IC West swims past CR Kennedy, 128-58

CORALVILLE– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy swim team dunked the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars, 128-58, Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Coralville Recreation Center.
Varsity winners for West High included Melanie Housenga (200-yard freestyle), Lilly Ernst (200-yard Individual Medley (IM), 100-yard butterfly), Izabel Houselog (50-yard freestyle), Aurora Roghair (100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke), Alleyna Thomas (500-yard freestyle) and Jenny Geng (100-yard breaststroke).

Trojans tie with Waukee at Heartland XC Classic

Greiner finishes ninth in varsity race

AMES– Des Moines Roosevelt High School hosted its 2017 Heartland Classic Cross Country Invitational Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Iowa State University’s course in Ames with 32 teams from across Iowa and five other states participating.
Iowa City West High’s Trojans tied with Waukee in team points for 15th with 396 while Edina, Minn., won the varsity race with a team score of 84 points. Cedar Rapids Prairie was seventh (237) while City High placed 13th in team points with 388.
Kolby Greiner led West High with a ninth-place finish in 16:15.6.

Clear Creek girls fall to Independence

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers became another casualty of the Independence Mustangs on Tuesday, Sept. 12, as Indee swept the Clippers, 3-0, in Tiffin. The Mustangs improved to 13-1 and were the eighth-ranked team in Class 4A according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s (IGHSAU) Sept. 7 rankings. The Clippers fell to 6-9 in the wake of the Mustangs’ visit.
Indee took the first set, 25-10, and won the second set, 25-14.

Women of Troy finish in third at Heartland Classic

AMES– She did it again.
Iowa City West High’s Bailey Nock pulled away from the field early in the Heartland Classic cross country invitational (hosted by Des Moines Roosevelt High School and held Saturday, Sept. 16 at Iowa State University’s cross country course in Ames) and won by 13 seconds over runner-up Olivia Soverign of St. Thomas Aquinas (Missouri) in 18:51.9 Nock, a senior, was over 20 seconds ahead of Linn-Mar’s Micah Poellet, a freshman, who finished third in 19:15.6.

Clipper boys win Oskaloosa XC Invite

Barker finishes second to lead CCA

OSKALOOSA– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys cross country team picked up another team title Tuesday, Sept. 12, winning Oskaloosa’s invitational meet. The Clippers put up 30 team points, topping host Oskaloosa, Williamsburg, Fairfield and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, among other squads, in the 11-team field.
CCA’s Brandon Barker was the individual runner-up behind winner Ben Lamparek, of Williamsburg. Barker finished in second place in 18:09.60, while Lamparek won in 17:58.4. CCA’s Nick O’Connor was third in 18:20.3.

Bolts clip the Falcons, 61-0

IOWA CITY– Liberty High’s sophomore football team improved to 1-1 with a 61-0 blowout Tuesday, Sept. 5, over the West Burlington Falcons at Iowa City West High.
Jack Ankenbauer put the Bolts on the scoreboard with 6:38 remaining in the first quarter, when he scored a touchdown. Kaleb Williams added a successful 2-point conversion to give Liberty an 8-0 lead. Williams reached the end zone two minutes later and scored on his second 2-point play for a 16-0 lead. Dawson Zimmerman took a punt return all the way to the house to make it 22-0.

Creek Boys win Tipton XC invite

TIPTON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys cross country squad won the Tipton Invitational Tuesday, Sept. 5, in Tipton’s City Park. The Clippers topped the 18-team field with 77 team points and were led by Nick O’Connor’s seventh-place finish in 17:10. Brandon Barker was three seconds behind O’Connor and took eighth place.
Center Point-Urbana was second in points with 91 while the host Tigers were third with 102.

West High’s Nock leaves the field in the dust at Noelridge Park in C.R.

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West and Liberty High’s girls’ cross country squads joined a plethora of teams Thursday, Sept. 7, at Noelridge Park in Cedar Rapids for the Cedar Rapids Invitational, hosted by Cedar Rapids Washington.
The varsity West High Women of Troy ended up second in team points behind team champion Dubuque Wahlert, but West’s Bailey Nock blew the field away by winning the race in 18:18.57 (a new course record), a full 13 seconds ahead of Linn-Mar’s Micah Poellet.

Creek girls place 10th at Tipton XC Invite

TIPTON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity girls cross country squad finished 10th in team points Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Tipton’s Cross Country Invitational, held in Tipton’s City Park. Davenport Assumption won the meet with 67 team points while Solon was third with 113 and the host Tigerettes were seventh with 170. Center Point-Urbana (CP-U) was ninth with 200 while the Clippers were 10th with 276 team points.
Kaylie Barker led CCA with a ninth-place finish in 20:51.

Creek girls sink Bobcats

VAN HORNE– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team improved to 5-5 Tuesday, Sept. 5, with a 3-2 win over Benton Community in Van Horne.
The Clippers dropped the first set, 16-25, but pulled out a 29-27 win in the second set before dropping the third set, 22-25. CCA rallied for a 25-21 win in the fourth and held on for a 15-10 win in the fifth and final set.

Trojans escape Tigers in OT

IC West beats Cedar Falls, 31-30, with 2-point play

CEDAR FALLS– Iowa City West High’s Trojans improved to 3-0 on the varsity football season as they slipped past the Cedar Falls Tigers, 32-30, in overtime Friday, Sept. 8, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
The Tigers controlled the first half and held a 17-0 lead at halftime before the Trojans regrouped.
Owen McAreavy put the Trojans on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a 2-yard leap into the end zone. Lucas Karwal’s extra point kick made it 17-7.

Warriors sweep Lightning

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity volleyball squad fell 3-0 to the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors at home Thursday, Sept. 7.
Wash swept the Lightning, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-22. The loss dropped Liberty to a 2-5 record.
LeeAnn Potter led the Lightning with a dozen kills. Hailey Hested made 18 assists and 18 digs, Olivia Slattery made four ace serves and one solo block.
