Co-champions?

The Hawkeye wrestlers had four in the finals for the Big Ten championship in Columbus, Ohio.
They lost all four, but had enough points in the wrestle-backs to tie Ohio State for the championship.
It just doesn’t feel right, but Iowa had its chances.
What if the Hawks get just ONE point out of 157 pounds or 165?
All 10 of the wrestlers were ranked in the top eight coming into the meet.
Thomas Gilman (125), Brandon Sorenson (149) and Sammy Brooks (184) were top-seeded.

Are the Hawks off the bubble?

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men’s basketball team had two games last week.
I thought they needed to win both of them to get into the NCAA Tournament... they did, but a couple of more wins would give them a little cushion.
The Hawks hosted Illinois and won 68-60 on Thursday.
Saturday night, Iowa traveled to Penn State and came out the winner in overtime, 81-77.
The game against the Fighting Illini was a grind-it-out, physical game.
On a night when only one Hawk was in double figures, the rest of the team helped out in other ways.

No place like home for Hawkeye women

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women had two home games last week.
They started with a tough 78-74 win over Wisconsin last Thursday and finished with a 96-72 blowout against Minnesota.
The victory over Wisconsin was a struggle.
Iowa would take the lead and, thanks to 3-point shooting, the Badgers would come back. Wisconsin was 8-12 from 3-point land in the second half, which kept the game close.
Thank goodness for Samantha Logic and solid free throw shooting down the stretch.
Samantha finished with 20 points, 10 boards and nine assists while playing 39 minutes.

Bumps in the road

Hawk Talk

The Iowa women had two road games last week and lost both of them.
The Hawkeyes opened up last week playing at Minnesota, the Hawks’ third game in six days and Iowa lost, 93-80.
Then Iowa traveled to Ohio State on Saturday and lost, 100-82.
That’s the first time the Hawkeye women lost back-to-back games all year.
The Gophers came out smoking, hitting six of their first eight shots, including four 3-pointers.
Minnesota came into the game shooting 33 percent from 3-point range, but shot 66.7 percent (8-12) against Iowa.

Two straight blowouts

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men had two games last week.
They smoked Rutgers 81-47 on Thursday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, then traveled to Nebraska on Sunday and double-smoked the Cornhuskers, 74-46.
I’m not sure the Rutgers game was a “must-win,” but if Iowa is going to make the NCAA tournament, it was pretty important.
Isn’t it fun to watch the Hawkeyes play the way we think they should be playing every game?
I know the Scarlet Knights lost nine in a row before playing Iowa, but Northwestern had lost 10 straight before beating the Hawks.

Top-ranked wrestlers fall

The number-one rated Hawkeye wrestlers got knocked off Sunday, 18-12, in the finals of the National Duals.
Iowa opened up the Duals last Saturday at Carver with a 44-3 domination over Chattanooga and a 24-8 win over fifth-ranked Cornell.
The Hawkeyes had five pins in the win over Chattanooga (Cory Clark, Michael Kelly, Mike Evans, Sammy Brooks and Bobby Telford).
Iowa also had a tech fall by Brandon Sorensen at 149 pounds.
Thomas Gilman was the only loss, 3-1 in overtime.

Big Ten Championship

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye wrestlers won their seventh regular season Big Ten championship in the last eight years by knocking off Michigan, 22-9, last Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
On Sunday, they knocked off Virginia, 30-6, in the opening round of the National Duals.
Iowa won seven of 10 matches against the Wolverines, but it still didn’t seem like a good win.
There were too many close matches, too many slow starts and when Bobby Telford, ranked second at 285, lost in overtime on a reversal, there was not a lot of joy in Mudville.

UI women have not hand

The Hawkeye women also had two games last week.
They beat Nebraska 69-61 at Lincoln on Thursday and then smoked Indiana, 81-64, at Carver.
To say the Cornhuskers had the Hawkeyes’ number since Nebraska got into the Big Ten in 2011 would be an understatement.
The Cornhuskers won three games against Iowa last season, including a 72-65 win in the Big Ten Championship game.
That was then, this is now.
Iowa knocked off Nebraska, 78-72, in overtime at Carver on Jan. 26 this season.
Last Sunday, the Hawks came out slow and trailed 37-28 at half.

Hawkeye men don’t

The Hawkeye men played two games last week, losing at home to Minnesota, 64-59, and then losing again at Northwestern on Sunday in overtime, 66-61.
The Hawks came into the Minnesota game with a two-game winning streak, having crushed Michigan at Ann Arbor, 72-54, and then beating a pretty good Maryland team at home, 71-55.
Iowa shot over 60 percent in each of those wins, did a great job of moving the ball and in the Michigan win, had all five starters in double figures.
Those two games were probably the best basketball the Hawks have played so far this year.

Hawkeyes sign 21

I knew this was going to happen by I’m still amazed by it.
Do you realize that my hometown of Moville, (population of less than 1,400 and 15 miles east of Sioux City) signed as many football recruits as Des Moines (population more than 206,000)?
When Landon and Levi Paulsen came on board as Iowa Hawkeyes last week, it was a great day for the Woodbury Central Wildcats and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Moville, the home of the Wildcats, consolidated with Climbing Hill (population of around 130) in 1962.

Badgers sweep Hawks

Wisconsin is rated fifth in the nation for a reason.
They have good shooters, they make their free throws, they don’t turn the ball over and they play defense.
Last Saturday at Carver, the Badgers took down the Hawkeyes for the second time this season, 74-63.
There were a few sidebars coming into the game.
Would Aaron White play and be effective with his injured shoulder?
How about Gabe Olaseni? He was seen in a boot on campus last week.
What about Dan Dakich? He was the color commentator for ESPN who called Adam Woodbury gutless and cowardly the last time Iowa played Wisconsin.

Women on a roll

The Iowa women had two home games last week.
They opened with a 76-70 win over Michigan.
The Michigan win saw the Hawkeyes lead from start to finish.
The Hawks led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but the Wolverines kept hanging around. Bethany Doolittle was 3-4 from the free throw line in the last 41 seconds to give Iowa the win.
Great passing for the Hawkeyes as all five starters had at least two assists and they shot 57 percent from the floor.
