Near sweep for wrestlers

The Hawkeye wrestlers won their first nine matches against the Northwestern Wildcats, but heavyweight Bobby Telford couldn’t finish the deal.
Iowa still dominated, 38-3.
Mike McMullan, who was ranked No. 4, took down Bobby in double-overtime in Iowa’s only loss.
Mike and Bobby have wrestled seven times with Mike winning four.
Mike was ranked No. 1 when Bobby beat him at the Midlands, 4-2, Dec. 30 at Evanston, Ill.
The dynamic duo... Thomas Gilman (125) and Cory Clark (133) started Iowa out with a technical fall and a pin.

Bad day at work for the Hawks

The Hawkeye men played two road games last week.
They got smoked 85-52 at Wisconsin and lost at Purdue, 67-63.
Did you ever have one of those days that everything seems to go wrong?
You wake up late because your alarm clock doesn’t go off, you pack your lunch and get in the car and your gas gauge is on empty.
Then you get to work and your computer is down. You break for lunch and remember you left your lunch by the front door so you wouldn’t forget it.

Wrestlers roll over Illinois

Hawk Talk

Last Friday at Carver, the Hawkeyes wrestlers took out the Fighting Illini, 25-12.
Illinois only won three matches but they were a decision, a technical fall and a major decision and Tom Brands, the Hawkeye head coach, wasn’t happy.
Illinois led 12-10 when the roof was blown off Carver.
Alex Meyer (174) was in for Mike Evans, who was nicked up.
Alex, who was wrestling sixth-ranked Zac Brunson, trailed 5-3 with 1:32 left in the third period.

Iowa men get two

The Hawkeye men’s basketball team took a road trip to Minnesota, winning a close one 77-75 last Tuesday.
Iowa hosted Ohio State last Saturday and led from start to finish, 76-67.
Stop me if you have heard this one before.
Iowa takes a 38-27 halftime lead against Minnesota by playing good defense, making shots (61 percent from the floor) and winning the rebound battle, 18-14.
The second half, the Gophers shoot 62 percent from the floor, 54.5 percent from 3-point range, outscore the Hawks 48-39 and win the rebounds 16-15... but Iowa won the game!

Hawkeye women sweep

The Iowa women played two games last week, beating Northwestern 83-70 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Wednesday, then going to Michigan State on Sunday and winning a nail-biter, 52-50.
Since Melissa Dixon has been in a groove on her 3-point shooting, more teams haven’t been playing zone against the Hawkeyes.
When they are in a player-to-player defense, Iowa spreads the floor which opens up the lanes. You have some players that can drive and score. Bethany Doolittle and Ally Disterhoft do such a good job because of their quickness.

Women bounce back against Boilermakers

Hawk Talk

The Iowa women also had two games last week.
They lost at Illinois last Thursday, 73-61, and then beat Purdue 73-59 at Carver Sunday.
The Hawkeye loss at Illinois was kind of like the men’s loss to Michigan State on the same night.
The first half had Iowa leading 35-30 with 10 assists, five steals and only seven turnovers.
The Hawks shot 41.2 percent from the floor and 40 percent from 3-point range.
The second half, Iowa had 15 turnovers, shot 34.5 percent from the floor and 35.3 percent from the 3-point line.
It didn’t help that three starters combined for 13 turnovers.

Hawk wrestlers take down Cowboys

It’s not too often that the Iowa wrestlers go down to Stillwater, Okla., and dominate Oklahoma State, 30-7.
You have to go back to 1995 for Iowa to have scored that many points.
The Hawkeyes dominated in five weights including a come-from-behind pin by Josh Dziewa at 141 pounds.
Josh trailed 5-1 going into the third period before getting the fall.
Thomas Gilman (125) got Iowa started with a 15-5 major decision over 11th-ranked Eddie Klimara.
Cory Clark (133) picked up a 10-5 win before Josh stunned the home crowd with a pin.

Hawks split at home

The Hawkeye men played two games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last week, beating Nebraska 70-59 Monday and losing 73-61 to Michigan State on Thursday.
The Nebraska game was not pretty, as Iowa led most of the way, shot 39 percent from the floor, 25 percent from 3-point range and were outscored 34-22 inside the paint.
Iowa’s free throw shooting (31-38) was the difference.
Aaron White (12-15) and Gabe Olaseni (12-13) were hot from the charity stripe.
Aaron has made the most free throws in school history as he has 524 for his career, passing Roy Marble who made 516.

Really?

Hawk Talk

This is the way the seniors are ending their careers?
I was a little worried about Iowa’s bowl game last Friday against Tennessee.
The Volunteers are young and haven’t been to a bowl since 2010, so I thought they would come out with a lot of energy.
I also thought the Hawkeyes would at least show up...
When you can’t make tackles, can’t move the ball and trail 35-7 at half, you know it’s not your day.
The game ended 45-28 but it wasn’t that close.
I’m going to give you two plays that sum up Iowa’s season in a nutshell.

Women pick up road win against Stringer

The Iowa women also picked up a big road win at Rutgers, coached by Vivian Stringer, and bringing back a 79-72 victory.
When you look at some of statistics, you wonder how the Hawkeyes got their second Big Ten win of the season.
You start with rebounds– Iowa lost that battle 41-34 with Rutgers grabbing 18 offensive rebounds.
The Scarlet Knights also shot 16-18 from the free throw line while the Hawks were 10-22.
How did the Hawkeyes come through?
You start with the best 3-point shooter in Iowa history.

Road win

By Don Lund
Sports Writer
Anytime you can open the season with a road win, it’s a good start all around.
The Hawkeye men’s basketball team went to Columbus last week and held off the Ohio State Buckeyes, 71-65.
The Hawks played solid defense, won the rebound battle 37-29, made shots down the stretch and got good play from the bench.
This is the second game in a row that Peter Jok started.
Peter came out strong, hitting a couple of free throws, a 3-pointer and a jump shot to help the Hawkeyes build a 19-10 lead with six minutes gone in the game.

Bounce back win

Hawk Talk

After two straight losses to instate rivals, the Hawkeye men’s basketball team needed a win to get some confidence back.
They got that last week with an 80-70 win over the North Florida Ospreys.
North Florida came into the game with a 7-5 record with one of their wins coming at Purdue, 73-70.
They also lost to UNI, 66-49, and Northwestern, 69-67.
