Hawk Talk

Spring football

This is the final part of spring football for the Iowa Hawkeyes. This week I’ll talk about the scrimmage last Saturday and special teams.
The scrimmage had a new look at Kinnick with the offense and defense going heads up and keeping score.
It was a perfect day for football, not too hot, a nice breeze and enough clouds not to get sunburned.
I liked the new format that had a point system that allowed for some good competition.
They played 15-minute quarters in the first half, 12-minute quarters in the second half.
I’ll start with the offense, which won the battle, 61-37.

Defense needs to get better

This week, I’ll look at the defense.

Hawkeye spring football

PART TWO

This is the second part of a look at Hawkeye football and spring practice.
Last week I talked about the depth and experience of the offensive line.
This week I’ll look at the tight ends, wide receivers and a new position called Y-back.
The Y-back will be a combination of tight end and blocking fullback.
The tight end position should be as good and deep as the offensive line.
Zach Derby is the only graduate, but when you talk about senior C.J. Fiedorowicz (6-7, 265) as your starting tight end, you are in pretty good shape.

No NIT champ

Iowa basketball season came to an end last week at Madison Square Garden with a 74-54 loss to the Baylor Bears.
The Hawks picked a bad time to go cold in their shooting as they hit only 26 percent for the game and missed at least 12 point-blank baskets.
That’s their lowest shooting percentage this season.
I’ve been doing an informal pool asking my friends if they would rather have Iowa make a deep run in the NIT or lose in the first or second round of the NCAA tournament.
Most of them agree with me that it’s fun to see the Hawks win and keep playing, like they did in New York.

Hawkeye men win two more

This is a busy time of year for Hawkeye fans as there was men’s and women’s basketball at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last weekend and the NCAA wrestling championship in Des Moines.
The Hawkeye men got to host two games last week at Carver for the opening round of the NIT and they won them both.
Last Wednesday they knocked off Indiana State, 68-52, and on Friday, Iowa beat Stony Brook, 75-63.

Spartans knock out Hawkeyes, 59-56

Michigan State put together a second-half rally, knocking Iowa out of the Big Ten Tournament and into the NIT.
One of the problems I have about the NCAA tournament is when you have a team with a losing record in the field.
That means a team, like the Liberty Flames (15-20), who won their conference tournament, knocked out a team like Iowa (21-12), who finished sixth in the toughest conference in America.
I don’t see why the committee can’t say you at least have to have a winning record like the NIT does.
