Davenport Assumption sinks CCA, 41-7

TIFFIN– The Knights of Davenport Assumption locked themselves into a three-way battle for the top of Class 3A District 4, and either a guaranteed football playoff berth or possible wild card spot Friday, Oct. 13, by defeating the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers 41-7 in Tiffin. The Clippers, with four losses, are out of the playoff picture for 2017 and were playing their final home game of the year ahead of ending the season Friday, October 20 in DeWitt.
The Knights began spoiling CCA’s Senior Night with 4:47 remaining in the first quarter by scoring on a short run for a 7-0 lead.

Trojans clinch postseason berth

IC West rolls over Linn-Mar, 42-7

IOWA CITY– With one week remaining in the regular season, the Iowa City West High Trojans have clinched a spot in the Class 4A football playoffs with an 8-0 record after rolling over the Linn-Mar Lions 42-7 Friday, Oct. 13, in Iowa City.
The Trojans remained the only unbeaten squad in Class 4A District 8 with Cedar Rapids Prairie (3-1, 7-1) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (3-1, 6-2) left to battle it out for the runner-up spot in the district (and a guaranteed playoff berth) or a possible wild card selection.

CCA boys post highest conference meet finish in school history

VINTON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys cross country squad earned some bragging rights Thursday, Oct. 12, as they posted a third-place finish in the WaMaC Conference Championships meet at Vinton-Shellsburg High School. Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the varsity boys title with 56 points followed by Marion (64) and the Clippers in third close behind with 67.
“You’ll see that the CCAXC boys finished third in one of the tightest races we’ve seen!” CCA Coach Ben Robison proudly noted. “This was our highest WaMaC finish since joining the conference.”

WAPELLO– Liberty High’s varsity cross country teams reached new milestones Thursday, Oct. 12, as the boys earned their first meet win, the girls nearly took the runner-up spot and a pair of Bolts recorded their first victories in the Mediapolis Cross Country Spectacular held at the Indian Hills Country Club in Wapello.

WATERLOO– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy swept the Waterloo West High Wahawks on the volleyball court Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Waterloo. Iowa City’s sophomores won, 3-0 (21-8, 21-10, 21-17), the junior varsity won, 2-0 (25-13, 25-18), and the varsity won, 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-8).
Colby Greene led the varsity Women of Troy with 13 kills, while Cailyn Morgan made 12 and Maddie Laffey had 10. Rylee Fay produced 20 assists, Morgan and Fay made three ace serves apiece, and Claire Overton had three solo blocks.

Lightning compete in Dubuque V-ball invitational

DUBUQUE– The Liberty Lightning took the runner-up spot in the Silver Bracket of Dubuque Hempstead’s invitational volleyball tournament Saturday, Sept. 23.
The Lightning lost 2-0 to Cedar Rapids Xavier (21-15, 21-11) and 2-1 to Clinton (21-19, 16-21, 13-15) but defeated Davenport West 2-0 (21-16, 21-19) and Davenport Central 2-0 (24-22, 21-10) in pool play.
Liberty topped City High 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) in the semifinal match of the Silver Bracket before falling 2-0 to Clinton (21-11, 21-12) in the final.

Stone Soup Supper and Silent Auction Oct. 29 benefits NL pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry hosts their 9th Annual Stone Soup Supper and Silent Auction on Sunday, Oct. 29, from 4:30-7 p.m., at the South Slope Community Room, 980 North Front Street. The event is sponsored by Hills Bank and Trust Company, University of Iowa Community Credit Union, Great Western Bank, Cost Cutters and South Slope Cooperative Communications.

Fall leaf collection started Oct. 9

NORTH LIBERTY– City crews start collecting leaves curbside beginning the week of Oct. 9. This free service will run through the week of Nov. 13.
To have your leaves collected, rake them within 2 feet of the street by 7 a.m. on each Monday. Crews will collect them by Friday. Don’t bag your leaves or mix them with sticks, branches or other yard waste, or any other materials.
To speed collection, please avoid placing piles near street signs or utility poles, and avoid parking in front of leaf piles.

965 Phase 2 construction dragged out by delays

Contractor and city engineer seek resolution over liquidated damages

NORTH LIBERTY– Road construction can be cumbersome for travelers and city officials alike. Add to that hundreds of thousands of dollars in liquidated damages and you’ve got, to put it one way, a major bump in the road.
In a prolonged struggle, the City of North Liberty is trying to find a resolution with the contractor of the virtually completed Highway 965 Phase 2 project, after conflict resulted from delays dating back to 2014.

Scouts seeking new food drive record

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Boy Scouts hope to set a new record this year. Last year, Scouting for Food collected 6,324 pounds of food for the North Liberty Community Pantry. The Scouts hope to see that number grow in 2017.
