Solon High School students collect shoes for those in need

SOLON– When it comes to community service, a handful of Solon High School students have created some mighty big shoes to fill.
When sophomores Kaytee Berstler, Sydney Gerdts, Kaitlin Hatcher, Taylor Nearad, Lake Reyhons and Jake Singkofer found themselves with time on their hands during the school day, they set about looking for a cause to support. Principal’s secretary Kim Blankenheim suggested they research an organization she had heard about called Soles4Souls, a charity that recycles shoes to be donated to those in need in the United States and more than 125 other countries.

Investment policy still causing conflict

TIFFIN– Tiffin City Council member Mike Ryan has not changed his mind about the city’s investment policy.
He failed to change others’ minds last week as well.
Ryan asked for the city’s investment policy to be placed back on the council’s March 27 agenda because, he said, “I didn’t agree with the decision, I’m going to bring it up every council meeting until the sun doesn’t shine … I may never get my way, but as a council member, I can put it on the agenda every time and the pubic is going to hear about it.”

Projects underway and on display

City vows to keep residents updated on upcoming road delays

NORTH LIBERTY– About 75 North Liberty residents came out Wednesday night to learn more about what’s in store for the city’s streets and parks.
City officials held an open house last Wednesday, March 27, to allow the public to view plans for future road projects and two city parks.
“The purpose of the meeting was to get the public familiar with our upcoming projects,” said North Liberty Mayor Tom Salm. “Jones Boulevard, Highway 965 and west side park improvements.”

Soon, a new chapter in library’s history

Ryan Humphrey, Ashlyn Wheery, Katelyn Humphrey and Haydon Wheery enjoy a “crafternoon” at the North Liberty Community Library on March 12. Behind them, the particle board partition separates the existing library from the new 11,000 square foot expansion that is currently under construction. The new section of the library is expected to be open to the public in May. (photo by Lori Lindner)

West side park to see first phase of improvements

Public invited to give input at March 27 open house

NORTH LIBERTY– Plans for a new public park in North Liberty are now in full swing.
At its March 12 meeting, the North Liberty City Council approved plans, specifications, form of contract and cost estimates for improvements to a 40-acre green space acquired by the city in 2009. The space near the intersection of Jones Boulevard and St. Andrews Drive was used as farm ground until last year, and is now ready for its first phase of development.

Etheredge edges Dahms for supervisor’s seat

JOHNSON COUNTY– It wasn’t a landslide victory, but it might be considered a landmark one.
On Tuesday, March 5, Republican candidate John Etheredge won a seat on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, the first Republican to serve on that body in 51 years, since the term of Republican Oren Alt ended in 1962.
