Hawkeyes Devyn and Zach

Hawk Talk

Devyn Marble, Zach McCabe and Ben Brust all signed to play for the Hawkeyes and coach Todd Lickliter during fall 2009.
Coach Lickliter was fired in spring 2010. Ben bolted to Wisconsin while Devyn and Zach stuck with the Hawkeyes to play for new coach Fran McCaffery.
Iowa fans were thankful.
When Devyn and Zach were freshmen the Hawks finished 11-20, 8-8 at home. They were led by senior Jarryd Cole, who averaged 8.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and shot 57 percent from the floor.
Devyn played in all 31 games and started six. He averaged 19 minutes and scored 5.7 points per game.

Prime Time in NL

Hawk Talk

Prime Time is back in North Liberty for its 27th year. It is the longest running summer league in the U.S. and the main reason is Randy Larson, who not only runs the league, but coaches as well.
I remember watching him as a player-coach when the league started.
Randy and I are the same age, so I’ve always been impressed with his energy and passion for Hawkeye basketball.
I went to some of those games at City High when the league first started. There were two gyms and they both were hot.
I saw Chris Street, Jess Settles and even former Hawkeye football player Willie Guy play.

Game Time in NL

Game Time is back in North Liberty as the action started last week at the North Liberty Recreation Center.
It was business as usual as Melissa Dixon and Samantha Logic scored 41 and 29 points respectively. Melissa’s team won and Samantha’s lost on opening night.
Melissa, who was named the Big Ten’s Sixth Player of the Year, hit her first three 3-pointers and should be in the starting lineup when the season starts.
Samantha, whose, teamed trailed by 12 with five minutes left, hit a couple of threes and almost brought her team back.

A look at returning Hawkeye basketball players

By Don Lund
Sports Writer
This is the second part of talking Iowa basketball with assistant coach Sherman Dillard.
Last week, I talked about Iowa winning 25 games, which is tied for the second most wins ever.
They have never gone to the finals of the NIT until last year and they played in 38 games which is the most games played in one year.
The Hawks also won 18 home games, including two in the NIT, which is the most home wins in a season.
I talked about Devyn Marble and Aaron White. Devyn led the team in scoring, assists, steals and most 3-pointers.

Saying so long to Hawkeye seniors

The Hawkeye women went to the NCAA basketball tournament for the sixth straight year, won 21 games and got a victory in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Iowa is the only Big Ten team to have appeared in the last six NCAA Tournaments.
I talked to assistant coach Jenni Fitzgerald last week about the season and the new recruits.
Coach Fitz has been on Lisa Bluder’s staff for 13 years and has helped the Hawkeyes to 12 postseason appearances, including 10 NCAA berths.
