Don Lund

Can they break out?

Hawk Talk

This is the final preview of Iowa football. This week I’ll look at the linebackers, defensive backs and special teams.

Who will start at QB?

Hawk Talk

The is the second part of a three-part series on the Hawkeye football team.
Last week I talked about the offensive line, tight ends, wide receivers and fullbacks. This week I’ll talk about quarterbacks, running backs and the defensive line. I’ll also pick who I think will be the starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes.

No matter who starts at quarterback, Iowa must have a strong running game to set up the play-action pass.
For the first time since Shonn Greene played in 2009, the Hawks should have some talent and depth at running back.

Hawkeye offense

Hawk Talk

It’s time to break down the Hawkeye football team.
This week I’ll talk about the offense, including the line, tight ends, wide receivers and fullbacks.
The more I look at the offensive line, the more I like it.
First of all, you have seven players that started at least one game last year.
There is no better experience than starting a game. It’s different than going in for a few plays because when you start, you get all the reps with the first team during the week.
Also Eric Simmons (6-2, 295) and Ryan Ward (6-5, 290) red shirted so they will add depth.

Are you ready for some Hawkeye football?

Hawk Talk

Iowa Hawkeye football media day is Thursday, Aug. 8, so it’s time to talk some football.
For the next couple of weeks I’ll be looking at the schedule plus breaking down the offense, defense and special teams.
The schedule has seven homes games and three of the first four at Kinnick Stadium.
The home opener against Northern Illinois could be good look at how the season will go.
The Hawkeyes have won the last 12 opening games. The last time they lost the first game was 2000, Kirk Ferentz’s second year.

Lone senior Theairra Taylor prepares to lead

Hawk Talk

Theairra Taylor started all 34 games last season for the Hawkeye basketball team as a junior.
She also played in all 31 games in her sophomore season.
Not bad for a player who had missed 53 games in her first two years because of knee surgeries.
The Hawkeyes started strong, knocking off four top-20 teams last season early in the year. They lost five straight Big Ten games in a row but still finished with 21 wins and hosted the first round of the NCAA tournament.
They beat Miami in the first game, then lost to Notre Dame, who went to the Final Four, in the second game.

Hawkeyes Devyn and Zach

hawk talk

This is the second part of a two-part story on Devyn Marble and Zach McCabe.
These are the last two recruits that Todd Lickliter signed before he was fired in the spring of 2010. Last week I talked about Devyn and how he came in as a role player and now is a full time starter.
In Devyn and Zach’s first yearm the Hawks were 11-20, 4-14 in the Big Ten. Devyn played in all 31 games, with six starts and averaged 5.7 points per game. Zach played in 31 games, had six starts and averaged 5.8 points.
