Council says no to 16k for courthouse

Hearing set to consider borrowing for $727,000 fire station addition

SOLON– The Solon City Council did not support language in a ballot initiative that would dedicate 10 percent of potential Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) revenue toward payment of a bond for the county courthouse annex.
Council members did schedule a public hearing on securing Tax Increment Financing (TIF) for an addition to the fire station.
The city has a number of major infrastructure projects still on its to-do list, including the North Trunk sewer line, a water tower, and other municipal projects, and is currently carrying substantial debt to retire.

School board talks attendance areas, magnet schools

IOWA CITY– Chris Lynch presided over his first Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Board of Directors meeting as president on Tuesday, July 8.
His duties included administering the oath of office to the board secretary and treasurer, moderating community comments, and leading the board through a packed agenda.

ICCSD approves names for new schools

NL to welcome Liberty High School, Grant Elementary

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Board of Education approved the names of three elementary schools and a new high school at their July 8 business meeting.
The names were nominated by members of the public, and selected by a committee of 23 district residents that included students, parents, administrators, employees of the district, and other parties. The selection committee was appointed by Superintendent Steve Murley and former School Board President Sally Hoelscher. The vote for approval was unanimous with Director Patti Fields absent.

IC board hears update on NL’s future schools

IOWA CITY– Duane Van Hemert, physical plant director for the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD), updated the operations committee on progress of the facilities capital improvement plan at a June 23 meeting.
Included were reports on Van Allen Elementary, Penn Elementary and the proposed high school in North Liberty.
There have been challenges; however, improvements and construction are expected to proceed on schedule, Van Hemert indicated.

IC school board president resigns

Murley’s contract ok’d, most administrators receive pay raise

IOWA CITY–The community came together on Tuesday, June 24, near the intersection of Sycamore Street and Daniel Place to turn symbolic shovels of dirt for the first new school in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) in more than 20 years. That would have been news enough.
However, it was part of a busy day that ended with the resignation of Sally Hoelscher as school board president.
Hoelscher’s unexpected resignation toward midnight capped the news.

Temporary or permanent? Council mulls Windmill sewer

SOLON– The developer is ready to proceed, but the city is not.
An additional phase for Windmill Estates is in a holding pattern as the city decides how best to address sewer needs for the subdivision.
The City Council discussed the constraints of a substantial debt repayment schedule last week when considering how to pay for a new wastewater lift station, trunk sewer line and water tower.
It is a challenge for any government to pay for the wants and needs of services and capital improvements, and the City of Solon proved to be no exception.
