Another controversial rezoning for Newport Road

Supervisors approve change to residential for Jeff and Judy Stevens

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors just can’t alleviate the rough ride that comes with Newport Road.

First step in countywide ID program

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County supervisors don’t always get applause, hoots and whistles when they make a decision. But then, their meetings don’t typically draw audiences of 100 or more people at once.

Tiffin council to decide how to fund CIP projects

To bond or not to bond ...isn’t really a question

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin has over $7 million in improvements projects on its to-do list.
The next priority is figuring out how to pay for them.
Jeff Heil, of Northland Securities, came before the Tiffin City Council at its April 8 meeting to explain the city’s options for incurring the debt necessary to fund its committed capital projects, including completing the Ireland Avenue extension, upgrading Roberts Ferry Road, finishing Phase 5 of its portion of the Clear Creek Trail system and constructing municipal water and sewer utilities to Clear Creek Amana’s new elementary school.

Hatching nest eggs

Hills Bank celebrates agriculture month

NORTH LIBERTY– March was agriculture month at Hills Bank and Trust Company, and what better way to celebrate than inviting a few chicks over?
It was baby chick day at North Liberty’s Forevergreen Road location on Saturday, March 28. Doors opened to the public so children and families could visit the baby chicks hatched at the bank earlier this month.

Sutliff Road upgrade planned before RAGBRAI rolls

Fuel tax increase provides extra funding for county road project

JOHNSON COUNTY– An increase in the fuel tax might cause anger at the pumps, but some drivers in Johnson County will realize its benefits yet this year.

Compromise results in cuts to street projects

MPO distributes trails, transportation funding to Tiffin, North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– It wasn’t exactly an April Fool’s joke when the leaders of two of the county’s three largest communities were hit with a punch line last Wednesday that resulted in a significant financial cut.
Staff from the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) delivered generally good news to government representatives at their Urbanized Area Policy Board (UAPB) meeting April 1.

Room for disagreement

Is there such a thing as being too civil?

Is there such a thing as being too civil?
I argue there can be too much civility when it comes to boards of government officials elected to represent a wide range of constituents.
Once, someone I highly respected told me we should value those who ask hard questions and don’t accept easy answers. (Shamefully, I can’t remember who offered this maxim, but I repeat it frequently, yet fail to attribute it. Please, if this sage advice belongs to you, come forward and let me recognize and thank you.)

Finding balance

Local kayak fishing enthusiasts cast around for new club members

NORTH LIBERTY– If you think you couldn’t reel in a 25-pound catfish in a kayak, Scott Shrader would prove you wrong.
Shrader, of North Liberty, has always been a fisherman. As a child, he went bass fishing with his father and competed in fishing tournaments as he got older.
He bought a kayak because he also loved paddling around on the water, and a kayak offered something a little different.
“Kayaking a relaxing sport, and you don’t have to deal with the gas and maintenance and expense of having a motor boat,” said Shrader.

Sports pavilion, trail upgrade projects to begin this summer

NORTH LIBERTY– A couple of major construction projects to occur this summer will bring enhanced enjoyment of two of North Liberty’s main recreational features.
The North Liberty City Council on March 24 gave Parks Director Guy Goldsmith a nod to proceed with the design process for a new sports pavilion at Penn Meadows Park. The city is partnering with the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYSB) league for the construction of a building and adjoining picnic shelter, with NLYBS committing $250,000 of the project’s estimated $500,000 cost.

Playing on a strong team

Whitmore opens NL office as Edward Jones investment advisor

NORTH LIBERTY– Travis Whitmore feels he has learned a lot about life through playing sports and growing up in America’s heartland: a strong work ethic, perseverance, teamwork and respect for others.
Today, he is applying those life lessons to teach others about financial management.
Whitmore recently opened a new office as an Edward Jones financial advisor. Located at 550 Pond View Dr., Ste. C., Whitmore is ready to meet customers at their convenience.

They could have danced all night

Solon Dynamite dance team hosts Dance Spectacular 2015

SOLON– Solon Dynamite is the bomb.
The high school dance team of six hosted the group’s annual Dance Spectacular on Friday, Feb. 13, in the high school gym. As is tradition, Solon invited other dance troupes from the area to share the spotlight, including a team from Solon Middle School, preschool through sixth grade dancers who lit up the night with a glow stick routine, and individual members who presented solo numbers in a variety of dance styles. Dance teams from Williamsburg, Grinnell and Dance Arts Iowa also performed routines for the packed house.

Landowner continues to battle North Liberty

Landowner continues to battle North Liberty

Earlier this month, about 40 trees were cut down on the property of Gary Weinman, a rural resident who is suing the City of North Liberty to halt condemnation of a portion of his prairie land for a public sewer project. The city prevailed in a court hearing to stay compensation proceedings, and was ordered to pay Weinman $80,000 for the easement. The city is appealing that award, and more recently communicated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about a permit process questioned by Weinman’s legal counsel. (photo by Tom Tau)
