Fun bests the blahs in first annual Beat the Bitter Winter Games

NORTH LIBERTY– Although Midwesterners, Iowans are apparently not very good at winter.
That was the beginning of a discussion that ended with a plan for action to create “Beat the Bitter Winter Games and Good Cheer,” North Liberty’s newest community celebration.
The inaugural event took place Saturday, Feb. 6, with activities to encourage area residents to come outside, get moving, spark some new friendships and warm up to winter as best they could.

Enquiring minds want to know

Lakeview Elementary students dive into science projects

SOLON– Civilized humanity has always liked to put things on display.
The Great Expositions and World’s Fairs prominently displayed the latest in future thinking and scientific wonder.
That inquisitive spirit lived on, in part, at the Lakeview Elementary Science Fair, held Saturday, Jan. 30, in Lakeview’s large gym.
Inside the event, sponsored by Lakeview’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), 78 students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade manned nearly 60 exhibits.

First reading of ordinance to lower minimum wage for minors

TIFFIN– They wondered why they were discussing it again.
Tiffin City Council members Jim Bartels and Mike Ryan both said Tiffin’s lack of action against Johnson County’s new minimum wage ordinance should have settled the issue in November.
However, the item was back on the council’s Feb. 2 agenda, after councilor Al Havens proposed a tiered wage to allow employers to pay people under age 18 the state minimum of $7.25 per hour.

Blazers and Blue Raiders fall to Solon

SOLON– The Lady Spartans varsity team welcomed the Anamosa Blue Raiders to their home court on Tuesday, Jan. 26, and did just what they had to do. Solon defeated the Blue Raiders, 40-34, and sent them north with a loss.
The varsity Lady Spartans were up by six points in just over a minute of play through the combined efforts of Dakota Doyle, Bryce Hinkel and Hannah Bluder. Anamosa’s coach quickly called a time-out to have an animated conversation with the Raiders’ varsity squad that reverberated in the gymnasium.

City quickly fills seat vacated by Grover

SOLON– The “No Vacancy” sign has been turned back on.
At a Jan. 6 Solon City Council meeting, Mayor Steve Stange read a letter of resignation from council member Casey Grover.
By the Jan. 20 meeting, newly-appointed member Lynn Morris was sworn into office.
Morris, 52, has been a resident of Solon since 2003, and recently served a term on the city’s Board of Adjustment.
During the same Jan. 6 meeting in which Grover’s resignation was announced, council members approved a motion to appoint a replacement.

Clinton visits North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Two weekends, two former U.S. Secretaries of State.
That’s the recent dignitary count for North Liberty.
Many in the community welcomed former Secretary Madeleine Albright on Sunday, Jan. 17, and former New York Senator and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Sunday, Jan. 24. Both women were here to stump for Clinton as she campaigns to become the Democratic nominee for the 2016 presidential election.
A crowd of about 700 people gathered in the gym at Garner Elementary School to hear Clinton’s speech.

Flushable wipes: bad reputation is no bum rap

NL resident, public works want people to know what’s behind clogged sewer line

NORTH LIBERTY– The claims that personal hygiene cloths are “flushable” and “septic and sewer safe” may be a load of crap.
Flushable wipes were the apparent cause of a sewer backup that occurred in two homes in Arlington Ridge subdivision in North Liberty two weeks ago.

Their father, Brad Raasch, calls it “the right thing to do.”
For six days in August, Raasch and his sons cycled over 230 miles– the distance equivalent to traveling from Solon to Chicago– to raise funds to purchase supplies for children on the autism spectrum at Lakeview Elementary.
Raasch set up a funding page on the Crowdsource site YouCaring, listing a target goal of $500.
“To be honest, I wasn’t sure if we’d make that $500,” Raasch said.
