Creek Girls tie for ninth at Early Bird Relays

ANAMOSA– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls track and field team tied with Independence for ninth place in team points at Anamosa’s Early Bird Relays Tuesday, April 10. Cedar Rapids Prairie won the meet with 155.50 points, while WaMaC teams Marion and Center Point-Urbana (CPU) were seventh and eighth respectively (53.00, 45.00) The Clippers and Mustangs put up 43 team points, while the host Blue Raiders were sixth with 54.

Women of Troy second at Johnston Invitational

Malloy-Salgado, Nock, Haight, Severt win for IC

JOHNSTON– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy track and field team took the runner-up spot in Johnston’s Craig Oldham Invitational Tuesday, April 10. Waukee won the meet with 191 team points, while West High put up 95 for the number-two spot.
Kiara Malloy-Salgado, Bailey Nock, Chandler Haight and Katie Severt posted wins for West in the 800-meter run, 3,000-meter run, discus and long jump, respectively. The 4x800-meter relay team also won.
Deniz Ince and Haight took second place in the 3,000-meter run and shot put, as well.

Trojans win Hempstead’s Mustangs Relays

West, McAreavy, Gannon, Green win for West High

DUBUQUE– Iowa City West High’s Trojans were denied their home track and field meet two consecutive Saturdays by cold, wind and rain, but managed to pick up a meet win Thursday, April 12, at Dalzell Field in Dubuque at the Dubuque Hempstead Men’s Mustangs Relays.
West High’s varsity team took the meet with 130 points, The Rams of Dubuque Senior took the runner-up spot with 123.50 and the host Mustangs were seventh with 67.

Creek Boys bit by the Sabers

Central DeWitt takes down CCA

DEWITT– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys soccer team suffered its second loss of the season on Tuesday, April 10, to the Sabers of Central Clinton, on the road in DeWitt. The Sabers defeated the Clippers, 3-0.
Junior Blake Malli, the Creek Boys’ keeper, made nine saves through 80 minutes of play.
The Clippers travel to Center Point-Urbana on Thursday, April 19, for a 4:30 p.m. match and visit West Liberty on Monday, April 23, with a 5 p.m. start. The Creek Boys visit Marion on Tuesday, April 24, at 4:30 p.m.

Boats and Bolts run Denny White Relays

CCA and Liberty score wins

MOUNT PLEASANT– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers (“Boats”) and the Lightning of Liberty High (“Bolts”) were able to take advantage of decent weather Thursday, April 12 as both teams ran in Mount Pleasant High School’s Denny White Relays. The Bolts and Boats were among the Class A teams with the Creek Boys finishing second in points.

NORTH LIBERTY– Join Dance for a Difference Sunday, April 22 from 12-4 p.m. in the small auxiliary gym at Liberty High School.
The event will feature a DJ, a photo booth, food and four speakers. Individuals will run treadmills, accumulating donations for every mile ran, and a silent auction will be held with contributions from local businesses.
Proceeds will be distributed among the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, the Fight with Flash Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House.

Liberty High’s first musical plays tribute to Dr. Seuss’ works

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High School’s first musical is in the books. The show, “Seussical the Musical,” was the product of a series of books written by Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
Stephen Flaherty (music) and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics) took Seuss’ works, such as “Horton Hears a Who,” “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” “Horton Hatches the Egg” and others, and crafted them into a musical that opened off Broadway at the Richard Rogers Theatre in New York City in 2000.

P&Z gives input on county comprehensive plan

IOWA CITY– They’ve had their say. The Johnson County Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) reviewed the final draft of a proposed comprehensive plan for the county during a Thursday, April 5, work session. The five-member commission requested several changes, which were dutifully noted by Planning, Development and Sustainability (PDS) staff. P&Z gave the plan one final review, with its changes in place, during a regular meeting on Monday, April 9, and approved the plan on a 5-0 vote, sending it to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors for adoption.

Tiffin fire annual pancake breakfast April 15

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders host their annual pancake breakfast Sunday, April 15, from 6 a.m. to noon at the fire station, 221 Main St.
Chief Brian Detert said the department expects to serve around 1,200 people. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, whole hog sausage and cinnamon rolls. There will also be jam from Clear Creek Orchard for sale. No admission fee is required, but a free will donation is accepted.

Ranshaw Way widening to begin, April 16

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, on Monday, April 16, work will begin to widen Ranshaw Way (Highway 965) to five lanes between Zeller and Cherry streets. The first stage of widening work will occur on the east side of the street. Two lanes of traffic will remain open through the project; however, the speed limit and lane width will be reduced to allow crews to begin utility work and install storm sewers.

Volunteers sought for Kites for Kids, April 21

NORTH LIBERTY– The 2018 Kites for Kids Festival will be held Saturday, April 21 from noon to 2 p.m. at North Central Junior High. A partnership between Community Partnerships for Protecting Children, Johnson County and the City of North Liberty, the event supports Child Abuse Prevention Awareness with free kites, face painting, treats and beverages.
