Award-winning children’s fiction author visits NL library

NORTH LIBERTY– When asked where she gets ideas for her award-winning books, children’s author Kate DiCamillo offered but a simple answer.
“Do you know what eavesdropping is?”
An estimated 575 people packed the gymnasium at the North Liberty Community Center on Saturday, Nov. 17, for a highly-anticipated visit from the acclaimed author. DiCamillo read passages from her books and took questions from eager audience members, both young and the young at heart, followed by a book signing and photos.

North Liberty Business & BBQ

Celebrating commerce growth at Mosley’s

NORTH LIBERTY– “They say if you feed them, they will come.”
A jovial North Liberty Mayor Terry Donahue remarked on a nearly packed house during Business & BBQ on Thursday, Nov. 15, which continued the city’s annual fall celebration of commerce and growth.
Fittingly, the City of North Liberty and Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce reserved Mosley’s Barbecue and Provisions on Zeller Street for the event, giving locals a taste of the brand-new restaurant just four days ahead of its official opening to the public.

Murder and mayhem take the stage at Liberty High

Liberty Lightning Theatre brings classic board game Clue to life

NORTH LIBERTY – Parker Brothers introduced a murder mystery board game named “Clue” to the United States in the late 1940s. Players chose a character, a weapon, and drew cards to deduce the murderer, the weapon used, and which room in a mansion the murder occurred in to win the game.
In 1985, the game was turned into a movie with a screenplay penned by Jonathan Lynn. Ten years later a musical version was created, which was revised and returned to Broadway this year. Lynn modified his theatrical (non-musical) script for the stage in 2016.

The Legends of Tomorrow Community Youth Group kicked off this year as a means for youth to seek opportunities for personal growth and to contribute to the community. “The main focus is good decision making,” cited Cecilia Roudabush, general music teacher at North Central and a coordinator of the program. “Smart choices for a positive future.”

In it for the bees

Boy Scout advocates residential beekeeping in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Dominick Shover’s got a buzz for bees, and he thinks you should, too.
A member of Boy Scout Troop 216 in North Liberty, Shover has become an advocate for honeybees and beekeeping over the last two years. He says bees don’t deserve the bad rap they often receive– not only that, but we should embrace them for sustaining our very existence.
“If the bees go, man would have less than four years to live,” Shover cited.

Harvey puts his paw prints on the CCA stage

The Creek’s thespians bring a classic to life

NORTH LIBERTY– Elwood P. Dowd is a happy man. Day in and day out, he meets new friends and generally lives without a care. His best friend, though, is a 6-3 white rabbit named Harvey, who nobody else can see. The trials and tribulations of his loving sister, Myrtle Mae Simmons, and her efforts to have Dowd committed to a sanitarium are the basis for “Harvey,” a two-act comedy-drama the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School Drama Department presented Thursday, Nov. 8, through Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Performing Arts Center in Tiffin.

Eventually the structures would have to be torn down.
