Sommers witness to American tragedy in Boston

Local woman shares marathon experience

NORTH LIBERTY– A runner for 13 years, none of the races previously undertaken by Iowa City pharmacist Stacy Sommers ended quite like the one on April 15, the most prestigious of America’s footraces, the Boston Marathon.
Moreover, this was Sommer’s very first Boston Marathon.

Petition pushes for supervisors to be elected by district

JOHNSON COUNTY– Petitioners pushing for a new way to elect county supervisors are getting closer to their goal.
According to Debra Thornton, chair of the Johnson County Republicans, members of the Committee for Fair Representation– the group that organized the petition drive– are “well on their way” to gathering the 7,619 valid signatures required to call for a public vote on the matter.

Boston strong

North Liberty woman returns safely from site of American tragedy

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty chiropractor and runner Dr. Sheri Giese, DC, has already made up her mind.
In 2014, Giese will once again be among the nearly 30,000 people who don bib numbers and beat feet along 26.2 miles of Massachusetts roads that are part of the oldest annual marathon in the world. It’s a traditional event with an international luster that was blackened this year in a matter of seconds by two terrorist-planted bombs that killed three people and left more than 200 injured.
“People have asked me if I’ll run next year,” she said. “Yeah, I’m running next year.”

Jail or no jail: voters decide May 7

Retooled proposal goes back in front of county voters

JOHNSON COUNTY–Certain Johnson County officials hope $3.3 million in reductions to the design for a proposed justice center will be enough to swing public sentiment in their favor.
In the November 2012 general election, a $46.8 million bond issue for the project was defeated, receiving only 56 percent voter approval when 60 percent was required. Proponents went back to the drawing board almost immediately to revise the plan for a combined jail and improved Johnson County courthouse, and get it back in front of the public as soon as they thought feasible.

Rustic Iron Bar & Grill

The best, essential tastes of Iowa found at

NORTH LIBERTY– The Rustic Iron Bar & Grill is off the beaten path, in every good way.
Its location is set back off Highway 965 on the south edge of North Liberty, which allows for plenty of parking and easy access from the town’s major thoroughfare. The updated décor was personally crafted by the building’s new owners, giving it a unique atmosphere on the inside. The menu, created entirely by co-owner and chef Jeremy Rullman, is fresh and distinctive and designed to give patrons a lot of input on how dishes are prepared to their own individual tastes.

Solon dancers join Bullwinkle on Broadway

Solon dance team members perform in the Macy’s parade

SOLON– Last November, three young Solon women had a chance to taste a slice of life in the Big Apple.
And it was sweet.
It wasn’t just the average school trip or family vacation, either. These ladies were invited to participate in one of the nation’s time-honored holiday traditions, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Solon High School students collect shoes for those in need

SOLON– When it comes to community service, a handful of Solon High School students have created some mighty big shoes to fill.
When sophomores Kaytee Berstler, Sydney Gerdts, Kaitlin Hatcher, Taylor Nearad, Lake Reyhons and Jake Singkofer found themselves with time on their hands during the school day, they set about looking for a cause to support. Principal’s secretary Kim Blankenheim suggested they research an organization she had heard about called Soles4Souls, a charity that recycles shoes to be donated to those in need in the United States and more than 125 other countries.

Investment policy still causing conflict

TIFFIN– Tiffin City Council member Mike Ryan has not changed his mind about the city’s investment policy.
He failed to change others’ minds last week as well.
Ryan asked for the city’s investment policy to be placed back on the council’s March 27 agenda because, he said, “I didn’t agree with the decision, I’m going to bring it up every council meeting until the sun doesn’t shine … I may never get my way, but as a council member, I can put it on the agenda every time and the pubic is going to hear about it.”

Projects underway and on display

City vows to keep residents updated on upcoming road delays

NORTH LIBERTY– About 75 North Liberty residents came out Wednesday night to learn more about what’s in store for the city’s streets and parks.
City officials held an open house last Wednesday, March 27, to allow the public to view plans for future road projects and two city parks.
“The purpose of the meeting was to get the public familiar with our upcoming projects,” said North Liberty Mayor Tom Salm. “Jones Boulevard, Highway 965 and west side park improvements.”
