Getting kids to think about their futures

OXFORD— Kids ask a lot of questions. Two questions they commonly ask their parents and teachers are, “Why do I have to learn this?” and, “When will I ever use this?”
The Workplace Learning Connection (WLC) at Kirkwood Community College seeks to bridge the gap between school and work to bring relevance to subjects and answer those questions.
Laurie Worden, associate director of the WLC, briefed the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District’s Board of Education on programs offered to CCA students.

Davenport West upsets Iowa City West, 5-3, in regional softball final

IOWA CITY– If not for a first inning grand slam, Iowa City West High’s 5-3 loss in a Class 5A regional final softball game to Davenport West may well have been a 3-1 win.
The sixth-ranked Women of Troy faced the 11th-ranked Falcons Tuesday, July 12, in Iowa City on the final stop for either team before heading to Fort Dodge and the 2016 State Softball Tournament.

Murray, Navara nab First Team spots with 91 combined hits

OXFORD– The WaMaC athletic conference released the 2016 All-Conference Softball picks for the East and West Divisions on Wednesday, July 13, with seven Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity players earning spots on the list.
Benton Community’s Eric Stenberg was named the West Division’s Coach of the Year as the Bobcats posted a 37-2 record overall and 18-0 conference showing in the regular season to lead the division.

Adara Opiola named MVC Valley Div. Athlete of the Year

IOWA CITY– Nine West High varsity softball players earned Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) All-Division honors on the 2016 list released Wednesday, July 13.
Senior Adara Opiola earned the Division’s Athlete of the Year honor, along with Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Tianna Drahn. Kennedy’s Dan Gratz and his staff picked up Coach of the Year honors and the Cougars were named the division Team Champion.

Annual music fest leaves smaller footprint despite record number of attendees

NORTH LIBERTY– They descended on Centennial Park by the thousands, but dry ground and eco-friendly initiatives made it difficult for them to leave a mark.
An estimated 15,000 people attended North Liberty Blues & BBQ presented by South Slope Cooperative Communications last Saturday, where they enjoyed 13 food vendors, five bands and a host of kid-centered activities.
“It’s all been glowing reviews,” said North Liberty Communications Director Nick Bergus. “We’re really proud of the feedback we’ve gotten.”
Plus, he said, the weather was perfect.

Public hearings set for proposed alcohol ban at Lake Macbride and Pleasant Creek beaches

DES MOINES – Two public hearings are scheduled to accept public comment on a proposed rule to ban alcohol on the beaches at Lake Macbride State Park and Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area.

LifePointe fourth annual CommUNITY Day July 23 in Tiffin

TIFFIN– LifePointe Christian Faith Center, of Tiffin, will hold its fourth annual CommUNITY Day event Saturday, July 23, from 12-4 p.m. at the Tiffin soccer fields. North Liberty man pleads not guilty of murder-for-hire accusations

State records show intertwined business relationship between defendant and intended victim

NORTH LIBERTY– Justin DeWitt, the North Liberty man accused of hiring a hit man to murder a business associate and three others, has pleaded not guilty.
According to online Iowa court documents, 36-year-old DeWitt, of 110 Whitman Ave., filed a written arraignment and plea of not guilty last Wednesday. He will stand trial Oct. 4 on four accounts of attempted murder and four accounts of solicitation to commit murder. Michael K. Lahammer, a Cedar Rapids-based attorney, will represent him.

NL council goes local with solar

100-plus kWh system to save thousands per year

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty plans to soak up a little more sunshine before the year’s end, hopefully turning those rays into usable energy.
City council members approved the recommendation by city staff to draft a solar installation agreement with Moxie Solar, of North Liberty, at the June 28 council meeting. The decision comes after the evaluation of proposals received in April and will result in three solar arrays installed– roof-mounted systems at the fire station and parks shop and a ground-mounted system at the streets facility.

IHA dog wash fundraiser July 16 at Leash On Life

NORTH LIBERTY– Local pet owners hoping to avoid the mess, hassle and fur ball-clogged bathtub drains resulting from Rover’s summer bath are in luck. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, the Iowa Humane Alliance (IHA) will host a dog wash, bake sale and microchip fundraiser at Leash On Life, located at 650 Pacha Parkway.
Dogs will receive a $25 wash and nail trim while their owners savor fresh baked treats and sales on select merchandise at Leash On Life. IHA clinic staff will microchip dogs at the event for $25.

Iowa River kayaking, canoeing trip July 25 in Iowa City

NORTH LIBERTY– Join the North Liberty Recreation Department and Johnson County Conservation for a kayaking and canoeing trip down the Iowa River on Saturday, July 25, starting at 8:30 a.m. Participants will meet at Sturgis Ferry landing in Iowa City, embark on a three-hour float and finish at Hills Landing, roughly nine miles down river. The trip is open to all ages and skill levels. At time of registration, specify if you would like a single kayak, a tandem canoe or if you will provide your own watercraft. Rentals are limited, so sign up early.

Bluebird house building Aug. 9 at Lake Macbride

SOLON– The public is invited to join Lake Macbride seasonal staff in building bluebird houses. The event on Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 5 until 8 p.m. at Lake Macbride Park’s Main Lodge, is open to people of all ages.
