West High to be well represented at state

Boys’ 4x800, Gardarsson No.1

DES MOINES– The West High track and field teams will send athletes to 39 events at the 2014 state co-ed track meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines from Thursday, May 22, through Saturday, May 24.
The boys 4x800-meter relay team with Wynton Karanja, Noah Brase, Ian McGillicuddy, and Kaleb Greiner (with alternates Daniel Gardarsson and Andrew Gilbaugh) is the No. 1 seed in the event with a qualifying time of 8:03.78. Gardarsson is also the top-seeded athlete in the boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:24.68.

North Bend Elementary hosts first Powder Fun Run

NORTH LIBERTY– After a bitter winter, students and their families were motivated to get outside and kick up their heels.
Over 450 participants joined in North Bend Elementary’s first annual 5K and 1 Mile Powder Fun Run fundraiser held Saturday, April 12, in North Liberty.
“This was a phenomenal turnout for our first event,” said co-organizer Angie Rummel. “We felt the event was very successful. Even though it was a bit windy, the temps warmed up for us and the rain– and snow– stayed away. After having such a long and cold winter, it was great to be outside and get active.”

Fine arts strike CCA’s board’s fancy

Choir, speech take center stage

OXFORD– After all of the performers and their families and friends left, the remainder of the evening was comparatively bland.
Third, fourth and fifth grade choir members at Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) performed for the Clear Creek Amana school board during a regular meeting Wednesday, April 16, in the CCE library. Also on the venue were four CCA high school students who competed in the All-State Speech Contest at University of Northern Iowa on March 31.

Walking School Bus programs get local kids walking in May

IOWA CITY– Van Allen Elementary School will be piloting a walking school bus program for 12 days in May with the hopes to encourage more kids to walk to school with new and existing friends in their neighborhood.

Heavy boat traffic expected for Memorial Day holiday

DES MOINES– Iowa’s peak boating season begins May 24, and with it comes a reminder for boat owners to make sure they have a current boat registration sticker on the vessel and that Iowa has a .08 alcohol limit for boat operators.
“Going boating with friends is a fun way to spend a day and just like car drivers, boat operators are responsible for their passengers’ safety and for other boaters on the water,” said Susan Stocker, boating law administrator and education coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Optimists to hold plant sale May 17

NORTH LIBERTY– The Optimist Club of North Liberty will host a plant sale on Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 412 N. McKenzie Ln. in North Liberty.
Perennials, lilacs, hostas, and much more.
All proceeds go to children with cancer.
