Together again

Perfect weather for SHS graduation

SOLON– The weather cooperated, and Solon High School’s (SHS) Class of 2020 had its day in the sun.
The Solon Community School District conducted its formal graduation ceremony Sunday, July 19, at Spartan Stadium.
Inclement weather would have forced the ceremony into the high school’s auditorium, limiting the number of family members and friends able to attend.

Reconciling the sins of the past

Johnson County Supervisors discuss the origins of Johnson County

IOWA CITY– In his play “Romeo and Juliet,” William Shakespeare wrote, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.”
In Johnson County, Iowa, however, some are hoping the county will still smell as sweet under a new namesake.
Recent social unrest fueled by protests against racism has led to statues and monuments, mostly related to the Civil War, being damaged, destroyed or taken down. Several national food products are seeing changes to their branding, eliminating trademark personas such as Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima due to connections with slavery.

New restaurant Table opens in North Liberty

Table is open in North Liberty and features rustic, farmhouse-inspired cuisine, premium cocktails and an all-Iowa beer list.

NORTH LIBERTY– A new restaurant has opened on North Liberty’s west side.
The Table restaurant offers many classics, as well as vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, while frequently sourcing from local producers. The ownership is made up of seven local entrepreneurs.
Many safety measures were implemented to ensure the safety of guests, staff, and community members, according to a press release.
Table opened July 7 at 575 Cameron Way in North Liberty, the former location of Beerburger, and patrons may visit the website at www.tableiowa.com.

Class of 2020 to have its day

July 19 ceremony to be held at Spartan Stadium Inclement weather could curtail attendance

SOLON– Parents, family members and friends will be able to spread out at Spartan Stadium to safely celebrate the graduating Solon High School (SHS) Class of 2020 Sunday, July 19.
But if the weather doesn’t cooperate, things change.
According to SHS Principal Zach Wigle, if the ceremony is forced inside, the district will utilize the high school auditorium, and that will limit the number of guests for each graduate.

Show will go on for many 4-H, FFA families

Johnson County Fair prepares for competitions with no crowds

IOWA CITY– For most Johnson County 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) families, there will be a 2020 fair.
When the Johnson County Fair Board announced in mid-May it was canceling 2020 grounds and grandstand entertainment, it also promised to find a way to spotlight the accomplishments of 4-H and FFA members.
That opportunity is coming up July 26 through July 29.

A little longer, but also a little shorter

Celebrating Independence Day in the COVID-19 era in Oxford

OXFORD– The annual Fourth of July Parade was both a little longer, and also a little shorter this year. The parade, held on Saturday, July 4, followed a different route, and also had noticeably fewer entries than in some previous years.
In June, a city council member, and a member of the Oxford First Responders, created the new and longer parade route in the hopes of spreading out the crowds for social distancing; a concern during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

Keeping the kiddos fed

CCA provides over 53,000 meals during shutdown, and theyre not done yet

TIFFIN When the COVID-19 crisis closed schools, districts across the state scrambled to provide distance learning opportunities and electronic devices to make it possible. They also had to come up with a way to provide a more basic need: the lunches and breakfasts many of their students depended on.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District quickly mobilized on both fronts, distributing Chromebook tablets and acquiring and distributing Internet hot spots. The district also formulated a first-of-its-kind (for CCA) plan to keep the meals coming.

More development on East Main

Erusha presents mixed-use concept to council Spring 2021 construction planned

SOLON– The landscape of Solon’s Main Street is set to change again.
At a June 17 meeting, Solon City Council members reviewed a plan by Neil Erusha, of rural Solon, to redevelop three-quarters of a city block on the northeast corner of Highway 1 and Main Street into a mix of commercial and residential use.
Erusha proposed two new two-story buildings facing Main Street and the rehabilitation of an existing building on the north end of the property.
The concept depicted accesses on Highway 1, Cedar Street and Main Street, and that’s where Mayor Steve Stange had an issue.

Local student qualifies to compete at world’s largest rodeo.

DENVER– Taylor Moore, junior at Solon High School, earned a position on the Iowa State National High School Rodeo team and will travel with fellow teammates to Guthrie, Okla., on July 17-23 to compete at the 72nd annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in the pole bending and cutting horse competitions.

Blues and BBQ cooks up a socially distant alternative

By the North Liberty Blues and BBQ Committee

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s been two months since North Liberty Blues and BBQ organizers announced a decision to cancel the 2020 in-person edition of North Liberty Blues and BBQ presented by Veridian Credit Union due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, but fans of the festival can still have a taste of Blues and BBQ at home.

Under construction

5th Street intersection closed through mid-July for signal project Council updated on current projects

SOLON– It will be mid-July before the intersection of Highway 1 and 5th Street opens back up.
Eastbound through traffic on 5th Street has been diverted around construction of a traffic signal, and paving is scheduled for July 13-14, according to City Engineer Dave Schechinger.
During a June 17 city council meeting, Schechinger said crews are currently working on sewer and sub-drain, with subgrade scheduled for the following week. The work is expected to increase the intersection’s radius, widening the southeast corner by about 10 feet.

Splash pad back in sight

City prepares to absorb rising costs Hoping for summer 2021 opening

SOLON– The City of Solon would like to get its splash pad into the ground, but there are still costs up in the air.
It’s been a long time on the drawing board for the city’s first water park, but city officials hope to pull the project together and start construction in earnest yet this year.
At a special meeting June 10, city council members authorized a $64,518.45 down payment to Vortex Aquatic Structures International for the splash pad’s structures and recirculation equipment.
The total cost of the materials will be $215,061.50, including delivery.
