Should Coralville funnel funds to private business?

Since the mid-2000s, the City of Coralville has been engaged in significant economic development projects that have been both hailed as visionary and necessary for the community’s growth, and criticized as unfair and irresponsible to taxpayers. In more recent years, the city has fallen under greater scrutiny for its TIF practices and continued participation in providing financial incentives to private enterprise. This is the third in a three-part series examining the city’s current fiscal status, its economic decision making and the concerns of area citizens who question both.

JECC passes emergency communications test

Center functions well during June’s severe weather

JOHNSON COUNTY– County residents should be glad to hear that at least one return on their investment equals better safety for everyone.
North Liberty Mayor Tom Salm is a member of the policy board for the Joint Emergency Communications Center (JECC), the central facility that dispatches emergency resources and personnel from fire departments, law enforcement agencies and medical responders countywide.
Salm told the North Liberty City Council earlier this month that June’s severe weather incidents put the JECC facility and its personnel to the test, and all passed with flying colors.

How healthy is Coralville’s debt?

CORALVILLE– According to the State Treasurer of Iowa’s Outstanding Obligations report of 2012, Coralville is carrying a total of $278.9 million in debt.
It is the state’s third-highest city debt load behind Des Moines ($438 million) and Cedar Rapids ($430 million).
However, that number takes on a more troubling quality when put up against each city’s population, said Kevin O’Brien, area business owner and member of Citizens For Responsible Growth And Taxation (CFRG&T).

North Liberty puts out call for bids on $400K water tower paint job

NORTH LIBERTY– Some North Liberty residents may soon notice a tangible shroud of mystery hanging over one northeast part of the city.
Literally.
The city’s water tower on 240th Street is scheduled to be repainted this year, and the process requires a large curtain to be draped over the entire structure in order to contain any debris it might create.
