NL reschedules rained-out fireworks for Sept. 12

NORTH LIBERTY– The Eastern Iowa Airport Up-in-the-Sky Fireworks, originally scheduled for July 12 during Blues & BBQ, will be launched Friday, Sept. 12, in Penn Meadows Park.
The North Liberty Community Library will celebrate the first anniversary of its grand reopening with the fireworks display at about 9:30 p.m. It will follow the library’s free Redbox-presented outdoor showing of “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” on a 16-foot screen. Both are free.
The evening’s events will take place in Penn Meadows Park, with a rain date for the film and fireworks the following day, Saturday, Sept. 13.

Highway 965’s first stage of construction nears completion

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, Horsfield Construction, the Highway 965 project contractor, expects to begin paving next week, with the reopening of the stage one road closure as early as the week of Sept. 22.

Free child health and safety fair to be held Sept. 20

NORTH LIBERTY– The public is invited to First United Methodist Church of North Liberty to enjoy the annual free child health and safety fair Saturday, Sept. 20. First United Methodist Church is located at 85 N. Jones Blvd., about a block south of the corner of Penn Street and North Jones Boulevard.

Cedar Rapids Horsemen’s Club to celebrate 70 years Oct. 12

Heartland Community Church block party to be held Sept. 21

NORTH LIBERTY– The fourth Annual Heartland Block Party will be held Sunday, Sept. 21, from 3 until 5 p.m.
The church, located at 70 S. Kansas Ave. will host a free, single-elimination bags tournament for teams of two with a great prize for the winner. The party this year will also bring back old favorites including bounce houses, popcorn and ice cream as well as hot dogs. A new offering will be a free raffle drawing for prizes donated by area merchants.

CCA 40, Mid-Prairie 6

TIFFIN– After the Clippers of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) suffered a heartbreaking season-opening overtime loss on the road in Center Point, they retooled and rearmed for a week two visit from Mid-Prairie (Wellman) in a Class 3A-Class 2A non-district match-up.
The result was a 40-6 shelling of the Golden Hawks, improving the Clippers’ record to 1-1.

West wins 3-0 over Jefferson

Balanced attack thwarts J-Hawks

IOWA CITY– The Women of Troy opened the 2014 MVC volleyball season ranked fifth in the state and with a 2-1 record Tuesday, Sept. 2, at home against the J-Hawks of Cedar Rapids Jefferson. West had knocked off North Scott and No. 6 Pleasant Valley before falling to Bettendorf in MVC/MAC play, while the J-Hawks had yet to take to the court.

Clippers in cross country action at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Clear Creek Amana’s cross country squads opened the 2014 season at the Williamsburg Raider Invitational Tuesday, Sept. 2.
The varsity boys brought home a fifth-place overall finish led by Eric Douglass, who finished eighth in 18:36. The varsity girls were seventh overall and led by Chloe Keith and her 21st-place finish in 19:04.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity volleyball team improved to a 4-2 record with four wins in tournament action in Grinnell on Saturday, Aug. 30. The Clippers handled host Grinnell 2-0 along with Centerville (2-0), Norwalk (2-0) and Iowa Valley (2-0). West Liberty upended the Creek Girls, however, 0-2.
On Thursday, Sept. 4, the Clippers made it a 5-2 record with a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Benton Community Bobcats.
CCA squeaked out a 25-22 win in the first game before dominating the rest of the match 25-14 and 25-13.

Second annual Color Fund Run/5k in Oxford to be Sept. 27

OXFORD– The second annual Clear Creek Elementary Color Fun Run/5k will be held in Oxford on Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. at Lions Park, 400 W. Wilson St. Last year the group raised more than $10,000 for the playground. This year, proceeds will be donated toward new technology. The public is invited to join. LOST ballot language set

JOHNSON COUNTY– All the votes are in… except for those that really count.
All Johnson County voters will now determine the fate of a proposed Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) this Nov. 4.
The Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 on Wednesday, Aug. 27, to set the election date and to limit the LOST to 10 years if it passes.

CCA public input meeting centers on question of division

TIFFIN — Two scenarios were laid out before attendees of a public input meeting Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the Clear Creek High School in Tiffin.
Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district’s enrollment and boundary study committee hosted the event, seeking guidance from the district’s patrons on how best to realign the elementary school attendance areas ahead of the new elementary school in Tiffin. The unnamed school is currently under construction and is scheduled to open fall of 2015.
