Lady Spartans take second`

Dallas Center-Grimes holds Solon to one hit in 4A title game

FORT DODGE– One hit was not enough to win a championship.
The Solon Lady Spartans fell to No. 1-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes, 5-0, in the 4A softball championship Friday.
Solon’s powerful offense could muster only one hit against Dallas Center-Grimes pitcher Paige Lowary, and ended up toting the runner-up trophy off the Harlan Rogers Park diamond in Fort Dodge for the second time in three years.
It was the first shutout of the season for Solon.

Paws to read and laugh out loud

TIFFIN– Where can you find sassy puppets, magic tricks, jumping snakes and a trained flea circus?
Children fround them all at Springmier Library in Tiffin on July 9, when puppeteer and performer Maggie Erdmann presented Paws to Read, a fun presentation that uses puppets, magic and audience participation to encourage kids to find their favorite books in their local libraries. Springmier Library’s 2014 Summer Reading Program wrapped up July 30 with a final celebration and prizes for those who completed their reading logs. (photos by Lori Lindner)

District champs!

Wagner’s run gives CCA 3-2 edge over Vinton-Shellsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers earned another achievement for the 2014 baseball season Monday, July 21, by winning the Class 3A District 9 championship with a 3-2 win over the Vikings of Vinton-Shellsburg in Williamsburg.
The Clippers went up on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning as Tanner Bandy smacked a line drive over the left field fence for a solo home run, giving CCA a 1-0 lead. The Vikings tied the game in the fourth and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth.

Solon women unload 21 hits on CCA

FORT DODGE– Solon head coach Jim White really wanted that first run.
In the top of the first inning, the Lady Spartans came up with three clutch two-out singles to score first against Clear Creek Amana (CCA) in a 4A quarterfinal at the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge Monday.
A year ago, Solon had been ranked No. 3 and came into the state tournament with only two losses, but the unranked Washington Demons jumped out to a 3-0 lead and the Lady Spartans didn’t recover.
This time, against a familiar foe in the CCA Clippers, it was another story.

In a pickle

North Liberty Pickleball mixer grows each year

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s a unique group of people who are delighted to find themselves in a pickle.
Local Pickleball aficionados hosted their fifth annual North Liberty Pickleball summer gathering at the Penn Meadows Park tennis courts, a sort of invitational tournament that is more fun than competition, and includes a potluck picnic and social time. Games are played round robin-style so players mix with others from all over the state.

Clippers advance in district baseball

WILLIAMSBURG– Conventional wisdom has it that it is tough to beat a team three times in one season, let alone in one week. But the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers baseball team dashed that notion as well as South Tama’s hopes of advancing toward the state championship Friday, July 18, in a Class 3A Substate 5 District 9 semifinal baseball game in Williamsburg. The Clippers trounced the Trojans 10-3 to go on to face Vinton-Shellsburg in a district final Monday, July 21.
