NL to welcome Liberty High School, Grant Elementary

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Board of Education approved the names of three elementary schools and a new high school at their July 8 business meeting.
The names were nominated by members of the public, and selected by a committee of 23 district residents that included students, parents, administrators, employees of the district, and other parties. The selection committee was appointed by Superintendent Steve Murley and former School Board President Sally Hoelscher. The vote for approval was unanimous with Director Patti Fields absent.

Davenport West 7, Women of Troy 1

West’s tourney hopes dashed in the dirt

IOWA CITY– The varsity softball season ended Monday, July 14, for the West High Trojans as they fell 7-1 in a Class 5A regional semifinal at home against the Falcons of Davenport West.
For coach Justin Lutjen, his first season with the Women of Troy ended far too soon.
“This isn’t how we wanted to end it,” he said with tears in his eyes. “We had high expectations and those will never change, and they won’t change next year.”

West wins two-day battle against City, dumps Solon

West High Trojans reign in Iowa City

IOWA CITY– It’s the doubleheader played over two days with bragging rights on the line: the annual meeting between City High and West High on the baseball diamond. Last year, the Little Hawks and Trojans split the contest with each team taking a win.
This year, it was all West.
The Trojans opened the series at home on Monday, July 7. Coach Charlie Stumpff was recognized and honored for over 600 career wins prior to the game, and the West boys gave him one more by taking down the Little Hawks, 6-2.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana Clippers varsity baseball team dipped to a 16-17 record with a pair of losses to Marion and a double-dip of misery to Maquoketa while picking up a win over Highland.

West High sophomores win 12-2 over City High

IOWA CITY– West’s sophomore squad had no problem putting away the City High Little Hawks with a 12-2 win at Mercer Park July 8. The City sophomores scored two runs in the first inning but West rallied back with a 10-run onslaught in the third and finished the game with two more in the fifth.

Hanson’s Grove hosts last show

SOLON– July 4 was Hanson’s Grove’s final hoorah.
According to organizer Sandy Hanson, the 2014 edition of the annual antique show held on her property north of Solon was the last.
The annual antique show couldn’t have ended on a more perfect note. The weather was mild, the attendance was enthusiastic and sales were humming.
After drenching rains on July 1, downed trees and debris, wet grounds and road closures all seemingly going to impact the show, Hanson said crews cleaned up the storm damage, the grounds dried out and the fourth dawned bright and clear.

Cool blues

NORTH LIBERTY– Things will be heating up on the west side of the city this weekend; and not just the weather.
North Liberty Blues & BBQ, presented by South Slope, gets underway at noon on Saturday, July 12, at Centennial Park, near the intersection of Jones Boulevard and St. Andrews Drive in North Liberty. While the free festival is now in its eighth year, holding plenty of traditional favorites, there are some new things to look forward to as well.

Clean-up is major undertaking for North Liberty’s indoor pool

NORTH LIBERTY– It was just a piece of glass the size and texture of a dried pea.
Even so, it caused an estimated $5,000 worth of problems for the City of North Liberty.
A young patron at the North Liberty Aquatic Center’s indoor pool stepped on the fragment in the 5-foot depth area, though the swimmer did not get cut. Once pool staff identified the fragment, the incident set in motion the procedure for evacuating, closing and inspecting the pool.

CCA boundary committee charts its course

TIFFIN– The task is great, but the time is short for Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) enrollment and boundary study committee.
The members now ponder how to realign the district’s elementary school attendance areas ahead of a new elementary currently under construction in Tiffin. The committee, comprised of 16 members, held it’s first meeting Thursday, June 26, at the high school in Tiffin.
