

It was bittersweet to see the Iowa men and women play in the NIT and WNIT last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Both had a shot at the NCAA tournament.
The men were listed in the first four out by the selection committee.
If they could have beaten Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten tourney, they might have gone to the Big Dance.
The women were also on the bubble and a first-round loss to Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament might have cost them a chance to go dancing.
The good news was each had another chance to play in Carver.

Two big wins…NCAA or NIT?

Hawk Talk

The Iowa men had two games last week, beating Indiana in overtime at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, 96-90, and going to Maryland Saturday and coming home with a convincing 83-69 win.
The Hawks sit at 16-13, 8-8 in the Big Ten with two games left plus the Big Ten Tournament.
Will that be enough for a NCAA bid?
Probably not, but they have a chance to play in the NIT if they finish with a winning record.
The Indiana win was Iowa’s fourth overtime game so far this season.
Iowa beat Michigan and Indiana in single overtime.

Senior Day win for the Iowa wrestlers

Hawk Talk

The Iowa wrestlers opened the weekend Friday night at Indiana crushing the Hoosiers, 33-7.
That was Iowa’s 22nd straight road dual win.
Senior day was on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and the Hawks handled the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 27-9.
Thomas Gilman (125 pounds) and Michael Kemerer (157) both had pins for the Hawks against the Hoosiers, but first I have to talk about Gilman’s pin the week before against Minnesota.

22 new Hawkeyes

Hawk Talk

Football signing day has come and gone and the Iowa Hawkeyes filled some needs and got one of the top recruits in the nation.
Iowa needed wide receivers, defensive backs and defensive linemen.
They signed four, maybe five wide receivers; five, maybe six defensive backs and three, maybe four defensive linemen.
Did the Hawks find another Matt VandeBerg?
Matt wasn’t recruited by any DI schools. He was thought to be a gray shirt but started as a freshman. His junior year he led the team with 65 catches.
How about a Josey Jewell?

No. 4 Iowa defeats No. 3 Ohio State, 21-13

The Hawks needed this win at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last Friday.
Iowa’s wrestlers won six of 10 matches, had a technical fall and a major decision, and they did it without Cory Clark wrestling.
It’s always good to open with Thomas Gilman getting things started at 125 pounds with a 23-8 technical fall which gave the Hawkeyes a 5-0 lead.
I was looking forward to watching Cory Clark, ranked second, go up against top-ranked Nathan Tomasello at 133.
Gilman and Tomasello faced off last year at 125 with Thomas winning two of three matches.

Hawkeye women go 2-0

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women, for the first time this season, won back-to-back games in the Big Ten.
They started at Rutgers and finished at Carver-Hawkeye Arena against Minnesota.
Iowa had a big 71-59 road win at Rutgers last week.
I know every win is big in the conference, but if the Hawkeyes want to get back to the Big Dance in March, a couple of wins on the road will help.
The Scarlet Knights were 3-0 at home in conference play with victories over Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Penn State drops Iowa, 26-11

Hawk Talk

Going into the Penn State wrestling, meet I had a little better feeling than I did against No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys had every wrestler ranked, while the Nittany Lions had eight ranked, two at No. 1.
Going into the match, the Hawkeyes also had eight ranked, with Thomas Gilman No. 1.
But then the bomb was dropped before the match was started– Sam Stoll (285 pounds) was out for the season with a torn ACL.
Tough break for Sam, who was coming off season-ending knee surgery and had only been wrestling for a month.

Iowa stuns Purdue

Hawk Talk

There is nothing like waking up the day after the Hawkeyes knock off a top-20 team.
Last Friday, I woke up knowing Iowa took down the Purdue Boilermakers, 83-78, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Thursday night.
This is the same Boilermaker team that thrashed the Hawks, 89-67, on Dec. 28.
In the first game, Purdue scored first, never trailed and outscored Iowa 40-38 in the paint. The Hawks were 13-13 from the free throw line.
